Chapter 1
“Leah, wait.” A male voice rang across the street, breathless as he pushed his way along the crowded New York City sidewalk, miraculously not disturbing any of the pedestrians that were in his way.
“Leave me alone!” she yelled back her brown hair blown around her face as a bus blew by her. She only rested for a second before continuing to run a head of the boy by a good 10 feet which for her was an achievement.  Although she had a tougher time trying to get past the crowd that was funneling out of the subway then he did the boy quickly caught up to her and grabbed her arm.  “Let me go!” She yelled as the native New Yorkers just passed by pretending not to notice the argument between the two teenagers.
“Not until you listen,” he said refusing to let go of her no matter how hard she pulled to escape and still they refused to notice the pair. “What is the matter with you?”
“Like you don’t know,” Leah said pulling away from the blonde boy that chased her all the way from school to the street corner where they now stood which she would estimate at least fifteen if not twenty city blocks.
Course she knew that was a brisk jog for the non-human that stood before her although humans prefer to deny their existence as pure mythology; however, Leah knew that John was not a normal person because of his unnatural speed and senses the rebellious boy wearing a red Superman shirt; a pair of Vans and torn blue jeans that if they got any more holes would be considered a Speedo. “I really have no idea why you took off the way you did.”
“I saw you and that bitch Miranda.” Leah yelled at John his face finally realizing what she was talking about. “So now you finally see, you must be some kind of stupid. I don’t like to be used John.”
“Wait,” John said reaching for her arm once again but missed as Leah disappeared into the crowd. “Damn it.”
Leah Russell is a different type of sophomore, although if you did not know her you would think that she was a normal high school girl trying to live in New York. Leah was born in a small town on the border of New Mexico and Arizona far away from her mother’s family because the family situation with her father’s sister, Ann who married a non-human named Thomas. At the age of three Leah’s parents were killed in a car accident and stayed with her cousins until a judge’s ruling could decide Leah’s permanent placement which caused a tremendous amount of anger between her mother’s family and her father’s in the end Leah was given to her Aunt Mary who lived in Long Island, New York which was on the other side of the United States away from the rest of her family and she learned quickly that is how Mary liked it.
Even though they were separated the cousins managed to keep in touch and told her that no matter what Mary had said about their family it wasn’t true, everyone including Leah could tell that Mary was just jealous of how close they all were to each other and secretly send her birthday and Christmas presents just to keep her spirits up.
Once Leah turned fifteen her entire life changed in her mother’s family when you reach fifteen years of age you are transferred to a school that is designed to your race or culture. This school is known as a very private school to most humans but to the ones who are enrolled it is a school where witches, non-humans, and hunters learn how to adapt their skills for whatever case they need them for as well as teach them how to survive in human society. Leah came from a long line of witches and according to her grandfather is the most powerful to come from the line with the exception of his great-great-grandmother. During her first semester at Rush Hill High School she met and befriended and half-non-human named John, in school he is known as the ‘jock’ and the one to inherit his father’s business holdings even though he has an older brother that should take over before him because of John’s popularity Leah never really talked to him much unless their texting or chatting on the computer to account for her loneliness she became friends with Anya another witch, Tyler a hunter and Chris a non-human. Thinking though the events of today was something Leah tried to push it out of her mind but it always came back replaying like a bad science fiction movie. She finally reached the door of her Aunt’s home she ignored her eleven-year old cousin who was too busy to notice her because of his video games which she was thankful for because one look in the mirror was all it took to know that she was crying the entire run back; she took off for her room to hide from the questions she would get if Mary saw her like this.
“Was that Leah who just ran in?” an old man’s voice came quietly from the kitchen to the young boy sitting in front of the T.V.
“Yes, grandfather. I think she was in a fight again because she just ran up to her room,” the young boy replied not looking away from his game as his grandfather walked past him and up the stairs to check on his granddaughter.
“Leah, dear are you okay?” Her grandfather said opening her bedroom door to catch her drying her eyes. “Darling, is everything all right?”
“Yes, grandpa; forgive me I’m a mess.” She said going back to her mirror as her grandfather sat down on her bed.
“Leah, come and sit down,” he requested and Leah complied sitting next to him. “You’re so much like your mother, do you know that?”
“No, I didn’t. Thank you for the complement though.” Leah said smiling a little she could only remember a little of her parents but all she had left were pictures and stories from other people who knew them.
“I don’t just mean in looks Leah, you have her spirit as well that’s why Mary always wants to keep you way from your father’s family.” Her grandfather said giving more confirmation that Mary was jealous of her mother’s happiness,  “I was actually happy when those two met when he asked for my blessing to marry my daughter he told me about your Aunt Ann and her husband and I had no problem with their life choices that’s how our cultures have evolved, I love Mary the same way that I love your mother; however her beliefs I do not agree with keeping our blood line pure by marrying other witches when my great-great-grandmother married a human man.”
“So I assume you know who I have been crying over.” Leah sighed part laughing knowing that her grandfather was getting to a point about her choice in men, and she was sure that he also knew that it involved John and his supposed ex-girlfriend Miranda.
“Yes, I do and I think that he’s a waste, but the way that you two look at each other reminds me of your grandmother and me when we fell in love.”
This time she really did laugh at her grandfather’s comparison, “Grandpa he doesn’t love me I’m pretty sure that he and Miranda are getting back together.”
Saying no more her grandfather left allowing her time to clean up and get ready for their evening meal that Mary demanded she look presentable for, she reached under her bed and pulled out a secret phone that her aunt and uncle bought for her 16th birthday and she dialed her cousin Karen.
“Hello?” a groggy teenager voice answered making Leah check the time on her alarm clock the read 4 p.m.
“Hey Karen,” she said softly trying not to alert anyone just in case Mary came home early. “Have you been sleeping all day?”
“Apparently, shit that means I missed work, I’m going to die tomorrow” Karen complained slightly passing the thought to the back of her brain knowing that her cousin needed her help for something.
Leah slightly laughed, she always loved talking to her cousins they always had a way of cheering her up when she needed it. Karen Reid was the second oldest of the family and the only girl so they needed each other to keep their sanity; not that Leah didn’t want to talk to Karen’s brothers but when it came to romance and boy trouble Karen was the only person she knew that she could talk to. Today was the last straw she wanted Miranda to back off but had no experience in the ways of fighting other women for a man’s affections, Karen however did. “I need your help with something relationship related.”
“Well then I think I know a thing or two about the opposite sex, is this the same guy you were telling me about the last time you ran back to Mary’s crying.” Karen said taking a shot in the dark and by her cousin’s silence knew that she got the bulls-eye.
“How did you know that I was crying?” she asked but passing the thought to the back of her mind, “either way you were right my calling is about John his ex-girlfriend is giving me trouble.”
Leah explained how Miranda has all but destroyed her self-esteem and her feelings for John. Karen knew the history of the pair and that Miranda was pretty decent at casting spells on others and judging by what Leah was explaining to her, Karen was able to tell that this woman had placed a spell on Leah probably as an attempt to scare Leah away from John and it would have worked if she had not called Karen when she did, and both the girls had an idea of how that woman was going pay for the trouble and heartache Leah had gone through.
“I’ll talk to Tom and see if I can get the next flight out.” Karen said calmly to her cousin who was still upset over the situation.
“Thanks Karen.” Leah said, her voice turning to a whisper as she heard more noises from the kitchen signaling that Mary was home, “I have to go now. Where are you going to stay when you get in?”
“Tom has a house on Long Island; I’m not sure if the power is up and running but it’ll be a good place for me to squat for a while.” Karen said when a knock came from her door. “That’s probably mom, hey what time do classes start?”
“9 o’clock, I leave around 8. I’ll talk to you tomorrow morning.” Leah said hanging up placing her phone back in its hiding spot and heading down to the kitchen where dinner and an argument was waiting.
Dinner had gone just as she expected, she thought that it could have gone differently as she looked at the brand new black eye that Mary had given her for some call that she got from the school about her running out of class during a lecture. She knew that she would have to sleep with an icepack on her face if she was going to get this swelling down by the time that she left for school in the morning. Leah grabbed an ice pack from her mini freezer and lied down on her bed knowing that by the morning Karen would be here to help her and hopefully give her the courage to take Mary to court if nothing else happened from this trip.

Karen had waited until her brothers were asleep before talking to her father about what she and Leah talked about on the phone. Her father was always on edge these days especially since their mother had come home from the hospital with the newest addition to the family. Karen found him standing by the fireplace in the den, just like he did every night before thinking about what happened over the day and what they were to do tomorrow.
“What is it Karen?” Tom said in a low voice but is still boomed like a thunder storm moving away from their house.
“I got a call from Leah today. She wanted to know if I could fly out and help her with a teenage problem.” Karen summarized leaving out names and such.
“What kind of problem, is Mary beating her?” Tom asked turning to his daughter holding back the panic he held for his niece.
“Tom, I think this is a guy problem.” A female voice came from the side of the room. “Let her go dear, it’ll be good for her to get away from the boys and see another girl her age.”
“Thanks mom.” Karen said as her mother walked over to her father with the new baby handing it to him.
“Tom, go to bed and let us girls talk.”
“Ann, you know I’m no good with babies.” Tom said hesitant with the new boy.
“I know that, he’s asleep now so he shouldn’t bug you.” Ann commented as Tom left the girls in the den and headed for bed.  “Now, what is this problem that Leah is having?”
“Ann, I promised that I wouldn’t say anything. She just needs me to help her with this.” Karen said trying to be as vague as possible. Ann took the hint and understood the way that teenage girls do when they have relationship problems, as such she let the subject drop and went to get the phone.
“I understand Karen; I was once a teenage girl too. Anyway I call the airlines you go and get packed.” Ann said lightly as she started to dial the number for the airport that they have used over the years. “Well get a move on.”
It didn’t take Karen to pack for what she guessed would be about a week give or take a day it was just a relationship thing between Leah, John, and Miranda. When she got downstairs Ann was standing by the door waiting for her daughter. Ann hugged the girl and opened the door to show a cab that was going to take her to the airport. Ann told Karen what to do once she arrived in Long Island and who to contact if she needed anything. Karen just nodded hugged her mother one more time before leaving in the cab.
