Chapter 8
John paced back-and-forth in the middle of the foyer he called the hospital an hour ago and was told that the read siblings as well as Leah Russell had been cleared for dismissal at nine o'clock that morning again he looked at his mother's colonial table cloth and it read the time as noon which made him case even more so much so that he never noticed his father was standing at the entrance to his office.
"I'm sure that there is a very good reason for them being late."
"And what would that be?" John said sharply knowing that he had thought of all the worst-case scenarios already. Though just as his father was about to speak his phone began to ring distracting the both of them are only a few seconds.
"Excuse me for a second son, this is work." His father said looking at his phone then turning towards the office closing the glass door behind him as John went back to pacing.
"Speak." John's father said in a stern tone as a young man in a NYPD uniform appeared in front of him.
"My Lord, the Reid children are on their way here." The boy said though John's father didn't know his name and wasn't interested in learning and he stopped the boys from speaking any further.
"How do you know this?"
"They came by the crime scene of the Aunt’s house." To be young man said softly.
"Does Morgan have any suspects?" He asked in a demanding town though he was sure that he had hidden his science very well that he doubted that even Tom's daughter would have noticed that he had been there.
"The only suspects that he thinks are responsible are the remaining vampires that you allowed to escape at the airport."
"So he will have to hire a Hunter how will that aid me in destroying Thomas's family?" He asked at least until he sensed movement outside his home Karen's presence along with that. "We shall discuss this somewhere else.”
"Yes my lord." The young man said as the pair disappeared from the office.
"Damn, why didn't you tell me that your boyfriend was filthy rich." Scott explained checking out the house that they would be staying in.
"Why do you care," Leah shot back to her cousin.
"Now you're in trouble little brother." Karen laughed as she heard her phone ringing. Seeing that it wasn't her father but Adam she quickly answered it, "hey, please tell me he's not there."
“No, were still in the clear; I was just wondering when you were coming to get me?” Adam said slightly anxious to leave the safe house before Tom got there.
“Yeah, I’ll be over there soon, I’m just dropping Leah off.” Karen said looking over to her and signing if he had everything under control, as he nodded she was getting back into her father’s old car. Leah turned back to her cousins with enough time to see Karen speeding off in the direction of the safe house.
“Where’s she off too?” She asked turning to Scott who continued to walk to the front door.
“Probably to get Adam before Tom gets into town and finds out that she snuck him in.” Scott explained laughing at the thought of his dad catching his sister in bed with her boyfriend.
“You mean to tell me that your dad doesn’t know that Adam is here.” Leah said surprised though it made sense considering that he would never have let a human come on a mission with his only daughter alone. “Karen has got some guts.” It was then that something made her freeze halfway up the path to John’s front door making Scott turn back at her silence.
“Everything okay,” He asked noticing the uncomfortable look that she had on her face.
“I don’t know. Something just feels off, and I can’t seem to place it.” She mumbled examining the exterior of John’s home.
“Could it be grief; you have been through a lot today, I mean with your aunts house and all.” Scott pointed out as he continued to walk towards John’s expansive house.
“The fact that you cannot sense this power worries me a little more than usual Scott.” She remarked taking her things from him and giving him a stern look because she knew that he had been trained better than that, they both had.
“Well you have to remember that I don’t come from a long line of witches; I don’t know anything about my birth mother.” Scott said recalling when Ann told them their history when they began training as children. “It might just be nerves. I mean you are going to be staying with your boyfriend and his dad is here too.”
“Maybe,” Leah said continuing towards the house placing the disturbing thought into the back of her mind, not thinking more on it even though her gut was telling her that she was right.
Though he had been watching the cousins from his lair the Demon Lord witnessed Leah’s questions and became infuriated with the girl even more than he already had been.
“Impossible! How can a witch sense my presence,” He shouted as he took his glass and threw it at the wall next to the screen causing his servants to run and hide because experience told them that when their master was angry he may just kill one of them to get out his frustration. “Christopher.” He called not looking around for the boy’s location.
“Yes sir,” Christopher said trying not to show any emotion toward the video of Leah on the screen.
“Who is that girl?” He asked freezing the video on Leah’s face.
“A low level witch, my lord, I have never met her before.” Christopher lied trying very hard to not look at the screen and have his emotions betray him, even though his master knew that he was lying the second he said low level.
“Don’t attempt to insult my intelligence boy.” He said grabbing Christopher by the throat and pinning him against the wall next to the screen. “Do you like this girl?”
“Yes sir. She’s a strong witch and I’ve been trying to get her to join us for some time.” Christopher finally said knowing that his master would just kill him and find another to replace him fairly quickly. Though he told his master that he only saw Leah as an asset and not as anything else, he wanted Leah all to himself and if she knew who Christopher was working with and would eventually surpass, why wouldn’t she join him?
“Since you like this girl so much, why hasn’t she joined our ranks?”
“She’s involved with someone else, and I am trying to fix that.” Christopher said still struggling to breathe against his master’s grip.
“And what would you do for this girl?” His master asked, as he began to put the boy on the ground interested in this girl as an asset more than Christopher was. “Would you kill anyone that got in your way to have her?”
“Yes sir, I would kill for her.” Christopher said looking at the screen and not at the eerie smile that was now on his master’s face as he began thinking of a plan to gain Leah’s trust and eliminate the Reid family in one fell swoop.
“Selen,” the man called while Christopher was still around.
“Yes, master.” Answered a young woman that appeared to be around the age of 22, her blonde hair draped her shoulders while the bangs covered her ocean blue eyes that seemed like she was staring into your soul her complexion was pale and some people thought that she had been sick and near death when she walked among humanity for whatever purpose was her own neither her master or the young lord knew why she found pleasure in this venture.
“I want you to help Christopher in killing some very annoying bugs.” The man said walking over to Selen waiting for her to ask him a question about her targets and she was tempted to do so, but she then remembered the warning she got and said nothing for several minutes. “Good at least now we understand each other. I have some business to attend to. Don’t do anything to mess this up.”
Though the warning was for Christopher, Selen took it as a threat to herself as well. Still she stayed where she was kneeling until both of them knew that he wasn’t coming back, it was then and only then she asked for information on her targets. “Who am I to kill?”
“You and I have the pleasure of killing in current offspring of the Reid family, considering that two of them currently walk the streets of our town.” Christopher said walking up to Selen as she rose to her feet. “I want to make Karen vulnerable, when we were at the nightclub the boy that was with her was called Adam, supposedly that’s her boyfriend, I want you to kill him.
This request came as a slight surprise but she had been planning something like this for centuries thought she knew that killing one of their own was the best way to make the Reid’s slightly weak if Christopher went after the witches anyway, but going after the non-human side of their complicated family was the worst idea that this young man could have thought of.
“Do you understand me Selen,” Christopher demanded snapping her out of secret plans about her newest assignment.
“Yes sir, I understand.” She said as Christopher nodded walking out the door to make his own plans to kill John and anyone else that got in his way.
