Chapter 9
Scott opened the big wooden doors and let Leah enter first like the gentleman that his father raised him to be, what neither of them expected was that John had been pacing the foyer all morning with no knowledge as to how they were.
“Oh thank God, I called the hospital hours ago and they said you had been discharged, and then I didn’t hear anything all day. Where’s Karen?” John said hugging Leah tightly as she crossed the threshold.
“Karen went to go and get her boyfriend and probable some other supplies we still don’t know who sent those vampires down here.” Scott said recalling the events that originally landed them in the hospital. “You can let go of my cousin now.”
“Oh sorry Leah,” John said taking a few steps back. “Karen didn’t have to leave we have enough food for everyone.”
“Yeah, it’s not that kind of supply run rich boy,” Scott said not really paying attention to the dirty look that Leah shot. “How loaded are you by the way?”
“Scott now’s not the time.” Leah scolded. “We should probably get settled in, and wait for Karen.”
“Alright then, I’ll show you to your rooms.” John said taking Leah’s bag and leading them up the stairs.
While she managed to avoid every cop on the road, Karen made it back to the safe house by 12:30pm to find Adam waiting for her at the door way with her duffle bag and another bag that wasn’t either of theirs.
“So what time did you get released from the hospital?”
“I don’t know 9-ish, I guess.” She said walking up to the young man who met her and hugged her tightly. “I didn’t mean to worry you Adam.”
“What happened?” Adam asked knowing that the only reason that Karen had ever been late for was when something bad happened and sometimes that included family tragedies. “Who was it?”
Karen slowly pulled away slightly annoyed that Adam knew her that well, but decided to cough up the truth considering that it was going to be all over the news channels anyway. “It’s Leah’s Aunt, she and her family were killed last night by what I would guess was the remaining vampires from the airport.”
“Damn,” was all Adam could muster for a few moments while the pair loaded up the car. “How’s Leah taking it?”
“Like every other person that’s had their family killed.” Karen said trying to finish the conversation before her father showed up. “Come on, everyone’s waiting.”
“Yeah,” He said getting into the passenger seat closing the door just as Karen sped off in the direction that she just came in “Well if your attitude’s any indication, I’m going to say that Leah’s fine.”
As the pair drove back to John’s house a black Harley Davidson roadster pulled up to the curb in front of the old safe house and parked.  “Kids,” the man said as he took off his helmet.
His hair was a red and grey type of mix his eyes were as green as Ireland during the spring and while he knew that his daughter had snuck her boyfriend onto a mission though it was family related, he simply laughed and let her have her small victory at least for a little while, he was walking up the walk way when he heard the phone ringing though he knew that no one except his wife and children knew that he was in New York, so he became curious as to who would be calling his old home for his daughter.
“Hello.” He answered and to his surprise found out that his daughter had once again found herself in trouble with the law only this time it was outside the state of Arizona.
“Well, Thomas what have I told you about coming into New York?” came Captain Morgan’s voice on the other end, curious as to why he was in town.
“Don’t worry Phillip; I’m just here for Karen.” He said knowing that Karen had gotten under his skin just like he had done all those years ago.  “Should I apologize now or later for the trouble she’s caused your department.”
“Just tell you daughter that it wasn’t the vampires like we thought. Tom I think she’s really pissed some big people off.” Morgan told his old friend knowing how he cared about his family above anything else because of what happened to his first wife.
“Do you have any idea as to who it may have been?” Tom asked slightly worried that it was the person that he didn’t want any of his children fighting right now.
“We have hit every dead end possible which leads me to suspect the only non-human entity that could slaughter a family and get away with it.” Morgan said and judging by the silence on the other end he knew his assumption was right. “How much trouble is your family really in Tom?”
“She’s in a lot of trouble if he is involved. Phillip there may be significant damage I don’t know how the department will be able to cover all this up.” Tom said he thumb and index pinching the bridge of his nose while he tried to think of a plan with the Chief of Police on the line.
“We’ll figure something out; it’s New York for peat’s sake.” Morgan laughed trying to remain calm though they both thought the worse of their current situation they were praying for the best.
Karen made it back to John’s house faster then she left it and it kind of surprised both her and Adam. “Not one speed trap in the fifteen minutes and the three cops we passed, not one pulled us over.”
“It’s either we’re just really lucky, or they’re really stupid,” Karen smirked as they walked through the door with a noticeable hop in her step.
“You don’t think that Tom had something to do with it do you?” Adam said slightly unnerved because of how many times they had been pulled over back home.
“God, I hope not.” Karen laughed as they entered the house. “Because if he found out that you were her with me I would never hear the end of it and you would be dead.”
Adam didn’t laugh because he knew that it was more than likely true and Tom scared him more than anything else that Karen had ever been up against so far since they had been together. As they entered Adam was amazed by all the antiques and memorabilia that littered the walls of John’s home. “See anything you like?” Came a voice from behind the pair, and made Adam jump a little thinking that it was Tom.
“No sir,” Adam said no thinking about who he was talking to, but feared for the worst only when he finally turned around he didn’t see Tom but a man that he assumed from his body language was John’s father making him even more nervous. “I was just admiring all your decorations.”
“Nice recovery dear.” Karen laughed as she noticed John coming down the stairs with a surprised look on his face. “What you said that we could stay.”
“Yeah but I wasn’t expecting you boyfriend to be a part of that generalization.” He said trying to avoid the next question that was coming to his father’s mind, “Come on I’ll take you to the guest rooms.”
“Thanks,” she said grabbing the heavier duffel bag from one of the butlers, “Don’t worry about this one.”
“You sure they won’t look into your personal items.” John said as the three of them went up the stairs out of his father’s hearing range. “But I will need my wallet back.”
“Karen you didn’t.” Adam sighed as she pulled out a leather wallet with engraved initials from her side pocket handing it back over to the young boy. “And you were doing so well.”
Karen laughed at her boyfriend’s attempt at a joke which wasn’t that funny but she felt that a good laugh could make everything better. “I didn’t take anything, I just thought it was cool and wanted a closer look.”
“So you ask, normal people don’t pickpocket,” John said turning away as Karen placed her hands on Adams arm trying not to touch anything else.
“John do we honestly look like normal people to you,” Karen sighed knowing that although Adam was in fact human the moment they started dating normal was like a dream to him now. John didn’t say anything back, he just paused, thought about it and shook his head knowing that he would have to agree with her and didn’t want to at that moment.
“You know, besides your house this is the first mansion that I’ve been in with this many decorations.” Adam said making a general observation as Karen was trying not to touch anything but enjoyed the scenery.
“John, is your family from Ireland?” Karen said noticing a sword on a wall that looked like the one that was over placed over the den fire place in her home.
“Yeah, dad came over here in the early 1800s why?” John said looking at the sword that Karen was staring at. “Dad said that is was a pair but one was stolen from an old friend that ran away with the woman that he was in love with before he met my mother, he doesn’t really like talking about what happened way back then.”
Adam knew why Karen was staring at the sword and said nothing letting her think about John’s story and by the way she was staring at it, he could tell that the gears in her head were working in overdrive as they continued to follow John to the remaining guest room. As they entered they noticed that it was just as decorative as the interior of the house with every painting and picture placed in the perfect spot to liven up the room and make it feel more like home. “Your mother’s an interior decorator isn’t she?” Karen said placing the weapons back on the dresser and opening the drawers to find all their clothes neatly put away.
John didn’t say anything about his mother’s career because again he would have to agree with Karen so he just laughed and paid the comment no mind. “Leah and Scott are on either side of your room and if you need anything the maid can get it for you there’s a speaker button on the nightstand.”
“Holy crap Karen, I think we’re in heaven.” Adam laughed as he spread out on the bed sinking into a cozy cloud. “Babe, this is so much better than Tom’s safe house.”
“I’m glad you’re enjoying it.” Karen said trying to hurry John along so she could talk to her brother without prying ears and thankfully for her sake Leah was just leaving her room.
“Where you able to beat you dad?” she asked giggling as Adam found the sliding door to the balcony. Leah was about to call to Adam when she noticed the look on Karen’s face and took it as a signal to get John away from her as soon as possible. “John you wouldn’t happen to have a library would you?”
“Yeah there’s one downstairs, I’ll show you.” John said taking Leah’s hand leading her down the path that they just took not seeing Leah look back to her cousin who was knocking on her brother’s door.
Scott opened the door to find his sister pushing herself in with no invite which usually meant that something was wrong. “Geez Karen.”
“I need you to remember that story dad always told us.” Karen said throwing her brother a shirt to cover the pale scared skin making her feel guilty about the most recent bout that they had been in and her losing control of herself.
“What story Karen; dad told us hundreds of stories.” Scott said tossing the shirt aside knowing that it annoyed her so much but he was proud that he had been working out with their dad before going to school while they were sleeping in, he got sick and tired of trying to argue with his sister in the dark and reached for the light turning on the desk lamp that was next to the bed. Showing off his pale skin with the six pack he formed over the summer again Karen threw a shirt at him and then noticed the tattoo that was on his shoulder.
“Does mom know about that?” Karen said as he finally put a shirt on once she noticed it.
“No and she’s not going to find out right?” Scott said giving her a look that made her shiver as she nodded in agreement. “Now what story are you talking about?”
“The one with the sword above the fire place,” Karen said sitting on her brother’s bed, “When I was walking down the hall Adam was commenting about all the decorations and I saw it hanging on the wall the same one that Tom has but I can’t remember the story and John’s father has a similar story but it doesn’t sound right so I would very much like to hear dad’s version.”
“Ok, ok Karen breathe.” Scott said trying to calm her down. “The dual swords, the one that dad keeps just in case they run into each other again.”
“That’s the one.” Karen said as her brother sat next to her. “John said that his father and Tom were in love with the same woman and fought over her.”
“Ok, that’s not the story I remember him telling.” Scott said trying to recall his father’s story. “Ok the way I remember him telling was this; when dad was coming over to Scotland his friend was the captain of the ship he was on and they were fighting over a crew member that dad wanted to hire so they fought over employment, dad won and each man kept a sword as payment for the crewman; at least that’s how dad put it.” Scott said giving her a synopsis of what Tom had told them.
“Think there could have been more behind it?” Karen questioned thinking out loud and not really wanting an opinion from anyone as another knock came from the door. “Leah, what’s up?”
“Jesus Karen, don’t be so relaxed.” Leah said barging in closing the door behind her slight panic in her face.
“Leah what’s wrong?” Scott said approaching the two girls.
“Like you two don’t know,” Leah laughed and then noticed the blank stares and questioning looks between the siblings. “Holy crap you two really didn’t notice.”
“Notice what?” Karen said as an unsettling feeling hit and it was a feeling that she knew very well and she swore more then she had in the last thirty-six hours. “Dad’s here.”
“What, how did he know we were staying here?” Scott said knowing that although he told his father about Karen’s transformation at the airport he didn’t tell him where they were staying. “I know you or Adam didn’t tell him.”
“We’re in serious trouble. John’s talking to him now.” Leah said not noticing the look on her their faces.
“Leah think very carefully about what you just said.” Karen whispered very slowly so her cousin would understand the words and think about why she left her boyfriend with her uncle. When the realization hit Leah’s face she ran out of the room and down the hall faster than Karen could keep up. The three of them finally made it to the staircase to find that Tom was laughing with John at something that the three of them missed.
“Ah, there are my two amazing children,” Tom said making the sibling turn to each other.
“He’s complementing us, how much trouble are we in.” Scott said knowing that his sister had a history of getting in trouble with their father and they both knew so after giving him a quick glare she looked at her father who was once again talking to John.
“Well considering that he’s joking around with John and he hasn’t killed him yet, I’d say that we should have written out our wills.” Karen said as she turned back to her father as both Scott and Leah cursed.  “Daddy, how did you know where we were?”
“The NYPD tends to notice a 17 year old girl driving a classic 1951 Chevy Convertible in a residential area.” Tom said smiling politely at his daughter as she lowered her head and Scott glared at her. “Don’t hit your sister Scott.”
“I didn’t hit her,” he said pausing and looking innocent towards his father, “yet.”
“That’s the word I was waiting for.” Tom said looking back over to John. “Now as for you young man; is your father home.”
“Dad,” Karen said stopping John from answering her father, “before you meet his dad, I think there’s something upstairs that you really should see.”
“Not now Karen I need to discuss business with...”
“Patrick,” John said “Patrick Callahan.”
“Patrick Callahan?” John said slightly surprised at the last name, “Was your father born in Ireland?”
“Yes sir, he said that he immigrated here in the early 1800s on his own ship.” John said not noticing the look on Tom’s face but Karen and Scott both noticed and looked at each other. “But he’s not here right now, you actually just missed him.”
“Oh I’m sure I did.” Tom said the Irish accent starting to come back to his voice slightly as Karen acted fast.
“Dad why don’t you visit Captain Morgan, and fill him in on what’s going on then I’ll meet up with you to talk about the past few days ok?” Karen said pushing her father out the door as he grabbed her arm and whispered something in her ear before leaving.
“Miss, there is a phone call for you in the kitchen.” Said one of John’s butlers as Karen closed the door behind her father, slightly unnerved for kicking him out of a house. Leah nodded and followed the butler into the kitchen.
“Well what did dad have to say,” Scott said walking up to his sister who was signing something to fast for him to process. “Wait what?”  Again she signed slower and said that all of them were in way deep and that Bryan was on the way with some much needed supplies. It was look on Scott’s face that made John nervous.
“John where’s your dad’s library?” Karen said her eyes never leaving her brother who was signing back to her questioning her information about the library.
“It’s right through those French doors.” John said getting dizzy trying to figure out what the pair were saying but before he got a chance to ask they both were through the doors and gone. More nervous now John went to go find Leah in the kitchen who looked more depressed then nervous like she was when her uncle was in the foyer. “What’s wrong?”
“That was someone from Social Services; they got my name from Morgan who had me as a survivor of my aunt’s estate.” Leah said expecting to hear questions from him about her aunt and then he’d realize why they arrived at his home so late, but John just stood there quietly waiting for her to finish and that surprised her more than anything because from her experience when people hear the bad news they feel pity and ask questions that should have been asked a long time ago. “I was told that because I am still 16 I have to go back to Arizona and live with my cousins and finish my school there since they are the only family that I have left.”
“But what about everyone here I’m sure that if Anya and the other’s knew about this they would put up a fight with the State about your care.” John said feeling his anger skyrocket. “And what about us, I mean we just got together, after all the bullshit that we’ve been through the system is what breaks us apart,”
“Seems that way,” Leah sighed leaning her head back against the wall, kind of bummed about not being able to stay.
“No!” John protested, angry at the situation considering that Leah was the love of his life and just had a bombshell dropped on the both of them. “I’ll fight, you can’t just go to the other end of the country where we will never be able to talk or see each other.”
“John, we don’t have a choice in this one, and when I do go back to Arizona it’s not like we’ll never talk to each other, I mean there’s email and phone calls we just have to set up a schedule that works for the both of us.”

Karen and Scott made it the library fairly quickly and gave each other a second to make sure that they were clear of curious ears. Karen looked around and was in awe of the massive room filled top to bottom with books and ladders to make it up that high. She sighed as she leaned against the back of the oak desk that sat in the middle of the room with a dark brown leather chair that she tried to refrain from sitting in.
“Alright now what did you get us into.”  Scott said sitting in a brown leather couch to match the chair and the desk.
“I had no idea that this would happen, Scott honest. Leah called me a few days ago and said that she was having some boy trouble.”
“So this involved John? Karen how could you not know who his father was?” Scott said placing his elbows on each of his knees cupping his blonde head in his hands.
“Hey, I asked the guy at the airport he wouldn’t give it.” Karen said starting to defend herself which she found slightly unnecessary. “I thought that dad said this guy was dead anyway.”
“That’s what I was thinking but to be sure we would have to ask dad.” Scott said digging through his pockets for his phone. “Look before I call I need to know what else dad said,”
“He said that Patrick was on the chart too, and that he’s calling Bryan and Ann to bring supplies.” Karen said summarizing what her father actually said mostly because a majority of it was him swearing.
“What chart?” Scott said but Karen didn’t know either, so she shrugged and got a disgruntled look from her brother. “That doesn’t really help, either way if we have trouble we better fill everyone in.”
“Yeah,” Karen sighed in agreement slightly unhappy about this because they both knew that she was going to have to give them the same answers again. As they headed out the door Karen stopped feeling like someone just kicked her in the stomach and the pale look on her face and the beginning discoloration around her eyes made Scott take notice.
“Karen, what is it?”
“Call mom; tell her that something’s wrong.” Karen said through her teeth her hand gripping the doorknob tightly. “Tell Leah, to get the kitchen ready too.”
“Leah!” Scott called from the foyer as Karen froze and looked toward the door, and as soon as he saw his cousin and her boyfriend he bolted out of the way. “Get in the kitchen.”
“What’s going on?” John asked as Leah cursed looking towards Karen. “Someone fill me in please!”
“We’re under attack, or about to be anyway.” Leah said heading back towards the kitchen before remembering what she was going to need, “Come on, you can help me in the kitchen, Scott, is Ann coming.”
Scott was in the middle of the phone call to his mother when she asked so he just put a figure up at the two and continued with his mother. “Mom, we’re going to need some heavy fire power.”
