Chapter 10
Karen waited in the foyer, she could feel something was coming and it felt familiar but she couldn’t figure out where it was from. She knew that it wasn’t from Patrick, she was certain of that and it wasn’t something that she encountered while she was in New York, it was something from before then, and it was bugging her about where she had felt this amount of evil before, she continued to stand there for several more minutes running through every person human and non-human that she had encountered since she began traveling with her father and brothers, but nothing was coming to mind, that was until Scott came back to the foyer.  “Hey mom wants to know what exactly is coming.”
“I don’t know, it feels familiar but I can’t place where I’ve felt this before.” Karen said her eyes never leaving the door. “Is Bryan here yet?”
Scott put his ear to the phone and listened to his mother as she was going over her check list, before sending her eldest son to their location. Her voice came like a cool breeze when she was finally able to answer him. “Bryan is leaving now, sweetheart did you take your father’s shotgun?” She paused for his response for Bryan and Scott relayed what he had been told to Karen who was still intently watching the door just in case she needed to act quickly before her big brother showed up. “Scott, dear let me speak to your sister.”
“Yes ma’am.” He said cautiously walking up to his sister and it wasn’t until he got closer to her that he began to see the tint of silver in her auburn hair and her eyes began to turn into the icy blue that their father and brother had, normally Karen wouldn’t transform unless absolutely necessary or if one of their family was in immediate danger like what had happened in the airport, but the thing that he found to be different from the last time that was that her transformation was taking longer than it had before, he was going to ask why but decided to wait until his brother arrived hoping that either Bryan or at least their father would have the answer. “Karen, Mom needs to talk to you.”
“Alright, hey do me a favor and go help set up in the kitchen.” Karen said her voice was soft and held more concern than he had ever heard from her before, since they had been children all that came out of Karen’s mouth was sarcasm or her infamous ‘I dare you’ tone that she used in most if not all her fights, this worried Scott but again with the impending attack, he placed the thought in the back of his mind until later, so for now he simply nodded as he handed her the phone and went back into the kitchen, to find Leah and John already in the middle of a fight, though he wasn’t sure what it was about.
“How’s Karen?” Leah asked, knowing that something was wrong with her cousin though she couldn’t place it.
“She’ll be fine. Bryan’s on the way, Ann says that we have to get ready she’ll call when we know what we’re up against.” Scott said getting in between the pair, before John said something. “So I hear that you’re going back to Arizona?”
“We can talk about that later.”
“She has a point little brother, now’s not the time for small talk.” A deep voice came from the far corner of the kitchen causing the three teenagers to jump and look towards the intruder.
“Jesus, Bryan.” Scott scolded relaxing glad that Karen was still in the foyer. “Does Mom know anything?”
“No, Karen still can’t place the sense, but she thinks that is was from the same being that broke into the house when we went on vacation.” Bryan stated taking the duffel bag off his shoulder and dropping it to the counter with a thud. “Ann wasn’t sure who it was that’s attacking so she figured to put everything that she would use to defend until we can kill this son-of-a-bitch.”
“Holy shit,” John gaped as the three of them started to pull all kinds of powders and elixirs along with weapons that no normal person would have in their gun cabinet and 75% of them were military grade. “Are you legally able to carry these?”
“If by legal you mean that they’re from my dad’s military contracts dating back to the Revolution then yes, otherwise you shouldn’t ask questions that you don’t want to know the answers to.” Bryan said as he pulled out a machete and a sawed-off shotgun.
“Ok then,” John said as Leah just shot her eldest cousin a look.
“Bryan, I don’t think that we need this much, considering that our sister is slowly transforming in the foyer.” Scott pointed out as he placed everything that he would need around the stove-top. Bryan simply paused looking at his brother through his ice blue eyes letting the current information sink in before running out into the foyer to check. “Wow that was faster than I’ve ever seen him move.”
“Her transformation,” Leah began, “is something wrong with Karen?”
“I wasn’t sure until I saw Bry, sprint out of the kitchen.” Scott said, now more worried about his sister and the upcoming battle, as he continued to prepare. “John are their anymore people in the house?”
“Just the staff,”
“Give them the night off, I don’t need any human casualties, and I need you to go as well.” Scott said as he began to mix a spell. John just stayed there staring as Leah joined in waiting for his chance to speak. “Why are you still here?”
“I can get the staff out, but I want to stay.” John said and Leah knew what was going to happen next, so she left to evacuate the mansion.
“You’re a fucking idiot.” Scott said placing his hands on the counter glaring at the boy that tried. “You think that just because you’ve seen into the reality of what they teach you in school, you know how to fend for yourself.”
“Well no, not entirely but I did help at the airport.” John said and as a result Scott gave him a punch to the face.
“You think that what you did helped us. It’s your fault that Karen and Leah ended up in the hospital in the first place.” Scott shouted, that was when realization hit about what really happened that night.
“It’s not your fault,” Karen’s voice rang before from the entrance to the kitchen before Scott flew off the handle any further. “Both Leah and I are fine; more or less.”
“Everything ok,” Scott asked noticing that Karen’s hair had completely changed color.
“No, I don’t know why, she’s slowly transforming and I don’t have time right now to figure it out.” Bryan said crossing his tan and bulky arms across his chest and eyes his sister.
She didn’t even bother to look at him, Karen could feel him thinking or at least speculating that she had to have done something serious to have something like this happen, she felt bad for keeping the fact that she was pregnant from them, but she knew that if they knew about it both her brothers would keep her from fighting and with the sense that she was getting Bryan wouldn’t be able to fight this guy by himself so she shrugged him off and refused to respond. “It’s not of any importance right now,”
“Karen, you’re sure.” Scott said and Karen just looked at him and said nothing.
“My gut is telling me that whoever it is coming to attack us will be here soon and it won’t be an easy fight.” She muttered walking away from the boys who just stood there stunned at what their very impulsive sister had just said and done. Knowing that she was a safe enough distance away she felt another wave of pain and held down the scream that she had been holding since the transformation had begun and she knew that she could attribute the pain to only one thing; the baby that she was carrying was transforming as well to keep up with her.
“Bryan, I don’t like the way she’s acting.” Scott said as Leah came back to the kitchen.
“Everyone’s been evacuated.” Leah said getting a shocked look from all three men, who didn’t even realize that she had left. “John, you may as well stay, just stay upstairs.”
“Why?” he asked slightly confused at her statement.
“I put a barrier around the house, stretching from the street to the patch of trees behind your house.” Leah said imitating the distance with her hands, “also, if we happen to cause damage, no one will notice.”
“I was just about to cast a spell for that.” Scott said pointing to the pot that he just brewed.
“Well maybe you should have been focusing on that instead of telling my boyfriend as to how I ended up in the hospital.” She spat back. Bryan simply laughed at the look on both their faces and thought that Scott should have known better than to do that. “How I ended up in the hospital doesn’t change the fact that it happened, so get over it. Now Bryan go and join Karen in the foyer, you two are our first line of defense.”
“Yes ma’am,” Bryan saluted leaving to see his that Karen had fully transformed and took a defense position in front of the door.
“You ready for this?” Bryan said and got no response which made him slightly nervous. “Karen?”
“Yeah, I’m ready.” Karen said finding herself again and hiding the pain that she was in, though she knew that her cover wouldn’t be able to last forever, in fact she was about ready to double over.
“Ok,” Bryan said as he began to transform himself, his hair turned just as silver as hers if not more so. Bryan’s hair grew only slightly longer that it originally was while his eyes stayed the same blue as his sister’s, their father had told them when they were younger that if they stayed in this state they would have been mistaken for twins by the mortals that they protected. “How long do you think?”
Karen didn’t get to open her mouth before the thick oak doors of John’s house blew wide open, with a tall man in a pitch black suit stood in the middle of the doorframe. “Here we go.”
