Chapter 14
Gabe sat in the kitchen watching Elinore like a lion watched a pack of zebras. Elinore was slowly chewing her eggs nervously, trying her hardest to ignore the scrutiny. A smile hit her lips as she finished her food. She'd been so hungry when she'd woken up. The night before she'd had no energy and appetite because of the days events.
Her eyes met Gabe, and the smirk he gave her was more then sexual. “Would you like to experience a night with a wolf?” He asked. The tone of his voice sending shivers through her body.
Elinore raised her eyebrow at him, “You were thinking about having sex with me while I ate French toast?”
Gabe chuckled, “I was just trying to find a solution to the problem, if you were to just have sex with a werewolf your father wouldn't be able to get you again.” Elinore chocked on the orange juice.
“How the hell does that work?!” She shouted, looking at Gabe for answers. A growl caused her to look towards the doorway. Gabe chuckled lowly as Landen pulled Gabe out of the chair and pushed him towards the living room.
“Wait!” Elinore argued, standing up to reach around Landen, even though her cheek hit his back she was able to grasp the vest Gabe wore. Landen grabbed her wrist and pulled it back, off of him in a tight grip that made her gasp.
“We were having a conversation!” She shouted, pushing in front of Landen to block his grip on Gabe. Although she couldn't see Gabe, the smirk he showed to Landen had Landen boiling.
“A pointless conversation! He's lying to you,” Landen returned, staring at her. The look in his eyes told him he was hiding something, the full truth was yet to come out of his mouth.
“Are you lying to me?” Elinore asked, spinning to look at Gabe. His smirk was still along his lips. His shoulders raised, and fell as if he were simply unemotional on the topic.
“Are you lying to me?” Elinore asked, spinning to look at Gabe. His smirk was still along his lips. His shoulders raised, and fell as if he were simply unemotional on the topic.
“Who knows? If you are not interested in the idea, then there is no reason to explain,” he stated, turning around and beginning to walk away.
“If it'll keep away my dad, I'm up to hear any idea!” She shouted, almost offended that he was taking such a suggestion lightly.
“If I explain, you will consider it?” Gabe asked. Landen gripped her arm. “You don't want to know,” he whispered, leaning down next to her ear, “the suggestion is against werewolf code, it will be the end of your life.”
Her eyes met his as he tried to stand up right again. “With that bastard still alive, and eyes set on me, what life do I have?” She asked. Landen looked like he could feel her pain at the moment his eyes connected with hers. She hated it. She hated knowing that he could see her pain. However, she hated it more that he was trying to stop her from finding out a way to avoid her father.
Elinore turned to look at Gabe one more. His hands were deep in his pocket, giving her a look of curiosity. Elinore tried to ignore Landen's hard stare she could feel from behind her. “Tell me,” she begged.
Gabe smiled, casting Landen a look over her shoulder. He held out his hand, “We'll talk in private.”
When Elinore reached for his hand, another hand grabbed her. Landen pulling her against him. His hand holding her stomach with a firm but gentle hold, “Like hell, she's not going any where with you.”
Gabe chuckled. He shrugged his shoulders, “I'll tell her in front of you then,” he murmured, stepping closer to Elinore. She could feel her breath quicken, her heart rate accelerate at the close proximity.
“You know about the ball, the purpose to find mates?” Gabe asked. Elinore only nodded, confused with where the conversation was going. Gabe's smirk returned, “Well, once a werewolf takes a mate, it is final, that claim on the bit-woman, will be known to all werewolves, even you won't physically be the same, you will heal faster and be able to live a little longer. To at least two hundred years old, not eternity but, enough time. Anyways, once there's a claim, another werewolf, say your father, will never be able to go near you, touch you, sniff you, talk to you. It's because you belong to another male, and pack.”
Elinore listened quietly thinking of what was going through his head, “And thats just what having sex with the side of forever vows?” She asked quietly, “Is there anyway he could go around the claim?”
Gabe shook his head, “Sure, he could try, but it would result in instant execution by werewolf code.”
Elinore chuckled, “That all?” Gabe laughed and nodded in simple way. Landen growled, “You're willing to give up the rest of your life-.”
Elinore set him a look that shut him up. The look of frustration, of misunderstanding. “Y-You don't understand it do you?” She asked quietly. “I was living a great life,” she whispered beneath her breath, “but even then I knew he was still out there, now that he is after me, I feel as if I'm already dead. If there is a way, I can feel safe, even if it only lasts a day, or the rest of my life, I'll take it.”
Tears threatened to spill but she refused to let him see it, looking at the wall to their right. Her hand covering her face, “I-It just sounds like an arranged marriage, and that sounds even easier then finding a real one.” She gave out a dry laugh before she wiped her eyes and looked at him.
“You said werewolves wouldn't do that though? They wouldn't get involved with a human?” She whispered, remembering his words. Gabe filled in for Landen, “That is partially true, we do not take on a human simply because a female werewolf will handle us better because they have the same characteristics of sense, and culture. Its just easier, however, there are mixed couples out there somewhere.”
Elinore sighed and shook her head in disbelief. “This is insane,” she whispered. Another laugh escaped her, and she couldn't quite understand how she could find humor in it. She just couldn't believe that a marriage could keep her father away.
“The other option is killing him,” she whispered, “there's no way to take on a temporary-”
Landen answered her. “No,” he was unamused, completely serious and it was a warning.
Elinore collapsed back onto the couch. Landen and Gabe were both standing there, watching her quietly. She couldn't stand it, “What?!” She asked.
“What's the verdict?” Landen asked in annoyance, with a look that told her it was a stupid question.
“Its definitely worth debating!” She argued. Gabe laughed, “I could see the potential mates as we speak, although, it'd be a dangerous choice going with Landen.”
Elinore's cheeks flushed, her eyebrows going up at the accusation. However, curiosity got to her first, “Why?” She asked. Gabe opened his mouth but Landen beat him, “That's my business you're talking about!” Gabe closed his mouth and nodded, before a smirk hit his lips, “However, you could also choose me as well.”
Elinore blushed at the blatant proposal. Landen wasn't as flattered. “What the hell Gabe?!” He shouted, his hands grabbing the collar of the vest. Gabe snatched his wrists. Elinore with shocked at the strength he showed. She'd seen Landen dent the taxi without having a bruise to show for it. However, Gabe tossed him into the wall like one would a tennis ball. Landen's eyes glowed, and the strangest thing happened to Gabe.
His fangs widened, but considerably larger than Landen's. In addition to those sharp canines, his eyes weren't just a golden color as Landen's or Porter's they were a neon purple, a violet. His nails had grown and his muscles looked veiny, almost as if they were going to explode.
Landen charged him, his arms wrapping around Gabe's torso as he tackled him to the ground. Elinore was to shocked to react to any of it. There was something in the way they were fighting, it wasn't just wrestling, it was almost as if it were a serious duel to the death. Landen's knuckles landed straight into Gabe's face, and the sickening crack had her thinking he'd just pushed Gabe's nose into his brain and killed him.
However, Gabe stood up with out a single wound. Blood dripped from his nose, but his grin was almost electrifying. The laugh that escaped him was almost as if he was amused at Landen's attempt. Landen's body began to crack in several places and the realization of what was about to happen scared her.
Standing up she stepped between the two men, “Stop it.”
The words slipped from her lips with a serious tone she'd formed from zero confidence. She knew that when dealing with a creature you'd need to show authority but in her body, she felt like a spider steering into a pest controller's spray.
Gabe was watching her with the look he'd given her over breakfast. Looking over his shoulder he watched Landen, still fighting with control. He huffed, “Still as uncontrollable as ever.”
Stepping forward, he cupped Elinore's cheek, before she could argue, his lips had taken hers with a fury she'd never felt before. His lips were tasted her, but it felt so different then anything she'd ever felt. The control he had was almost scary, her thoughts were instantly fuzzy and when his tongue swiped across her lips she felt her legs threaten to give out.
He pulled away and smirked at her heavy breathing. Turning his back on her, with a calm manner she could only hope to master was threatening. Turning her back she stared at Landen reluctantly. His eyes were still glowing, Blood was trickling from a wound caused by embedding his fangs in his lower lip and he was babying his wrist in his other hand.
Carefully she approached him. “Don't come near me,” he growled out. She instantly stopped, his voice didn't sound human. When his eyes changed, they were like looking into windows. Hurt, shame, regret, showed for only a few moments before he turned his back and began to head for the nearest bathroom.
Elinore didn't like the way he was walking away. Quickly, she caught up and grabbed his unhurt elbow. “Landen!” She pleaded, for him to stay with her, listen to her, although he'd witnessed it with her own eyes.
Without thinking she pushed herself up on her toes, to kiss him. However, losing her balance she slammed her lips against his. Strong arms wrapped around her to push her away, but his lips still worked against hers. The passionate way his hand rubbed the small of her back, the other hand tangling into her hair.
His lips closed around her bottom lip as he pulled back and she felt the heat from his breath as he leaned into the crook of her neck. Quietly she leaned against him, falling to his chest when she leaned back on her feet. “I didn't know he would do something like that, and I couldn't think because he was so-so weird, it was abnormal,” she tried to explain.
“And I'm not?” He countered with a terse laugh. Elinore sighed against him.
“I've had time to get used to you, and seen your side, I am fine, being around you,” she whispered before someone cleared their throat. She looked up at Porter with a blush streaked across her face in embarrassment.
“I would like to use my own bathroom if thats alright?” He said, a knowing smirk on his own face. Landen and Elinore quickly moved out of the way. Porter stepping into the bathroom.
Elinore went back to the couch. Her eyes set on where Gabe had pushed Landen into the wall. There was a small crack. “How's your back?” She asked as Landen pulled a leather coat out of the closet.
“Fine,” he returned.
“Where are you going?” She added. It'd been a while since she'd left the house and her boredom was always turning into a curious, five year old's mind.
“Going to Devon's,” he muttered. She could see the annoyance beginning on his face. Although, it didn't stop her.
“Can I come?” She replied. The look he gave her told her she was being stupid. Elinore had seen that look many times since she'd arrived.
Her eyes followed Landen as he grabbed his motorcycle helmet off the coffee table. He stepped into his boots at the door and gave her one last look. “Be careful, don't get into trouble,” he murmured. His hand wrapped around the door handle and he pulled it open.
He wasn't there the next second, flying backwards until he hit the stairs. “Gabe!” He shouted. Elinore didn't know if he needed help or was screaming a new curse word. Slowly, she peaked over the couch, slow bits of fear creeping into her body. She'd never seen anyone fly as fast as Landen had.
A familiar person stepped through the door. A grin hit her face as she stepped up to meet the vampire who'd tried to kill her in order to lead her to UR's Headquarters. She stood in front of him, before her arms wrapped around him in a hug, “Hey! How've you been?”
She was pulled out of his arms and pushed behind a black vest. Gabe was standing in front of her, his eyes a fluorescent purple. The vampire gave him a daring look. “Is she always this stupid?” The vampire asked.
“What do you want?” Gabe muttered before adding, “I hope not.”
The vampire chuckled, looking back at Elinore. “I need her help,” he whispered, almost regrettably. Landen groaned as he stood up and cracked his back. Elinore flinched at the loudness.
“My help?” She asked, “Come in, have some coffee!” Elinore walked into the kitchen, unbeknown having three males staring at her as if she were an idiot.
“Oh, you only drink blood right?” Elinore asked, thinking that was the cause of the look.
“You-You don't just invite a vampire in!” Landen yelled at her, his hands flailing in the air with disbelief. Elinore gawked, “Oh shit! I totally forgot about that rule!”
The vampire started laughing. His hands catching his sides as he stayed on the patio outside the front door. “S-She's too much.”
Landen growled, pointing a threatening finger at the man, “If you come in, I'll kick your undead ass!”
“Oh please Landen, he needs my help!” Elinore returned as she skipped in front of the vampire once more, “So is that a no on the coffee?”
“I would love some,” he replied, stepping into the house and watching as Gabe and Landen gave him a cautious stare, following him into the kitchen. Elinore was on the tips of her toes, reaching for a mug in the back of the cabinet before she poured the coffee into it. “Sugar? Milk?”
“No,” the vampire returned.
“Why are you here?” Gabe asked, sitting down across the vampire as Porter entered the room. The vampire cast him a weird look.
“I need Elinore to investigate something for me, and she can use it in her magazine because it has nothing to do with us,” the vampire mumbled.
“I'm sorry, what was your name again?” Elinore asked as she slid the mug in front of him. Sighing, he looked at her, “Thomas.”
“Hmm, thats not what I was expecting,” she grumbled as she leaned against the counter, folding her arms.
“Were you expecting Lestat?” Porter huffed out. Quietly, he watched the vampire take a sip.
“Anyways,” he muttered as he swallowed the amount he'd drank, “there's a ghost, its following around my fledgling, I need you to find out what it wants and then get it the hell away from him. Its making him lose his mind.”
“Aren't you a vampire? Can't you control or talk to it? You're sort a dead to,” she muttered curiously. Gabe chuckled shaking his head at her actions.
“My god Porter, how come you didn't call me here sooner,” he laughed out, “she's hilarious.”
Elinore glared at him, before looking to Thomas. He looked offended, “Girl, I don't know what stories you've read regarding us, but you've got some seriously false information. Just because I'm dead, doesn't mean I sleep in coffins, only drink blood, can turn into a bat, and can see the other dead. I don't know a werewolf or vampire simply by looking at it.”
Elinore looked a bit ashamed that she'd offended him, “My bad. Although, can't Landen tell if someones a vampire or werewolf?”
“We have increased senses, and vampires usually smell like dead, rotting corpses, and werewolves are scent marked with their pack,” Porter explained.
Elinore nodded once more, her understanding of these new creatures expanding. “The ghost, where did you pick it up at?” She asked, leaving the room for only a second before coming back in with her laptop.
“I was taking him out to the local restaurant, we do enjoy some food every so often, although it doesn't fill us it still tastes good,” he added the second part as a barb to her. She only nodded, “Name?”
“Well after the restaurant we followed a girl to her apartment, which we fed on her, don't worry she's still alive,” he added. He could see an idea popping into Elinore's head. Elinore nodded, “Alright, where's her apartment?”
“Timber Pines,” he murmured, “its about fifteen miles into the city.”
Porter cleared his throat, “How did you know where I lived?”
Thomas chuckled, shaking his head at the man, “My friend is a werewolf, when I told him I'd met up with Landen, and needed to find the girl he was with, he gave me the pack information. He did warn me, but because my fledgling is in danger I need to get help. I did go to her apartment first, it was ransacked, have you been there?”
Elinore gasped, her fingers stopping dancing across the keyboard. “M-My apartment? Someone broke into my apartment?”
Gabe stood up and nodded to Porter, “That's my que. I'll check it out.”
Elinore quietly shook head, “Don't want to know...”
Her fingers went back to typing, “Alright, so in that apartment, there were many heart attacks and two murders, also theres one suicide. I don't really know of any heart attack victims haunting anyone because those are usually better ways to die but I'll look into the other three.”
Thomas nodded, taking another sip of his coffee. “Who is after you?” He asked. Elinore didn't know if she felt comfortable saying it. The vampire seemed to read into her mind, “I was thinking, since you're helping me out, I could return the favor. Vampires have the ability to find needles in haystacks you know? Also, our human resources are a lot larger than werewolves thanks to those Twilight movies.”
Elinore let out a faked gag. Porter sighed, “It could be a good idea, but we'll wait to see how this investigation plays out.” Landen moved to look over her shoulder, “Need Devon here?”
“No,” she whispered as she looked into the murders. “What was the name of the girl?”
“No idea,” Thomas murmured.
Elinore turned around quickly, “You mean to tell me, you got into her apartment, sucked her blood with your buddy, and didn't even get her name?! Thats ruder then leaving after having sex!”
The three men gave her that look again. Without saying anything else, she turned back to her laptop. A newspaper archive was up. “She have dark hair and brown eyes, flat chested, manly shoulders?” She asked. Thomas gave a positive reply.
“Alright, the ghost might be her husband, ghosts do tend to stick around for a little bit after they die. He only died two months ago. Jeez, talk about a bad two months, your husband dies and then you get sucked by two vampires. Talk about bad luck,” she whispered.
“How do we get rid of him?” Thomas asked, almost excited he'd gotten information so fast.
“Well, depends, has he possessed your fake son, or is he just haunting your guy's house?” She repeated, taking her cell phone out of her pocket.
“No, just the house,” he returned. Nodding, she dialed a number before looking at Porter, “Am I allowed to leave the house to fix this problem?”
Porter shook his head. She growled at him, hanging up, “How am I going to get this in the magazine if I'm not there! No one else at the office does the field work that I do! This is a great story and I can't pass it up! Not when its real!” She shouted in anger.
“You'd rather stay alive, or get a story and possibly die!” Landen returned. She smacked her lips closed.
“I ask this again, who's after you?” Thomas repeated. Elinore gave in, “My father, a sexual predator turned into a werewolf who wants me to become his eternal wife. Fucked up I know, but now he's trying to take me into his pack.”
“Why don't you just scent mark her for the time being, he won't even realize she's out,” Thomas looked to Porter. Porter than looked to Landen, who then looked pissed off. “Do you even know how that works?”
Thomas shook her head and Elinore snorted, “Do you pee on me?”
When she got both werewolves looking at her angrily, she stopped laughing.
Landen sighed, figuring he would give her an answer, “Its spending about five hours with one of us, naked.”
Elinore blushed at the thought, but not out of innocence. She almost wanted to do it, just to see what Landen looked like underneath the shirt. “Wow,” Porter muttered, “thats a nice smell of arousal you got her to let out.”
Elinore gasped, before walking out of the room. They could smell that too? Landen followed her quickly, “I won't do it so don't get any ideas!” She turned on her heel, “Oh come on! Its not that big of a deal! One night naked!”
Landen glared at her, “I-it is a big deal. We have inner beasts! Do you know how hard it is to fight for control when you have a naked woman with that smell of arousal on her!? Its like taking X and fucked 'til you're about to cum!”
She looked like she was about to die of shock at the comparison. “Can we tie you up then?” She heard Porter begin to laugh from the kitchen. Even Thomas emitted a chuckle
Landen growled warningly at her.
“I won't do it,” he muttered.
“Fine! Then I'll find a werewolf who will, because I'm dying in this house! I've been cooped up in here for three weeks! You didn't tell me this handy dandy trick!” She shouted at him.
“Oh? If I told you sooner you would have done it!?” Landon returned. Elinore looked to the side as she debated it, finally cracking a smile.
“Spend a night, alone, with a naked man who probably looks sexy as hell, and then being able to leave this house for a day! Hell yea! That could be a really good time!” She shouted.
Landen growled, “You're not doing it! Not with me! Not with anyone!” He could feel his anger doubling at her face. The face of sheer anger.
“Don't even dare try to tell me what to do! I'm old enough to make my own decisions!” Her voice echoed through the living room. Landen kept his mouth tight, feeling his eyes go gold once more before she walked passed him into the kitchen. “Hey, its just the scent I'm rubbing off right? Can I do that with a human?”
“Sure, I suppose it'd work,” Porter returned. A new expression of relief and victory came into her eyes. “Where are you going?” Landen asked as she began dialing a number on her cell phone, jogging up the stairs.
“I'm calling Kenneth! We're going to sleep naked and then he's going to take me to Thomas's apartment and help me get rid of that ghost, and if you try to stop me I'll spray you with perfume! You won't be able to smell anything for months! I guarantee it!”
The cell phone was ripped from her hands, the next second it was shattered against the wall. Her body was pushed down the hallway into the bedroom. Her ankles cracking from the stretch as she tried not to fall at the sheer force he used to push her in. The door slammed shut and she instantly tried to open it. Only to find that it was jammed with something.
“You selfish asshole! This is not your decision! Let me out!” She screamed through the door. Landen calmly walked back downstairs, into the kitchen, where Thomas and Porter were looking at him with concern.
“I-It is her decision you know?” Porter asked. Thomas nodded, “I'd be antsy too if I was stuck in a house for three weeks.”
Landen growled before Porter grinned, “I'll just ask Gabe for another favor.” Landen's eyes widened the size of baseballs. “You wouldn't!”
Porter narrowed it eyes, “The human or Gabe, your choice. Unless you want to take it upon yourself? If you can do it with out losing control. You know Gabe wouldn't lose control, he might be the safest if not the human.”
Landen's nails gripped the edge of the kitchen counter. “Y-You agree with her? That she should spend five hours naked with someone just to get out of this house?”
“Wouldn't you?” Thomas asked.
Landen glared at him, but they could see the defeat on his face, “That's not the point!”
