Night was beginning to fall, but I still ran. I paid no mind to the pain in my lungs and sides. This was a small pain compared to the one in my heart. The pain there was nearly unbearable, but I with stood the pain.
I listened to see if the mob was still behind me, but all I heard was a rumble of thunder in the distance. A storm was coming and fast. I could smell it in the cool air. I had to find shelter, even if it was a small dark cave.
Then a small farmhouse came into view. The lights were on in every room, people were moving around and it looked like they were getting ready for dinner. The smell of what was cooking caught my nose. It was chicken, a nice roasted chicken.
My mouth watered, and I licked my lips. I felt like a dog, a begging dog. I felt weak and stupid. Not to mention helpless, but then again I needed food and somewhere to go, but I was a total mess.
I sighed. It was a now or never thing. What should I do?
I knocked on the front door lightly, holding kitty tightly in the other am. I hope that those people didn't follow Father Andrew; I prayed that they didn't. If they did I was so screwed.
“ Hello?” A woman in her early thirties answered. Her face went pale once she got a good look at me. “ Oh you poor thing! Get in here!”
“ Thank you.” I said even if I only half understood what she said.
“ Toboe get me some warm water and a wash cloth.” She shouted to a boy who was sitting on the couch watching TV in the living room. “ Toboe!” She growled when he didn't answer her.
“ Huh?” He looked at her. He was maybe a year older than me with shoulder length brown hair, and beautiful blue-gray eyes.
My heart skipped a beat when he looked at me. I suddenly couldn't breathe and there was an odd fluttering feeling in my stomach. I've never had a feeling like this before, and I didn't understand it either.
“ Get some warm water and a wash cloth, please.” She said. Now she was speaking all German.
Toboe nodded, getting up slowly and easily. He went up the stairs, I'm guessing to the bathroom.
Now that I started to calm, I took a look around. Their house was a good size, not to bit, not to small. There were many paintings on the walls of different things, but a lot of them were of naked people. I guess everyone has their own taste in art.
The walls in the kitchen were off white. The walls in the living room where blood red, the broads of the windows and door way were black. The carpet was black as well, compared to the gray title in the kitchen. I felt at ease here.
“ What is your name?” she asked me.
“ Liebe. My name is Liebe.” I smiled weakly at her.
“ Nice name. You can call me May or mom if you'd like.” She smiled back, but it was brighter than mine.
“ I'll just stick with calling you May.” I said holding onto kitty.
“ If you don't mind me asking. What happened to you? I hope that isn't your blood.” She had a concerned look as she looked over me.
“ It's not mine. It's Mother Laura and Sister Eva's blood.” I said with a shaking voice. I was trying not to lose it again.
“ Oh my! Father Andrew did it huh?” She wrapped her arms around my shoulders. “ He is a very cruel man. Just like my husband.”
“ What he did was wrong, and I'll kill him for it.” I growled feeling the power.
“ Don't live your life in hate. Your chance will come, but look past it for now.” She kissed my forehead, as Toboe came down from the bathroom.
He was carrying a bowl and rage with him. The odd feeling returned. My heart was pounding wildly, and my cheeks grew hot as I began to blush. I was trying to hide it the best I could.
“ Sit in one of those chains, please.” He said to me kindly, smirking slightly as if he knew. That I was having this odd feeling. It made me nervous.
“ S-sure.” I said, grabbing one o the chairs that were at the kitchen table, and sat in it.
“ Liebe, mind if I take kitty and wash him?” May asked with a warm smile.
“ Please.” I handed her kitty and she left to go into the basement. I guess that was where the washer and dryer were.
Toboe dunked the rag into the water and rung the water out so that the rag as only damp. Then she started to wash my face. His closeness causes my heart to race even faster.
He looked at me, and blinked. He looked a mix of worried and confused.
“ You okay?” he asked, letting the rag fall into the warm water. He touched my forehead with the back of his head. “ You don't have a fever. Did I do something wrong? If you'd like I'll leave you alone to wash your own face. I have a habit with being um….helpful.” He started worrying on the broader line panicking. He really thought he had done something wrong.
“ No, it's okay. I don't mind you doing that at all.” I said, getting up and touched his shoulder. That's when I noticed his breathing. It was very fast and short. “ Calm down, you're okay”
“ S-sorry. I guess I'm nervous or got spooked. I get a little worked up sometimes.” Toboe smiled nervously, sitting down on the floor. “ My father doesn't treat me well. I just hope he doesn't get home any time soon.”
“ Oh.” I said. “ Sorry.”
“ It's okay. Hey you see that green pill bottle on the counter by the stove? Can you get them for me?” He pointed and I saw what he was talking about.
I wondered what the pills were for as I picked up the bottle. The pills inside were so small and looked like they should b white. I didn't read the label, because I couldn't. It was in English.
“ Here.” I said as I handed him the bottle.
“ Thank you. Oh, your name is Liebe right? That's what my mom called you, so I kinda assumed.” He said holding the bottle tightly.
“ Yes.” I smiled. “ And yours is Toboe.”
“ Uh-huh, sure is.” He chuckled. “ I like that name Liebe. Means love.” He smiled sweetly at me.
“ Thank you.” I blushed again. Why was I having this feeling?
“ You sure you're okay? You sure are blushing a----- oh I get it.” He chuckled. “ You like me.” He found that funny.
“ L-like you?” I was a little confused. “ Like how? I mean I consider you a friend, but I've never had this feeling before…it's weird.”
“ It confuses you, because we're both guys, and it's against God?” Toboe asked there was a slight look of sadness in his blue-gray eyes.
“ It just confuses me period. It's new to me, ya know.” I smiled nervously. Did it mean I was gay?
Toboe nodded his head, and then said. “ I was like that too. Then I was like oh well I'm queer.”
“ Didn't people pick on you?” I asked. It was a question of curiosity.
“ Not really. Hey would you like to come to school with me tomorrow?” he smiled, I could see that he really wanted me to go.
“ But I can't speak English and Father Andrew is after me.” I couldn't help but whine. The thought of being seen my Father Andrew was hell.
“ I don't go to school in that town. I go to school in the next town over. No one will know you, and everyone speaks German.” Toboe smiled and was hugging me. “ Please come with me! I don't fell alone with you around. I feel normal!”
“ You've known me for whole half an hour.” I chuckled. No one could like someone that fast, but even again it took me 30 seconds.
“ So? Please!!”
“ Okay. What grade are you in?” I asked. I was thinking only first grade, since he looked six.
“ Second. I just turned seven.” He smiled.
“ But I can't pass for a seven year old.” I pouted. I was doomed. “ I'm only five.”
“ Well you sound smarter than most in my class. You'll be fine, trust me.” Toboe said with puppy dog eyes.
“ Alright.” I said. Toboe knew nothing about me, and I knew nothing about him, well not nothing. Just enough to wonder why we were instant friends, or really liked each other and just to scared to admit it.
I just hope that Toboe doesn't hate me once he finds out what I truly am.
