Here we stand the immortals who walk among you. It is with these words that I speak of a life that few will ever know. We were never truly human. We were never like you nor can we make others like us. We were created, true, but we cannot create. It is not for me to say how we came to be, but that is another tale. I will speak of the times that I know, the times of my own becoming.
Yes, I said `becoming'. We walk for the first of our years as mortal as those humans that command this world. It is, I suppose, the price we pay for the years we live later. I don't know this for fact, I only know what I know. There is not a book in which it is written. Our lives are kept out of the limelight, so to speak. If we become famous, then we must- most surely- die. It is something that we become good at. For one such as us, we cannot stay the same for so long without someone noticing.
It's not as easy as the books make it out to be. With the advent of technology, some of what must be done is easier. It did not however make foot work any less needed. We still must look into the dusty shelves of the ancient mausoleums for our next name and life. I, myself, have been more than thirty people who have barely lived and breathed the life they were born to. I am, however, more talented than most since I understand each new century that dawns without having to reveal myself.
That is until now.
