When I was in middle school, I came across something interesting while surfing the web for Inuyasha music. It was a link to a fanfiction story called “A Tale of Two Hanyous,” and there was a picture of the two main characters, Inuyasha and Kagome, holding hands. I was surprised when I discovered that it was a story based off the characters and settings of Inuyasha. Intrigued, I read six chapters (each about 20 typed pages long) in one night, falling into despair when I realized the author had not completed the story. For months, maybe even a year, I religiously checked for the new chapter, but none ever came. So, I started searching for other stories to read and discovered that I loved fanfiction as much as, if not more than, reading books. Since then, I have probably read more fanfiction than books. Alas, a good many of the earlier stories I read ended in dejection since they were incomplete and have not been updated since the time I first read them. Because of this, around my sophomore year I vowed to never begin reading something that wasn't completed.
The realm of fanfiction consists of stories that are written by fans that contain the characters, settings, and sometimes parts of the plot of another book/movie/etc. I mostly read Inuyasha fanfiction because of its wide range of characters and the limitless plot possibilities. Due to the repetitiveness of the show, and the fact that all 164 episodes are about killing a spider demon named Naraku, I rarely watch Inuyasha anymore. The reason Inuyasha fanfiction continues to intrigue me is there is normally an alternate villain. However, it is practically impossible to find good fanfiction that has an original plot. Many fanfiction writers use the same plotline for numerous stories which makes them dull and unappealing.
