Mile Walk

Summer was ending. Soon and Jin were getting closer. However, there was still Be to deal with. They weren't awkward. It was just…

“I'm sorry, but have I offended you somehow?” Soon asked. Be tilted her head.

“No,” she said. “Why do you ask?” Soon shrugged and shook his head.

“No reason,” he said. That's as far as their conversations went. Soon didn't know what he was doing.

“Mai-Pai,” he said.

“Hm?” she asked. The man leaned forward over the dining room table.

“Does Be hate me?” he asked. Mai-Pai shook her head.

“I don't think so,” she said. “Why do you ask?” Soon shrugged and shook his head.

“I can't explain it,” he said. “It's just…” Soon thought about it but nothing came to mind. Mai-Pai gave him a sympathetic smile as she walked over to the table.

“It's okay,” she said. “Be's always been very protective of me. I haven't been dating since my husband died. It's a bit off-putting to her.” Soon frowned.

That wasn't good enough.

Maybe a little drive would help. Jin is down with it. But Be? Soon held his breath.

“Hey, Be,” he said this morning. The young woman turned her head.

“Hm?” she asked. Soon stood up straighter.

“Are you busy today?” he asked. Be tilted her head.

“No,” she said. “Why do you ask?”

“Do you want to go for a drive in the country?” he asked. “Jin's going too.”

“What about mom?” she asked.

“It's just us,” Soon said. He waited with bated breath. Be shrugged her shoulders.

“Sure,” she said. Soon about stumbled backwards.

“Oh. Okay then,” he said. “Uh… Um…” Be narrowed her eyes.

“Are you feeling okay?” she asked.

“Sure!” Soon was quick to say. “Everything is fine. Yeah Right. Of course.” He turned and walked down the hall. He nervously laughed the whole time. Be stood there blinking.

---------

Mai-Pai let them use her car. Soon sat in the driver's side. Jin was already in the back seat. Neither one spoke. Soon thought of something to say but nothing came out. He gave up in the end. He looked up when they heard the front door open. Be stood on the front steps. She walked up to her mom's car.

“Ready to go?” Soon asked.

“Uh-huh,” Be said. She walked up to the passenger side door and opened it. Once she got in, Soon pulled out of the driveway and drove off.

The drive was silent at first. A sweat drop formed on Soon's head. I can't connect with them. He sighed and stared at the road.

“Soon-san,” Be spoke up. The man glanced over at her.

“Yeah?” he asked.

“Are you dating our mom?” she asked. Soon took a moment to think.

“No,” he said.

“Do you like her?” Be asked. Soon's face turned red. He mumbled something under his breath.

“What?” she asked. He was about to speak when the car loudly sputtered.

“Huh?” Soon asked. The car came to a stop. Soon had a confused look on his face.

“Oh…” he said. The man turned his head.

“Anyone have their phones?” he asked. Jin pulled out his phone.

“No service,” he said. Soon turned to Be.

“What about you?” he asked. She pulled out her phone and shook her head. The man dropped his head and sighed.

“Well, looks like we're going to have to get out and find a service station for help,” he said. Be and Jin stared at him.

“You can't be serious!” Be said. The man shrugged.

“What choice do we have?” he asked. “We can't call anyone. Besides, it doesn't look too long. If we go now, we can make it back home before sundown.” Be and Jin didn't look so convinced. Soon got out of the car and started walking.

“Hey!” Jin shouted. Soon turned his head.

“Are you coming?” he asked. The boy quickly opened the car door and jumped out.

“Jin?” his sister asked. He followed after Soon. Be sighed and got out of the car.

----------

The walk was just as silent as the car ride. Soon shoved his hands into his pockets.

“Yes,” he mumbled. Be looked up.

“What?” she asked. The man turned his head.

“Yes,” he said again. “I don't like your mother.” Be didn't respond. She gave him a small nod.

“Please take good care of her,” she said. Jin looked confused.

“Of course,” Soon said. He bowed his head. Jin still couldn't grasp what was going on.

“What are you guys talking about?” he asked.

“We'll talk when we get to a service station,” Soon said. Jin frowned at him.

“Okay, I like your mom,” he said.

“Does she like you too?” the boy asked.

“I don't know,” Soon said.
