Cat Demon
-Christmas Eve-
Christmas had never been Be's thing. Most of her peers already had
dates. It was always look after her widowed mother. This year would
be different.
“I'm leaving!” Be said.
“Don't stay out too late!” Mai-Pai said.
“Okay,” her daughter said. Be headed out the door.
Her club was having a Christmas party. The leader insisted that
everyone shows up. Be didn't complain. Her mom wasn't lonely this
year. Maybe she could enjoy herself. Her friends were surprised to
see her.
“You made it!” Yuuko said with a gasp. Be pressed her lips together
and nodded.
“Yeah,” she said. “I'm here. Yep.” The club leader clapped her
hands together.
“Okay! We're all here now! Let's enjoy the night, shall we?” she
said. The other girls cheered. Be made herself smile.
The party was surprisingly modest. Not many students showed up. Be
was fine with that. She got herself a drink and hung out in the
corner. The girl watched everyone else talk and drink. Some of the
girls brought their boyfriends. Her mind went back to Soon. What a
strange man. He just showed up in their lives over the summer and
now he was family. It felt crazy.
But he was kind of cute. He looked better cleaned up. Be did have
her doubts at first. But now…
Be giggles to herself. She covered her mouth. She quickly looked
around. No one seemed to notice her. Good. Be went back to her
thoughts. Soon looked better with a smile on his face. Funny, she
had never heard him laugh. It took months for him to mile. He was
adjusting to his new life rather well.
“He's kind of cute,” Be said to herself.
“Why thank you,” a voice said. Be jumped and turned around. A man
about her age stood with a drink in his hand. Be blinked.
“Can I help you?” she asked. His smile already annoyed her.
“You said I was cute,” the boy said. Be shook her head.
“No, I didn't,” she said.
“Yes, you did,” he said. “You said, `he's kind of cute'.” Be
blinked before shaking her head.
“No,” she said. “I wasn't talking about you.” The boy pouted.
“Aw,” he said. “I thought that was meant for me.”
“No,” Be said.
“Hey!” someone yelled. Be and the boy looked up. Yuuko ran over to
them with an empty cup in hand.
“Hey there,” she said. “I was looking for you.” She put her hand on
Be's shoulder.
“Uh, yeah, yeah, yeah,” she said. “Of course.”
“Sorry, Saitou,” Yuuko said. “But I need to borrow Be for a
moment.” She walked Be away as fast as she could. Saitou
frowned.
“Okay then. Bye…” he said.
Yuuko pulled Be away with her as she looked over her shoulder.
“What's going on?” Be asked. Her friend stopped in another corner.
Yuuko took one more look at Saitou before turning back to Be.
“You'll went to steer clear of him,” she said.
“Huh?” Be asked.
“That's Saitou Hindeo,” Yuuko said. “He's quite the playboy. You're
better off not getting involved with him.” Be looked over at
Hindeo. He watched with a frown on his face.
“Thanks for telling me,” she said. “I don't intend to.” Funny, she
said that, but she didn't sound too convincing. Be and Hindeo kept
staring at each other from across the room.
