Kazuyuki

In some distant past there existed a country called Morinaka and in this country a village called Fuuta. In the village of Fuuta there lived a boy named Kazuyuki. Now one thing you should know about Morinaka is that when people there turned fifteen they were paired up with a Shikigami. A Shikigami is kind of like a person's familiar, except these Shikigami have a human form as well as there true form. This story is about Kazuyuki, his Shikigami and the adventures they share…

Chapter 1
“A Boy without a Partner”

You could say that Kazuyuki was an average fifteen year-old boy. He was 5'2”, with spiky sandy-brown hair, and had a crush on a girl like any other boy of his age. But by the standards of Morinaka he was considered quite unusual. The reason behind this was that, though he had turned fifteen, no Shikigami had come to him. Though this wasn't unheard of, the people of Fuuta considered it a deep shame for one of their members not to be blessed with a Shikigami partner. It was especially hard for Kazuyuki. He not only had to deal with the other residents of Fuuta but he was also the youngest of four siblings, all with a Shikigami of their own.
One morning, he went to his eldest brother's Shikigami,
“Kane, do Shikigami ever come later then a person's fifteenth birthday?”
Kane studied Kazuyuki carefully. Even Mine his sister's Shikigami stopped in the process of setting the table for breakfast; she gave Kazuyuki a worried glance. Kane stayed silent so long that Kazuyuki thought that he wasn't going to answer his question; then Kane cleared his throat and finally spoke.
“It is unlikely, but there is at least one case where a Shikigami did come later then the designated fifteen year mark…”
Kazuyuki perked up at this information.
“Really?! Then it's still possible for me to get a Shikigami! Thanks Kane!”
He then ran out the door without a care for breakfast.
Mine waited to make sure that Kazuyuki was really gone before turning on Kane, glaring at him.
“How could you give him false hope like that?!”
Kane merely looked back unaffected by her anger.
“I was just being honest with him. You must admit that it is strange that a boy born to a well-known family with a long history of Shikigami partners ends up without one on his fifteenth birthday.”
“Of course it's strange. But that boy has enough problems right now as it is without you telling him he's still got a chance.”
“Come now Mine, you must have seen the signs.”
“But that was a thousand years ago. It can't be happening again…”
“We never knew for sure what really happened that night. For all we know, the curse could have failed on both ends. All I'm saying is that the signs are pointed in that direction.”
“Well let's hope not…I don't know about you but I'd rather not face that monster again…”
Kane made no reply but looked out the window in thoughtful silence.
Meanwhile, Kazuyuki had gone to his favorite spot in the forest that surrounded the village. He was sitting on top of a branch of his favorite tree, listening to the soothing sounds of a small waterfall that flowed nearby. His mind still raced with the words Kane had said to him, when his thoughts were very rudely interrupted.
“Hey freak! Get down here”
“Oh stop calling him that, Sano…” said an exasperated girl's voice.
Hearing the girl's voice made Kazuyuki's spirits drop even more then the first. `Why is Kana always with that jerk?' went through his mind. Kana was of course the girl he had a crush on, but he knew that he never had much of a chance with her.
“What do you want Sanosuke?” He asked in a bored sounding voice. He was well use to Sanosuke's antics.
Without warning he was knocked unceremoniously out of the tree and landed on the ground with a dull thud. He looked up, eyes watering, and saw that it was Sanosuke's Shikigami that had pushed him off.
“Sano! You're not supposed to use your Shikigami like that!” Kana said in a reproachful voice, “and besides, you could have seriously hurt him.”
“Who cares.” Sanosuke replied back. Hen then proceeded to pick Kazuyuki up by his shirt.
“The people of this village may put up with a Shikigami-less freak like you because of your family, but I won't!”
Sanosuke pulled his fist back and Kazuyuki shut his eyes and prepared himself for the punch he knew was coming…, but it never came. The next thing he knew Sanosuke was lying limp against the opposite tree and a girl floating at least a foot from the ground was in front of him. She turned towards him and he noticed that she was dressed in traditional Shikigami formal garb.
She smiled at him and said, “What took you so long to call me?”
