The walk toward the next village was very calm and soothing. Scarlet and Elaina were talking like they had been friends their whole lives, and Lathanos and Sobasa were comparing weapons.
Romona glanced at them all with a fond smile, when suddenly she felt something, or someone, lifting up her shirt. Sobasa, who was standing behind her, was proceeding in the process of taking her shirt off. Realizing he had been caught, Sobasa ran as Romona followed close behind. Elaina and Scarlet ran to keep up, while a confused Lathanos watched from a distance.
When Lathanos finally caught up, Romona was sitting on one side of the path, hugging her knees to her chest; Sobasa was on the other side allowing Scarlet to put powder on the halfway formed bruises on his arms and chest. Romona at least didn't go as low as to hit him in other places. Elaina appeared behind her and helped her to her feet, laughing hysterically. Lathanos, however, was the first to notice the small village about a fourth of a mile ahead of them.
It had seemed that ever since they had started this mission, they had visited countless villages. Each had had a name, but it didn't matter, for soon this would end. Giving Romona a quick glance, Lathanos thought of the Elven cities, if they could just get their help; Romona could get them to, he knew she could. Turning to go, the group headed onward with a newfound happiness that came from their companionship and their formed friendship.
The village, the group noticed, was bigger than they had supposed it would be, with a large and lousy marketplace. Ladies and gentlemen wandered the streets, making their own torn clothes look pitiful. Finally, they noticed the white, jutting castle in the background.
They were all pushed aside, however, as a wild carriage flew through the streets. Romona, having been on the other side, suffered a bad fall, and at that, the carriage stopped. A boy of about 15 or 16 stepped out of it. He had electric blue eyes and a nose that made him look like a hawk. Black hair surrounded his rugged face as he helped Romona to her feet.
Hand on her head, Romona got up as Sobasa walked over, muttering, “You alright?” His voice, however, was mixed with the boy's, who had a sweet, angelic baritone.
Nodding, Romona replied, “Just peachy,”
Lathanos moved forward and, giving the boy a momentary glance, ushered everyone away. The boy stared transfixed as the group moved off, as he had never seen an elf before, especially one with wings, which had fallen out of Romona's cloak for a mere fraction of a second. That fraction was just enough to convince the boy that she was an angel.
Finally getting to a decent tavern, Lathanos finally broke the silence, “Well, that was an interesting entrance,”
Everyone laughed except Scarlet, who said, “Did you see the way they looked at us?! Just because we didn't look and dress like them…” Her voice trailed off as she continued to mumble to herself.
Sobasa was the first to speak after that, “We do need new clothes…”
After eating a meek dinner at the tavern, Lathanos and Sobasa disappeared while the girls went shopping. They didn't buy much, just a ninja outfit for Sobasa and the same for Lathanos. Both outfits consisted of a fishnet shirt with short sleeves, baggy hakama pants, a simple obi, two-toed socks, and straw sandals. Lathanos's outfit was black with a crimson obi; Sobasa's was navy blue with a dark green obi.
Scarlet had found a wonderful dress with slits on the sides for movement, which Elaina immediately copied. Scarlet's was red, and Elaina's was a bright royal purple. Romona had trouble finding something that would suit her; she finally settled for a long pair of grey pants and a black shirt with a low neck.
Leaving Lathanos and Sobasa's clothes in their rooms, they had since fallen asleep in their own, only to be awakened by Lathanos and being told they had to leave. The sun had barely risen in the sky as they swept through the outskirts and out onto the land outside the city walls.
“Man, yet another boring trek to the next village,” Lathanos mumbled. “I mean, there's supposed to be a war going on!”
Suddenly, a figure in an all black ninja uniform appeared before them. His eyes were glowing a deep blue. He had two samurai swords crisscrossing on his back. “Hello, Lathanos!” The figure said coldly.
“Well, you seem to already know my name! So, who in the hell are you?!” Lathanos shouted angrily.
“My name is Haldamir! It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Lathanos!” The man cackled.
Lathanos gripped the hilt of his sword tightly. `Who is this guy? Why couldn't I sense his spirit until now?!' He thought.
“Shall we begin?” asked Haldamir, crouching low and gripping the hilt of one of his swords.
“Yes, let's begin!” Lathanos shouted, charging toward Haldamir. When he neared him, Lathanos unsheathed his emerald sword, then swung forward. Not even a second before Lathanos's sword struck Haldamir, he leapt into the air. Lathanos gasped. “T-there's no way! No one could be that fast!!” Lathanos exclaimed.
“Is that your fastest?! Hah! You'll have to be quicker than that to beat me!” Haldamir laughed as he landed a few feet from Lathanos. He unsheathed one of his swords and charged. Lathanos was just barely able to get his sword up to block with Haldamir's speed being so immense.
“Damnit! I'm just barely able to keep up with you!” Lathanos shouted angrily. He pushed off of Haldamir's sword, raising his own as he moved back. Haldamir did the same. They charged, their swords flying forward. As their swords connected, a clanging sound could be heard all around. Blow after blow after blow was delivered, yet neither Lathanos nor Haldamir could land a hit on the other.
As Haldamir prepared to once again swing his sword, Lathanos moved to the side. He couldn't hear the wind; he couldn't hear the steel clanging against steel of their swords; he couldn't even hear the cheers and screams of his friends. All he could hear was the loud beating of his own heart within his chest; he was surprised that no one could hear it. This was the heat of battle that Lathanos had come to love. This was what Lathanos loved most in life…or at least, that's what he thought.
As he moved to the side, Haldamir reached for his other sowrd and unsheathed it, swinging it at Lathanos. Lathanos ducked and prepared to strike. “You may be fast, but not fast enough,” Haldamir muttered. Haldamir swung both swords at Lathanos. Thinking quickly, Lathanos disappeared. “What the?! Damnit! Where did he go?!” Haldamir growled angrily, looking around frantically.
Lathanos reappeared above Haldamir. “I'm right here!” He shouted, grinning.
“Damn you, Lathanos!” Haldamir shouted. Lathanos's sword came down hard on his forehead, blood spurting from it in a crimson stream. Haldamir stumbled back, gripping his head in agony. “Damnit! You will pay for that, Lathanos!!” Haldamir slowly lowered his hands from his face. His face had a deep cut down the center of it, and his palms were stained red. He was shaking with fury.
He sheathed one of his swords and readied the other. He then charged furiously. Before Lathanos could retaliate, Haldamir thrust his sword straight through his gut. Lathanos winced in pain, still gripping his sword tightly.
Suddenly, Lathanos's eyes flashed open, burning with rage. He gripped Haldamir's sword blade and pulled it out of himself. Haldamir was stunned. Lathanos then moved to the side of it, and with a swift strike, slashed across Haldamir's chest. Haldamir fell backwards, blood gushing from the wound, the light leaving his eyes. “Well…shall we continue?” asked Lathanos.
“Hold on…” Romona's voice rang out as she walked forward. Reaching out slowly, he hands glowed a soft blue. As they touched Lathanos's stomach, the wound healed. The tissue seemed to grow across, leaving no scar; even his shirt had closed up.
