Sekre, Maddie, Kelli – Thanks a lot guys. ^^ It’s nice to hear someone likes my writing style.
Katsu – If this is the Katsu I think it is, I love you. :o
reemysin – I know, it’s supposed to be Lo Engaño, but I couldn’t figure out how to put in symbols. As for the idea that Dai leaves him alone at the house, I’ll explain that in better detail later on because of you. xD –nod-
Chapter 2: Anticipación
Dai’s eyes were still wide as they could ever be, pale fingers curling around the phone as he shook his head. “Marcus, what the hell are you calling so late for? Where are you?!” He whispered in a hushed tone, as to not alert Ryder. He knew the child would immediately run into the kitchen and start screaming “Da Da!” As loud as he could. Despite Dai’s current disliking for the man, Ryder was an innocent child and could not become hateful at such an age.
A scoff came from the other line. “I’m coming home from work.” He informed simply. “Nice to know you’re oh-so-happy to see me when I get there.” He informed with a tone that simply dripped with sarcasm and malice.
Dai’s eyebrows furrowed gently as he sighed and shook his head. “Fine.” He informed simply. It felt like talking to a wall when he conversed with Marcus. God knew the man was emotionless enough from having to take care of a small son and Dai, who barely ever wanted his attention, only wanted to be recognized. Even with that small want of attention, he rarely ever got it.
”Want anything to eat while I’m in town?” He inquired with a bored tone, the sound of rain heavy over the other end of the line. Dai didn’t bother to go check if it was actually raining. It wasn’t what he had planned to do.
”No. Just get something and come home, I guess.” He stated simply, shaking his head. “See you when you get here.” He muttered, hanging up and pressing a hand over his forehead. Counselors hadn’t worked, and neither had talking as they liked to call it. Marcus had only become bored and gone off to take a shower or something of the sort. Nothing Dai did could work.
”Excuse me, Mr. Lihve.” A voice came from the kitchen doorway.
Dai jumped with a startled look on his face, whirling around and letting out a breath of relief at the sight of a man dressed in a butler’s uniform. “Antonio, you startled me.” He pressed his hand closer to his forehead, already feeling a migraine coming on. But that wasn’t that much of a surprise was it? With all the stress he was going through, it was amazing he had any time to himself.
”Forgive me, sir.” The man grinned. Antonio was only in his fifties or so, and his hair was lightly receding but not enough to be noticeable. A cane was gripped in his right hand, tapping lightly upon the floor. No, not blind, though he needed it to walk. If Dai could recall, the man had been some old time war veteran for the Vietnam War. At least that was what he told them when he applied for the job. So while Dai and Marcus were gone (Dai at college, Marcus at work), the man took care of Ryder.
It was bad for Ryder to see Antonio as a father or a mother, but Dai couldn’t help it. Going to college and coming home when his child was taking his nap was heartbreaking in itself, but who could help it? “Don’t worry about it.” Dai waved his hand away. “How’s Ryder been today?” He inquired softly, mixing the milk and cocoa together, humming a quiet lullaby. Nostalgic from when Ryder was just an infant and he would wake up, crying as loudly as he could.
Back then when Dai would rock him and Marcus would stand over them, crooning to the sobbing child as well. Back when things were happy. Dai’s eyes hazed over once before he wiped at his cheeks.
Antonio only smiled, tapping the cane periodically on the floor while he moved to the refrigerator, taking the large jug of water out. “He’s been fine, sir. During lunch he was trying to say your name and Mr. Hayden’s as well.” He replied, looking up when a moment of silence filled the room. “Mr. Lihve?”
Dai lifted his head and smiled weakly. “Sorry.” He whispered, shaking his head. “Is that so? Well, he’s getting smarter every day, isn’t he?” He questioned, laughing quietly and bowing his head. Ryder grew up far too fast and Dai was missing all of it. Marcus was as well, so how different were they from businessmen and businesswomen that left their children alone with thousands of toys, just to think they were happy?
”You can take the day off tomorrow, Antonio.” He finally stated, resting his hands upon the counter. “I’m going to stay home and spend the day with Ryder.” He replied, looking over. “And Marcus if he’s willing to stay home and if not spend time with me, then at least spend time with his son.” He gazed down into the mixture in the pot, sighing quietly.
”Ma Ma?” Ryder smiled softly, hugging a teddy bear to his chest. The bear seemed even bigger than the small toddler, which brought an adorable scene that melted Dai’s heart.
”What is it, sweetie?” He bent down, stroking his hair and bringing him close, wrapping the child tightly in his slender arms and scooping him up. “Your hot chocolate’s almost done, so just wai—“
”I wuv you.” The child stated happily, smiling up to Dai, hugging his neck. Ryder wasn’t stupid, he knew that Dai was going through a lot and he wanted to try to comfort the older male as much as possible.
”Oh, sweetie… you have no idea how much I needed to hear that.” He whispered into his hair.
Happiness was evident between the two. A sharp rap upon the door made Dai jump a bit, gazing towards it and sighing.
”Your Daddy’s home.”
