Chapter 5: Terror (Dread)

The sound of a ringing alarm woke Dai from his sleep, the sunlight pouring into the room from the blinds that were above his bed. The covers were strewn about to his side, signifying that Marcus had left. Again. “What a surprise.” He muttered, sitting up carefully and brushing his fingers over his bare hip, shaking his head. His slender frame stood up, bathed in sunlight. “Mmm…” He stretched his body out slowly. His naked frame was truly a sight to behold, childbearing hips that had only experienced such a situation once. His hand rested lightly upon his stomach, looking down and tracing his finger gently over the vertical scar that ran down from the bottom of his chest, and down to his waistline.

It brought back memories indeed. Memories of being treated so perfectly by Marcus. The older man was very protective when he had been pregnant. Making him surprise dinners, rubbing his swollen ankles, kissing all the spots that were sore. Hell, the man had even laid his head in his lap one night, gently whispering to his swollen stomach. And the growing child inside. No wonder Ryder was so close to the man. Dai let out a soft sigh as he smiled to himself. Such memories were only a one time thing, he figured.

A sudden cry jolted him from his reminiscence, tightening a towel around his hips and moving into his son’s room. Ryder was standing up on his feet, clutching his teddy bear in one arm (which had an ear that was absolutely dripping with drool, the child having a fascination to chew on it whenever necessary), and his bright blue blanket in the other. Tears stained his face, quite scared from a nightmare.

”Awh, sweetie…” The male whispered, gently scooping him up and tickling his tummy. “Don’t cry.” He smiled, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “What’s wrong? Miss Daddy?” He inquired, stroking the child’s hair comfortingly and humming a soft tune to him while he headed out. When he arrived downstairs, he gently set the child in the highchair, Ryder quickly bouncing and playing with his teddybear, banging it on the highchair and laughing in glee.

Antonio was downstairs as well, washing dishes and cleaning the countertops. “Ah, g’morning to you, Mr. Lihve. And little Ryder.” He smiled, the child waving happily and smiling as brightly as any two-year-old could.

”I’ll make breakfast.” Dai nodded his head, moving to the toaster. He popped in two pieces of bread to make toast for himself, getting out some cereal for Ryder to eat.

”Oh, Mr. Lihve. Sir Marcus called this morning while you and little Ryder were sleeping.” Antonio smiled, blinking when Dai froze in place. “He said he had to go into work early and he’d be home late. Something about a big case with a child abduction.” The old man nodded.

Dai remained quiet for a moment and sighed, nodding. “Thank you, Antonio.” He smiled weakly and turned to Ryder, setting the cereal bowl down on the highchair top. Ryder dug his tiny hand into the food since there was no milk, practically stuffing his hand into his mouth to eat the cereal, looking up innocently.

Dai only laughed and pet his hair. “Now don’t make a mess.” He smiled, jumping when the toast popped up out of the toaster. Dammit, that would always scare him. He moved over and took both pieces from the device, placing them on a small plate.

After buttering and putting jelly upon the toast, he ate quietly, taking a seat and wincing. It occurred to him it’d hurt a bit from the rough pounding he had received from Marcus the night before, and his hips were a bit sore from scratches and cuts along them. Marcus was indeed rough when it came to making love.

Antonio blinked as he raised his head, hearing the phone ringing against the wall. He looked at the male and his son, smiling softly while he moved over and took it into his hand. “Hayden residence. How may I help you?” He questioned softly, blinking and widening his eyes.

”M-Mr. Lihve…” He looked over, offering the phone and frowning. He moved over to Ryder and gently picked him out of his highchair, gazing at Dai. Said male blinked in confusion, moving over and frowning. He took a hold of the ebony phone, placing it against his ear. “… Dai speaking. Who is this?”

”Dai Lihve? This is Lorenzo Accata. A friend of Marcus’s. From the station.” He explained quickly, like something else was beneath his word.

”Yes…?” Dai frowned. “Is something wrong with Marcus?”

There was silence at the end of the phone.

”Marcus is in the hospital.” His voice sent dread down Dai’s spine.
