The very air around the castle was dark and it exhaled the sickening stench of death and alcohol. It was cheap alcohol too. Why did it have to be beer? Lee covered his nose in disgust as he kept a close eye on Ryo. Ryo rode a few lengths ahead of the others, tightly holding the reins that directed Blackvelvet on which course to take. He glanced sideways at Lyre whose ears were twitching intently as he listened for any sound of hostility then glanced at Eldina, carefully gauging the human's emotions. He wasn't trying to belittle the human; it was just that Eldinia was a liability and that was something that had to be kept in mind. He heard the soft jingle of armor from Asilia's horse and frowned. Was Asilia approaching him to tell him something he didn't want to hear?

"Keep your eyes open, will you?" Ryo asked and Lee turned his attention to him. "You'd better keep quiet, Asilia."

"I am merely observing," Asilia replied. "I have nothing to say that will make you change your mind about this, I realize that."

"Good. Lee, would you stop looking at me that way?"

"I'm sorry honey. I didn't mean to upset you," Lee said then slowed his horse when he saw Ryo's tail arch up.

"You didn't upset me. Don't treat me like an infant, Lee."

"I wasn't trying to."

"Stop right now. I'm not putting up with it."

"I wasn't starting anything."

"Lee..."

"Why don't you just give up? He's never going to shut up," Eldinia said and Ryo pulled Blackvelvet to a halt. He ignored the eyes watching him as he dismounted and walked over to where Eldinia sat mounted on his horse. His eyes were a frozen emerald as he stared at the human. Lee felt the air around them change and shook his head. He knew that any slight provocation would push him further towards the edge and Lee wanted to hold onto his lover for as long as he could. Asilia folded his arms and shook his head. He wanted to avoid a heavy involvement in the upcoming battle at all costs, but it was becoming increasingly evident that his hopes and reality would not entwine.

"Dad, don't do this," Lyre said but Ryo disregarded him.

"Damn," Lee muttured and Lyre looked at him.

"what's the matter?"

"He's completely snapped this time. Don't talk to him and stay away from him for your own safety. I'm the only one that can somewhat reach him."

"Somewhat? Boy that's reassuring Lee."

"Don't joke about this. You've never seen him like this. I have. This is the side of your father that I hope you don't have."

"I feel sorry for the guy. He looks so terrified."

"Let's just hope that he doesn't access his brutal nature. If he does, that human is in trouble."

"Your flesh reflects his nature, doesn't it?"

Lee said nothing as he ran a hand over his scarred skin. He folded his wings in close to his body and lowered his head.

"It's...the way he is. I can't help it," Lee replied. "Besides, the cuts are never that deep. He would never deliberatly injure me."

"But doesn't it hurt you?"

"Half the time he doesn't mean to hurt me and he gets extremely upset when he hurts me badly. Ryo gets very emotional. You just don't see it. He doesn't like people to see him that way."

"He prefers people to see him as a monster?"

"Lyre!"

"I'm sorry. I don't understand why he wants people to fear him. Isn't he the one giving us all a bad name?"

Lee hit his son as hard as he could and Lyre laid a hand on his bleeding cheek. He gazed up at Lee and Lee coldly returned the gaze. Asilia sat silently on his horse as he watched the scene that played out before him. It seemed so strange to see Lee enraged. He had become so used to Lee's oversexed nature that he had quite forgotten the other facets of Lee's personality.

"You bastard," Lee hissed, the anger within him growing. "You damned bastard! How DARE you forget everything that he's done? You don't know what he went through to bring peace back to our people and you sure as hell don't know what he went through to bring you into the world. Ryo honey, where are you going?"

"Thank god I'm still alive," Eldinia gasped as Lyre picked himself up off the ground. Ryo stared at the castle in the distance for a moment as Lee walked up beside him.

"Ryoshan, where are you going?"

Ryo said nothing as he drew his weapon. Lee's eyes grew wide as he laid a hand on Ryo's arm. Ryo brushed him away brutally and Lee brought a hand to his injured arm. He had fallen on a jagged rock, which had mercilessly bore into his skin. He licked the blood off his fingers as he watched Ryo with tears in his eyes.

"You fucking bastard! You're going to go after him alone, aren't you?"

Ryo said nothing as he continued to move towards the castle. Lee ran after him and yanked hard on his tail. Ryo turned around in rage as the trees closest to him burst into flame. He placed his blade against Lee's neck and pressed it into his skin.

"Let go of me. NOW," Ryo hissed and Lee did as he was told. There was something in his voice that Lee paid heed to. He was further gone this time than he was the time before.

"Bastard," Lee muttered as he tried to keep himself from crying. He mounted Oceanblaze and followed Ryo. "You may not be able to see me right now but I still love you and I will do everything I can to keep you alive."

"Is he insane?!" Eldinia exclaimed as he watched Lee ride off. "That demon could have killed him."

"No. My father would never murder Lee. Lee had every right to strike me. I've forgotten a lot of things that my father has done. The one thing that reaches to him through the darkness is their love for each other" Lyre said as he gingerly laid a hand on the side of his face that Lee had struck.

"I don't know. From what I've seen of your dad, he's nuts."

Lyre grimly smiled as he picked up his weapon. He would never understand human logic. Human minds took too many other things into consideration. They didn't lay things out neat and succint like a demon's mind. Of course, there were a few exceptions to the rule. Lee was one of then, Lyre noted as he mounted Shadow. He coaxed the horse to a trot and set off in the direction that his parents had previously gone.

"Let's just hope that your dad has what it takes to kill the thing that's been tormenting all of us," Eldinia commented.

"If my father has to go down fighting, then I have to be there to take over."

"I thought you didn't want to take over."

"I'll take over the battle, of course. I don't want to take over his title. Come on. Let's get going before the gap between us gets too wide."

"I sincerely hope that your father fights with some rationality within his head. The stories I had heard about Shorel's bloodlust seemed to be just a myth to me. But perhaps his rage does not come from the mythical bloodlust. Perhaps it comes from the forbidden text that he has read. There was a reason why my ancestors took the books they had found and sealed them away," Asilia said and Lyre looked at him.

"How are you able to do that?" he inquired. "Ever since I've been little, you've had the ability to meld with the shadows."

"It's an ability I picked up while living in the north. Now let's hurry and catch up with his highness."

Illexi an stood up and stretched. He picked up his weapon and narrowed his eyes. He was finally coming. He had survived his injury and he was coming. Illexian would be ready for him. He drummed his long nails against the top of his chair as an attendant polished his sword.

"Enough," Illexian hissed. "This blade does not need to be perfect for it will soon be covered in blood."

He sheathed his weapon and gazed at the attendant. The attendant moved slightly out of Illexian's path and gazed nervously upon his master. He did not want to get the brunt of Illexian's wrath.

"Prepare my horse. The time for the final battle is at hand. I must not keep my opponent waiting. Especially not for his death."

The attendant grinned widely at his master's desire then yelped sharply when the blunt of Illexian's sword rapped him across the head. He winced in pain and sighed. He hated being his master's punching bag.

"Did I not give you a task to undertake? Stop standing like a fool and do it."
