Episode 4~ "Sheltered"
Ophelia looked up to see a figure moving into the room. It was none other than her close friend Monet, and she seemed to have a tray in her hands. Gauge could obviously smell something tasty, and it looked as though the doctor had brought him his dinner. Gauge's ruby eyes glistened and his stomach growled at the same time.

"Gauge, this is Dr. Monet-- she is the one that saved your life" Ophelia smiled shyly.

Monet grinned to him. "Hey there, Gauge, it's good to see you're finally awake. The antibiotic has really done a number on that infection of yours, hasn't it?" She placed the tray down on his bedside table, and walked over to check his IV. Gauge's eyes followed the newcomer, unaware of who she was. "I'll have to start you on more fluids-- this one is almost empty. I also brought you something to eat. Maybe you can explain to me why you haven't had anything to eat in five days?"

Ophelia's eyes widened when she heard Monet's words. Was it really true Gauge hadn't eaten in so long? She hoped it was the sickness that made him like this, but realized he wasn't even eating before then. What was going on with him?

"I... just haven't wanted to eat anything really. I'm hungry now though..." His voice was still a little weak, but was growing stronger by the minute. The aroma of whatever was underneath that cover quickly changed his mind and he was ready to eat.

"You're dangerously thin. That could be because of the weapon, though, it must take a lot out of you. I bet when you DO eat, you eat a LOT don't you?" Monet smiled and laughed at the same time, but just as Gauge reached for the food, Monet pulled it away. "Nope! Not until you do something for me and Ophelia."

After shining a light into Gauge's eyes, Monet could see that his left eye was in fact blind. She wondered if he was deaf in that ear as well, as it was obvious he suffered massive head trauma in the past by the huge scar on the side of his head. It was covered by his hair, so Ophelia hadn't noticed it until now. There was something else that was troubling Monet about him, and only she knew it. Pulling a needle out of her lab coat pocket, she held it up to the light.

Gauge froze instantly, and his body became like ice. Ophelia immediately noticed him tensing up at the sight of the huge needle before him. Gauge jerked away, and attempted to get out of the bed. "NO! Gauge don't fight it!" Ophelia jumped up and grabbed his arm. Her heart broke as she heard him crying to get away from her, the doctor, and the needle that were heading towards him. "You need the shot! Just be a good boy and take the shot!"

Monet rolled her eyes, and proceeded to climb up onto the bed. She had seen this in children before, and knowing Gauge's age and situation clone-wise, she wasn't at all shocked he was acting this way. "Gauge, stop it! It will only hurt for a second!" Monet grabbed his arm just as Ophelia made a daring attempt of her own. It seemed to work before... why not try it again?

She wrapped her arms around him and held him tightly. Gauge's body stopped shivering for a split second as Monet quickly took the opportunity to stick his arm with the needle, injecting the serum into his body once and for all. She pulled the empty syringe away from him and he relaxed a bit, Ophelia's arms still wrapped around him.

"There. You've been immunized for the flu, mumps, shingles, and measles. I suppose it's too late for shingles. I can tell by some of your scars you've had them already. Anyhow, you'll be good as new, and I suggest you try not to move around as much as you are. You've got a few open wounds I haven't stitched yet." Monet noticed by the blood that was now seeping through his light blue hospital pajamas. Gauge winced and cried out in pain, realizing Ophelia had been there holding him through the entire shot. He looked to her with those gorgeous eyes of his as if to thank her, and she immediately blushed.

"I have something I need to speak with Gauge about alone if you don't mind, Ophelia." Monet said, tossing the needle into a nearby sharps container. Ophelia was startled by this but understood. She did her duty by placing a clean band-aid over the shot area, and reassured Gauge with a gentle touch on the shoulder.

"Yes, Monet," She spoke softly then bowed. "I'll be in the area... just hit your call bell if you need me, Gauge." It pained her to leave, and she knew there was no eavesdropping when Monet was around. She simply took her exit and hoped the private meeting would go quickly so that she could see Gauge again. Turning to look at her reflection in the glass, she noticed she was still blushing.

Monet turned back to Gauge when she noticed Ophelia was gone, and sat down in the chair beside his bed. "Well then, I guess there is nothing left to say to you except... Congratulations!"

Gauge's eyes squinted as he sat there in the bed completely dumbfounded "...Con...gratulations?"

Ophelia continued walking down the hallway in a daze. There was something about Gauge that just kept her mind off of everything that was going wrong in her life. It was as if Dublin didn't even matter to her at the moment. She turned back for a moment to gaze at the entrance to Gauge's room when suddenly she crashed into someone else. Both Ophelia and the other person went flying to the black and white tiled floor in a heap.

"Oh my god! Daisuke!" Ophelia pushed herself up off of the ground, a bit embarrassed by what she had just done. The familiar green-haired male nurse smiled non-chalantly and pushed himself off of the floor as well. Ophelia helped him up onto his feet.

The young male nurse, Daisuke, was taller, quite slender, and wore a bandage on his face as well as a sling on his left arm. "Oii! It's no big deal Ophelia! I was actually looking for you-- Dublin just ran into me a few minutes ago, and I came to warn you. He doesn't look very happy. He didn't say anything to me, but he had that look in his eyes. I would avoid him like the plague if I were you!"

Ophelia dusted herself off, and rolled her eyes. "Oh, like I'm scared of him." She grunted, fixing her hair.

"He knows about Gauge... and you"

Daisuke was never this concerned. The tone of his voice was enough to unsettle her stomach. Her heart suddenly picked up speed...

___

Later on that night, Gauge had woken up from resting and was feeling a little better than earlier. Progressively the infection was disappearing from his body, and he was regaining more and more of his old strength back. Of course eating had helped. Monet had delivered some shocking news to him earlier, and he just had to get his mind off of what she had told him. He didn't even know if he could believe what she had said just yet.

He decided to take a walk. The nurse had said it was okay for him to get up and walk around a bit as long as he took his IV with him, and Gauge really wanted a cigarette. He kept his hair over his eyes to hide the fact that he was a clone, but from what he could see he was pretty well protected there. It must have been Virgo's words that kept the doctors and nurses in check. He couldn't help but smirk.

There was one other thing bothering him, and he couldn't tell what it was. His thoughts were on Ophelia, and he wondered where she had run off to. He decided it wasn't any of his concern, and kept moving towards the smoking room with his rolling IV rack in hand.

Ophelia walked up the stairs, looking around every now and then too see if she was being followed. Apparently she had spent most of the afternoon with Daisuke, in an attempt to hide from Dublin. This was about to prove to be nothing but a waste of time as she suddenly saw that ominous shadow at top of the staircase...

Ophelia stopped, looking across the silent, marble-floored lobby at her husband. This was an unusually quiet area of the hospital, used mostly for patient overflow. They were there alone, in front of a huge window that led to the dark world outside. Ophelia couldn't run, and she couldn't hide from him now either. There was nothing left to do but face what was coming to her.

"I've been looking all over for you." Dublin spoke in a deep, ominous tone. His arms were folded across his chest, and she knew he was infuriated. "You didn't come to me last night."

Ophelia looked at the floor, like she knew she should. "I... I've been busy with patients, Dublin, I'm sorry..." Her eyes looked up to him, but they did nothing to soothe his rage. He approached her slowly, and began backing her into a corner. Her body pressed up against the hot radiator, and she trembled as he stood over her.

"You know, I heard all about your little escape last night. You left the hospital even though I strictly forbid you to, THEN; I hear you've been hanging around one of those filthy, disgusting, sub-humans? Not only did I hear you spent the entire night worrying about this clone, but you stayed by its stinking side all day long? Are you TRYING to make me upset with you, Ophelia? Are you testing my power, and my authority? Is this some foolish little form of rebellion?" He was inches from her face, and she could feel the warmth of his breath on her. His hands firmly grasped her wrists and he further pushed her into the wall.

"NO! I wasn't, I swear!!" She cried out into the empty lobby.

At the top of the landing, there was another figure in the shadows. Gauge couldn't believe his eyes. He had been told he would find Ophelia in that area, but he was shocked to witness what he was in fact seeing. He gritted his teeth, but held back in order to avoid interfering and making matters worse.

Dublin drew his hand back. "You want me to hit you, don't you?! It's the ONLY way you listen to me! How many times do I have to tell you there is nothing and NO ONE out there for you!?"

Ophelia gritted her own teeth and jerked to get away from him, but Dublin's strength overpowered her and he swung his arm forward, striking her on the cheek with his fist. Ophelia dropped to her knees stunned, and began to cry. Dublin stepped away; he was unaware that he had just incurred the wrath of another.

"So, you like to hit girls, huh?" Gauge's stern voice growled from behind him.

Dublin turned abruptly, shocked to see that someone had been watching the whole time.

"Clone..." he spoke softly, then regained himself. His face was red with anger seeing the sub-human patient standing behind him, holding his IV rack close by his side. "This doesn't concern you, Filth! Go back to the gutter you crawled out of! I'll hit whichever bitches I please. Some need to be taught who is in charge, just as scum like you."

Gauge couldn't believe this man's words. Was this truly the man Ophelia had married WILLINGLY? It must have been against her will. He couldn't hold himself back any longer and rushed over to Dublin, throwing his fist out and cracking Dublin across the face.

Ophelia had regained herself and couldn't believe what she was seeing! How did Gauge find her, and more importantly, what was he doing out of bed?! Did he just do what she thinks he did? Oh my god... he did. He just struck Dublin in an effort to protect her!

"I guess I can hit whichever bitches I please then!" Gauge watched Dublin struggle to regain himself. Gauge had quite a left hook, but would he have enough stamina to face the wrath he had just brought out of Dublin by striking him?

It was an all out fist fight now. Dublin lunged forward and tackled Gauge, throwing him to the marble floor with a crash. Ophelia pulled herself up the wall to her feet, and could do nothing but scream out and beg for them to stop. Dublin without a doubt had the upper hand on Gauge, and this was no contest. Dublin was not only twice his size, but in good health, and had his second arm. Ophelia was shocked to quickly learn Gauge wasn't as handicapped as he appeared!

Gauge used his feet to sock Dublin in the gut and get him to release his wrist. Dublin quickly came back at him by throwing him into the stairwell railing head first, nearly knocking him unconscious. Gauge's hand grasped Dublin's hair and he once again swung his leg out to strike Dublin, this time in the chest. Dublin fully took the blow, but it wasn't enough to take him down. He threw Gauge to the floor, and ripped the IV lines right out of his arm. The glass bottles flew off the rack, and Dublin grabbed one of them. He used his right arm to take the bottle and smash it over unsuspecting Gauge's head. "SUB-HUMAN GARBAGE!" blood flowed from Dublin's mouth as he yelled out.

Ophelia screamed out at the top of her lungs. Dublin was quickly taking over this fight, and she was sure he was going to kill him if she didn't do something! "DUBLIN YOU'RE GOING TO KILL HIM!!!" She cried. But it was hopeless; Dublin took hold of Gauge's steel IV rack and began to strike him with it over and over across the back and head. Blood was forming splatters all over the floor as Gauge struggled to get up and fight back. He was quickly learning that he wasn't going to walk away from this battle, and after what Monet had told him earlier in private, using the weapon was strictly forbidden.

"What the HELL is going on here?!"

Ophelia suddenly heard a voice. She looked up and saw two figures running down the stairs towards the lobby area. It was Monet and Daisuke! Monet saw it first, but Ophelia quickly caught on as Dublin threw the IV rack down and withdrew a metal object from his pocket. Ophelia's heart dropped into her stomach when she realized it was a scalpel...

Monet ran towards Dublin, preparing a needle full of Demerol, but it was too late. The scalpel struck unsuspecting Gauge directly in his open shoulder wound.

The scream was unlike anything any of them had ever heard. Dublin dug the small blade deep into his tender, already burning flesh until it struck bone. Monet stabbed Dublin in the neck with the syringe and pumped the liquid into his body. Before he could even turn to swing at her, Dublin's eyes rolled back in his head and he collapsed like a rock onto the cold floor.

The fight was officially over.

Ophelia was too stunned to move, but her instinct told her to run to Gauge, who was screaming at the top of his lungs in pain. Monet sat there for a moment catching her breath before her doctor instincts kicked in-- Daisuke's already had. They were soon joined by security and a few more hospital workers.

"Take it easy Gauge, don't try to move..." Daisuke's worried voice advised, holding Gauge's head still out of fear of spinal injury. Monet made one last sweep over Dublin with her eyes to make sure the pain medication had completely knocked him out. When she knew that was the case, her attentions turned completely to the screaming Gauge, and the scalpel in his wound.

"I NEED A STRETCHER HERE!" She cried out, assisting Daisuke in trying to keep Gauge still. He was without a doubt injured, and she feared Dublin may have done serious head and spinal damage with that IV rack. She knew the scalpel had struck an artery as well by the amount of blood Gauge was pouring out onto the floor around them.

Ophelia still couldn’t move, even though she desperately wanted to. She could only watch in terror as the paramedics rushed to get Gauge onto a stretcher and to the O.R. His head was strapped down, and his spine immobilized by a collar. This looked very serious... had Dublin injured him THAT badly? Had Gauge wanted to save her so badly that he risked his life to do it?

Ophelia began to cry uncontrollably.
