Meanwhile, the game was advancing. Valentina got another piece in the mail. The mob boss got it first. She grinned as she pulled out the envelope.

“Yes!” she said to herself. Valentina marched back into the house.

A white knight.

Boris started to worry.

“Something to wrong?” Valentina asked. Her right-hand man looked up. She had her head cocked to the side. She wasn't stupid. Boris stuck up his thumb.

“No,” he said. He forced himself to smile. The boss stared at him but said nothing. Boris didn't move. Valentina shrugged. He couldn't relax until she turned away.

This was getting out of hand. Boris has seen this path before. It won't end well. He had to try and stop the madness. Though, that might be too late.

He was going to have to get more help. It looked like he didn't have a choice.

The doorbell rang. Ruri shivered. Who was it now? She looked out the peephole. Boris stood outside.

The woman froze. She hesitated before she opened the door.

“Hey,” Boris said.

“What do you want?” Ruri asked. Boris had a grim look on his face.

“We need to talk,” he said. The woman said nothing. She moved away from the door.

“Come in,” Ruri whispered. Boris followed her into the house.

Mikhael got a white knight in the mail too. He turned the piece over in his hand. He still had questions. Who kept sending these? Why were they doing this? Mikhael picked up my phone.

“Hello?” Ruri asked.

“Mom,” he said with the knight in my hand. “I have something to ask you.” There was a pause on the other line.

“What?” his mother asked. Mikhael tried to think about how to word this. What was he even going to ask? The boy wasn't thinking when he dialed his mother. He pressed his lips together.

“Was Dad a fan of chess?” Mikhael finally asked.

Moments earlier

Ruri and Boris sat on the living room couch. She wouldn't look at him.

“Why are you here?” the woman asked.

“It's starting again,” Boris said.

“What do you mean?” Ruri asked. He dropped a plastic bag in her lap. Ruri looked down and froze.

“Don't tell me…” she said. The black pawn was staring back at her in the bag. She turned to Boris.

“When did she get this?” Ruri asked.

“Last week,” the Russian man said. The Japanese woman's right leg started to shake. Boris looked down at the bagged-up pawn. He said only one thing under his breath.

“I will fix this.”

That's when the phone rang. Boris and Ruri looked at each other. He nodded once. She hesitated at first but then answered the phone.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Mom, I have something to ask you,” Mikhael said.
