This was it. War was coming and he might not survive this. Boris
marched up to the door and rang the bell. This should be no biggie.
He could do this. Ruri opened the door.
“Boris?” she asked. The Russian man cleared his throat.
“I've got to tell you something. Can I come in?”
She stiffened in place. Ruri pressed her lips together.
----------
She looked ready to run away. Ruri kept her eyes down.
“What do you want?” Her hands trembled on her lap. Boris paced
himself.
“There is a war coming,” he said in a low voice. Ruri put her hand
to her chest.
“No…”
“Don't worry. I will keep your boy safe.” He reached for her hand.
Ruri drew back. She wouldn't look at him.
“Why are you here?” she asked. Boris didn't wait.
“I love you!” he blurted out. She jerked her head up. Ruri's eyes
looked so big. Her lower lip trembled.
“Please listen,” Boris pleaded. The woman stared at him. He looked
so sincere in the eyes.
“I've loved you for a long time. I have always loved you.” He
looked ready to cry.
“Boris…” she said. The Russian man grabbed her by the hands.
“You don't have to give me an answer now,” he said. “When this is
all over, I will be back.” Ruri's mind went blank. She stared at
him. Boris bowed his head.
“Thank you,” he said. He let go of her hand. Ruri's mouth hung
open. Boris rose to his feet.
“Goodbye,” he said. The Russian man turned and walked out of the
living room. She was left sitting there, stunned. Boris had been
kinder to her. He tried to comfort her. She never understood why.
But how did she feel about him? Ruri never thought about it until
now. She put her hand to her chest.
“Boris…”
Ruri didn't understand why she was so worried.
