Nikita + Vera

He wasn't looking for a bride in his quest to the top. She was the one to find him.

1979

It was New Year's Eve. That first meeting wasn't exactly romantic. More like an accident. She was at that New Year's Eve party downtown with her friends. Over the course of the night, the women got separated. Vera looked for them as she held her cup to her side.

“Yoko? Ally? Yulia? Where did you go?” she asked. So many people in this house. Vera started to get nervous. This wasn't her scene. Maybe she could find the door. Cell phones didn't exist back then. Vera kept looking for her friends or an exit when she bumped into a solid form.

“Oh!”

“Hey.”

“I'm so sorry!” Vera quickly bowed. That's when she and Nikita first locked eyes. There was something there. Not exactly love. Maybe interest.

“It's fine,” he said. Vera might as well have been an angel from Heaven. Her flaming long red hair stood out in the dim lights. Who knew baby blue eyes went well with it?

“You look lost,” he said.

“I am,” she said. “I can't find my friends or the exit.” The young man smiled.

“You want to stay by me until you find them?” he asked. She gave him a confused look.

“But I don't even know you,” she said. His smile brightened.

“I'm Nikita Popova,” he said. “And you are?”

“Vera,” she said. “Vera Lebedev.” And that was the first night.

Close to twenty years they stayed together. After she died, Nikita never loved again.

Valentina + Mikhael

2006

“Is it over?”

“Yes.”

“What now?”

“She'll leave us alone.”

“Do you think she will?”

“I don't know.”

“I love you.”

“What?”

“I love you.”

Valentina tried not to laugh. Mikhael frowned.

“I'm serious.”

“Oh…”

“Or… I think I love you.”

“You think you love me?”

“I don't know. I am still trying to figure this out!” He pouted as she laughed.

“Why are you laughing?”

“You're an idiot.”

“Well that's just mean!”

“But you are my idiot.”

“Huh?”

She kissed him on the nose. “Are you going to stick around?”

“Might as well. I am your husband after all. I could learn to love you.”

“Could?”

“What do you want me to do?”

“That's up to you.”

“That's it?”

Valentina kissed him in response. Mikhael kissed her back.
