Annabel ran. Ran as fast as she could. They were after here. The Shadows of the Night. She had used her magic to defend herself against the masters wrath. Why had she been so stupid she knew that he was the only one to protect her. No, not the master. Jacob. Jacob, the only one who was like her. Now she didn't know where he was. Last time she saw him was before she had used her magic. Annabel stumbled, then fell. `Oh, no.' she thought. They were closing in on her. “Annabel.” She heard them whisper. “Annabel” It sounded like Jacobs voice. “Annabel, wakeup. Wakeup.” She felt shaking. “Mmmmm.” She groaned. She bolted up. “Oh Jacob thank god. I had a dream that I used my magic and they found me. Jacob don't let that happen please. Don't let that happen to me.” She wrapped her arms around him. She was scared. Jacob put his arms around her back and kissed the top of her head. “Annabel you know that I won't.” He pulled her back. “The master wants you. Please don't aggravate him this time Ann. Please don't.” She sighed. The master was already mad at her she didn't want to anger him more.
“I won't, I promise.” She got out of bed. Jacob started to walk out the door. “Hey Jacob.” “Yeah?” He turned toward her and walked forward. He was standing right in front of her. His light blue eyes looking at her. They were exactly the same height. He had blonde hair, she had brown. He had blue eyes she had green. She loved his blue eyes. She leaned forward and kissed him hard on the lips. And pulled away. Jacob had a shocked expression on his face. Then he blushed. He bent forward and kissed her back for longer. “ANNABEL!” The master shouted from the bottom of the stairs. Jacob pulled away. He backed away and ran out the door. She quickly got dressed. `I wonder if Jacob is ashamed of that kiss. I've realized that I really do love him. Oh I remember when we first met.' she thought.
*********
It all started when Annabel was little. She first found out she was magical by accidentally turning the teacher into a frog when she got angry. Then she was never the same girl. Everyone treated her like she was special. Then she met Jacob. It was one day at lunch. She was in the first stage of private school, year 1953. Her and master had decided to move into London. She had no where to sit. So she sat in the only seat that was available. It was by a very cute boy. He was quiet. “Hello I'm Annabel. I'm magical.” He looked up and smiled. “I'm Jacob and I know who you are, you're the masters daughter. I live there to. My fathers a servant. And I'm magical too.” She was so dumbstruck that it must have shown on her face. He laughed. “We can be friends, right? I could protect you and help you control your powers.” She smiled. She was happy that someone else was like her. “ I would like that very much.” She had said. They've been best friends ever since. He always protecting her and teaching her about magic. That was when she was nine. She was now fifteen. And she was starting to get feelings for Jacob. She smiled at the memory and blushed about the kiss. “ANNABEL, GET DOWN HERE NOW.” She sighed. She ran down the stairs and into the dining room.
“Sorry master. I could not wake up.” The master frowned. “Why must I always remind you to call me father. I swear you hang out with that boy so much that you call me master. It seems like your not even my daughter any more.” The master motioned to the chair next to him. She sat down. “Now you know that I want a suitable husband for you. Not a servant. Now Raymond is coming over. And you have voice lessons at ten.” She sighed. She didn't really like Raymond. Well not like she liked Jacob, She liked Jacob as a lover. She liked Raymond more of a friend kind of thing. But he had feelings for her. “Father why must I marry a boy of wealth. I don't love Raymond. I never did.” He glared at her. “So I suppose you love Jacob then?” She looked him straight in the eye. “ I love no one. Well not now at least. I don't get why I cannot choose my own betrothed.” He looked back down at his book.
“Because you are a lady. And ladies do not choose, they are chosen. And besides, love is not important. You are going to marry who I choose. End of discussion.” She opened her mouth to argue. But he raised his hand. She felt herself getting angry. She felt the magic slowly coursing through her veins. She remembered what Jacob said. `Don't let the magic take over you. You take over the magic.' She calmed herself down. “I must get ready for lessons and Raymond's visit. Please excuse me.” She got up and walked away from the table just to catch Jacob standing beside the door. He saw her then ran. She realized he been there the whole time. “Jacob!” She ran after him. “Jacob wait!” He stopped and turned. He walked up to her. Though he did not look her in the eye. “You called Mistress?” She was shocked, Jacob never called her Mistress. “Jacob why are you calling me Mistress? Were friends. Hopefully more then friends.” He looked at her, with hurt and anger in his eyes. “What was that kiss this morning? Just a ploy? Just to make me think you loved me?” She looked at him with tears in her eyes. Didn't he understand? She lied to the master so he did not get in trouble. “I do love you. I lied. Don't you understand? I wanted to make sure you did not get into trouble because of me.”
He smiled. The look was gone. He started laughing. “Your face. Your face.” he laughed harder. She was dumbfounded. `why is he laughing?' she thought. “Jacob I'm confused, why are you laughing?” He looked at her. “ I just wanted to see your true feelings for me.” Now it was her turn to be angry. “ Oh you big oaf! You know what? That was the meanest thing ever, Jacob!” He started laughing again. “Humph!” she said. And stormed off. He came after her still laughing. “Ann don't be mad. Where are you going don't you have to get all prettied up for Raymond?” He said putting an edge on Raymond's name. She smiled to herself. He was jealous. “ Yes that's right I do. Come with me.” He looked at her with a curious look. She smiled. “Fine but once he shows up I'm leaving.
That guy needs to get his priorities straight. He's also so in love with you, it makes me sick just thinking about how he looks at you. Promise me one thing, don't let him kiss you.” Annabel turned around and through herself in his arms. “I'll try not to. Trust me if he does I won't like one bit. Were more made for friends me and Raymond.” Annabel kissed Jacob and then dragged him to her room. So she could talk and get ready at the same time. She walked into the room. He followed her. “So your saying you'll let him kiss you, but you won't enjoy it.” She walked behind the changing curtain. “I guess. But you mister, owe me a magic lesson tonight. What will I learn about.” There was silence. She heard him walking somewhere and then the sound just stopped.
She heard a pop. “Jacob?” A voice came behind her. She quickly reached for her robe as she was naked. “I will be teaching you how to disappear and reappear where you want.” He grabbed her wrist as she was trying to put her robe on. “Wait.” He said. She slapped his hand and pulled the robe around her. “You know its not proper to sneak up on a woman when she's getting dressed!” Really Annabel wasn't angry, but she didn't want him to know that. “I can't help it. Your so beautiful.” She blushed. He always knew how to get her to blush. “Out, out, out, so I can finish getting dressed. Could you hand me my green dress.” He walked over to her closet. “The one that makes your eyes look even more magnificent then they are?” She blushed again.
She was so embarrassed she made the light bulb pop. “Opps. Yes I guess that one.” She could tell that Jacob wasn't pleased with that. “You know your not suppose to let your powers into your emotions. We got to work on that.” He handed her the dress. In ten minutes she was already for Raymond. She had her green dress with her favorite dress shoes and her hair was down and curly. Her nurse finished fixing here hair. “There all ready. How do I look Carrie?” Carrie was her nurse. “ You look magnificent my lady. If your mother could see you, she would be so proud.” Annabel was so overjoyed. Her mother had died years ago. She had died in a carriage accident father had said. Every time Carrie said that she felt so complete. Like being her mother was her destiny. “Thank you Carrie. When you leave send Jacob in please.” “Yes, my lady.” Jacob walked in the room he blushed. “You look so beautiful. And for Raymond to.” He grumbled the last part. “Oh Jacob you jealous every time I even talk to the guy. Its not like I'm in love with him.” Just then Jacobs dad came in. “My lady, Sir Raymond is here.” “Thank you, Charles. Well here goes nothing. Good bye till later Jacob.”
“Come Jacob, Master wants to speak to you.” Jacob looked at Annabel. Then followed his father out of the room. Annabel walked down the stairs. She saw Raymond standing by the door. She gasped. He looked different since she'd last seen him. The last time she saw him was a year ago before he had to go on an assignment. Now he looked older and much more handsome. `I wonder if he's more mature now?' she thought. He looked up. “Annabel, you look stunning!” He said. She blushed. “Thank you Raymond. You look wonderful yourself.” He walked over and held out his arm for her to put her arm through his. She did. “It has been so long Annabel.” He said. “Yes it has. I have been wondering when you would come back.”
“Would you like to go for a walk with me?” Raymond asked. “Yes, I would love to.” Little did Annabel know that Jacob was following them and watching her. They walked out to the garden. “I've heard you've been practicing your magic while I've been gone.” “Yes, I have. Jacob has been teaching me. I've learned so much and I am grateful for that good of a teacher.” Raymond frowned. “Ah, so the Jacob Malacarly has been teaching you. That's good.” Annabel looked up at him lovingly. Her eyes sparkling. “I love magic. It makes me feel like a whole different person. It makes me feel beautiful when I'm not.” Annabel caught a movement in the bushes. `Hmm? Was that a cat?' she thought. She turned back towards Raymond. He was looking at her with love in his eyes. She smiled “You are beautiful. More beautiful then any lady I have ever seen.” He leaned in to kiss her. Since Raymond was taller then her he had to bend down. She stood on her tiptoes to meet his lips. She heard a gasp. She broke away and looked around. She saw no one.
She kissed Raymond again. She felt her powers flowing through her. Magic escaped her. Suddenly she remembered what Jacob had said about using to much magic. `Never use to much magic or the magicals will come after you with the Shadows of the Night.' Raymond pulled her closer and she forgot about Jacob. She let her magic flow. He broke away. “Annabel I would like permission to take you out tomorrow night for dinner.” Annabel was so happy that he had asked. “Yes I would love to. I would love to very much.” They kissed again.
**********
That night Annabel was lying in her bed reading. There was a knock on the door. “Come in.” she called. The door opened and Jacob walked into the room. His face was expressionless. She suddenly remembered her promise to him. She felt guilty. “Hey Jacob.” She said. He walked over to her bed. She sat up and patted the space right next to her. He sat down. “So how did the date with Raymond go.” He said grumpily. She looked up from her book. “ It wasn't a date. And it went fine.” He finally looked at her. “Did he kiss you?” She covered her face with the book while she blushed. “No, he didn't.” “Oh good.” He said uncertainly. She looked at him and changed the subject. “So are you here to give me my magic lesson teacher?” He smiled warily.
“Yes, now stand up. Tonight were going to practice what I told you earlier. Its called dematerializing. Now focus on a place in this room where you want to go. Close your eyes and picture it. Now repeat after me. `dissipate'.” Annabel closed her eyes and concentrated to the place behind the curtain. “Dissipate!” She shouted. She heard a pop and opened her eyes. She was behind the curtain. She pictured sitting on the bed. “Dissipate!”
She opened her eyes again. She had appeared on the bed right next to Jacob. “Yes! I did it! Thank you Jacob!” She through her arms around him. He pulled her back and kissed her passionately. It seemed like forever before they broke away. “Congratulations. You did wonder full. You can also whisper it or think it and it will work too.” He smiled. Suddenly there was a scream. “Carrie!” Annabel shouted. She ran out of the room and down the stairs.
Carrie was in the living room. She was levitating. “Annabel!” Jacob shouted running in behind her. He saw Carrie.
“Annabel, quickly go to your room and lock the door. Do the protection spell.” Annabel just stood there. Unable to talk or move. It was like her body was frozen. She heard a cackle of laughter. “We have come for you Annabel.” A whisper came out of no where. It sound like a snake hissing. She saw a flicker of darkness. “Annabel go NOW!” Jacob shouted. Then he realized she couldn't move. “We Have found you at last.” It hissed. “When you kissed that boy you let your magic flow. Big mistake Princess.” `Princess?' She thought `I'm not a Princess.'
Suddenly the room was dark. She felt something grab her hand. `Its me.' a thought went into her head. `Jacob?' she thought. `Yes now listen, we need to do the protection spell. Think shield ok. It will protect us from the magical.'
`Jacob, so it is the Shadows of the Night?' `Yes. When you kissed Raymond so lovingly you let your power go and they tracked it to here.' She felt guilty. `Um so we say it on the count of three right?' `Ri-' They felt a force of magic really strong and dark. '1,2,…..3 SHEILD!' They both shouted in their minds. There was a flash of light then everything went black.
********
Annabel woke up on the living room floor. She looked outside the window. It was about mid day. Jacob lay asleep right beside her. She could not remember what happened. The last thing she could remember was a scream. She looked back at Jacob he looked like he had a painful fight. She gasped. The fight. She remembered. The shadows of the night had come for her because of the kiss with Raymond. Then Jacob had protected her again. She remembered what the shadows said. Well hissed actually. `Big mistake Princess.' `Princess?' she thought ` why would they call me a Princess? Is there something I do not know about?' Jacob woke up with a start. He looked around franticly. His eyes rested on Annabel. He sighed. “Are you ok, Annabel?” She looked away from him. “Yes I'm fine.” He turned her face toward him. “Are you sure?” She looked straight into his eyes. “I'm fine but…” She trailed off. Annabel was afraid to ask her question. She was afraid what would be the answer. “But what?” Jacob asked. She thought that he might understand that she was scared to find the answer to her question. `I guess that I'll have to face my fear and ask it anyway,' she thought. “Jacob,” she said “What the Shadows said is bothering me. They said `Big mistake Princess.' What did they mean by that? Is there something that your not telling me?” Now it was Jacobs turn to look away. She was afraid her guess of the matter was right. “I'm afraid there is something that we aren't telling you.” He said. She scooted over to where he was facing. “We?” He looked her in the eye. “The magicals and I.” She gasped and fell back and started scooting away. “Your in lead with the magicals?” She said bewildered. This is not what she had guessed. “Listen Annabel. The magicals aren't bad. I had just told you that because I did not want you to go looking for them until you were ready.”
She had backed up to the wall. He came toward her. She cowered. “Ann don't be afraid. I'm still me.” She looked up at him. “So if you magicals aren't evil then are the Shadows not evil?” Jacobs face went grim. “Unfortunately they are. They used to be magicals before their spirits had been condemned to evil. They were so evil that their body took form of what most evils matter is, darkness and shadows.” Jacob squatted down so his face was right next to Annabel's. “I did not want them to find you or the magicals to think you were ready until you learned more about magic. So I told you to not use to much magic. But I guess that did not work. Then after a while of teaching you, I fell for you. I knew I shan't of. But I could not help it.” He stopped to let her take it all in. “So your saying,” she said after a pause. “that the magicals are good.
And the shadows are still bad. But they used to be magicals that had their souls condemned. Did I leave anything out?” Jacob smiled. “Nope. Well except something I did not tell you yet?” “What's that?” His smile disappeared “Annabel you're a Princess. You're the Princess of the Magical World.” She looked at him her mouth fell open. “So your saying that I'm a Princess and that there's another world?”

It had been two weeks since Annabel found out she was a Princess. She could recall the conversation clearly. “So your saying that I'm a Princess and there's another world?” she had said. “Not exactly,” Jacob had said. “it's the same world but its hidden in a place no one can find it but magical people. Its in the forest.” She had looked at him angrily “If its in the forest then how come I've never seen it? He smiled. “Because you didn't go so deep into the forest before. Its in the very middle in a clearing. But you won't be able to enter unless you know how.” “How?” He had a mischievous look on his face. “Not now. You have to learn a lot more. In about two weeks time. You will be ready.” “But Jacob,” she said sadly “If I'm a princess then my father isn't really my father. Is he?” He looked at her with sorrow in his eyes. “No. You were placed into his care. Your real parents are in the magical world waiting for you to join them.”
That conversation had been the worst in her life. She was now ready to go to the magical world. And she was scared…….
