Sato staggered on the stumps as he swung his sword around, knocking a piece of wood into the air over and over. The snow had finally melted and the climate was warming up, so Sato was able to get back to his regular training. His foot slipped several times as he stepped across the stumps. He was out of it from his month off.

Ina came down the walkway. She stopped a moment and watched Sato go at his training. He made a mistake in his step and fell to the ground hard. The block fell too and smacked Sato on the forehead.

“Nice footwork,” Ina said.

“Heh, thanks,” Sato said as he sat up. “What’re you doing here so early, Hirashi?”

“Early?” repeated Ina. “Um, in case you didn’t know, it’s fifteen till nine.”

“Oh no!” Sato said, hurrying to his feet. “I’m late! I gotta get dressed!”

Ina stood aside and watched as Sato shot toward his house. Ina sighed. “That boy would be so lost without me.”

“Bye!” Pinaka called as she watched Ina and Sato walk away from the house, heading for school. “Have a wonderful day! Oh, and Miss Hirashi, you’re welcome to come over to dinner tonight!”

She returned to the house and went into the sitting room. She took a seat and turned on the television to her episodes. Grandpa came in from the kitchen, holding a pot of tea.

“Oh, I could have done that for you,” Pinaka said when she noticed him.

“Your help is appreciated,” Grandpa said, “but not always necessary. Please, have some with me?”

“Yes, thank you,” said Pinaka, taking a cup from Grandpa.

“Miss Oruda,” Grandpa said, “I know that you have come here for training under my guidance, isn’t that correct?”

“Yes, it is. I’d like to become as competent as Sato is.” Jira rubbed against Pinaka’s back. Pinaka took a moment to pet her. “Jira and I would love to be able to fight demons and actually win. Muma wasn’t a bad opponent for us, but we’ve seen some pretty scary demons, and all we can think about is tucking our tails and running.”

“Well then, I want you to start on it. How about after lunch we go to the shrine and you can get some practice in.”

“Oh, yes,” Pinaka said cheerfully, “that sounds great. I would love to.”

“Kannin, pass it here!”

Sato raced down the soccer field. He kicked the ball high into the air, passing it to a teammate, and crossed the stretch to the goal. He spun on the barely green grass and looked to the air as the ball came back at him. He timed it right and planted a hand to the ground, raising his foot fast. He kicked the ball as hard as he could and watched as it passed the goalie and shot into the net of the goal.

“Yes!” Sato said excitedly, clenching his fist triumphantly. His team raced to him, congratulating him on an excellent goal.

“That was a perfect shot,” said his friend Hitemaru Aneto as they changed in the locker room after gym. “That martial arts you study really helps.”

“Yeah, it does,” Sato said.

“So, Kannin,” Hitemaru said, placing Sato in a headlock. “I know about that new girl Higuro living with you. Tell me, how far have you gotten with her?”

“What?” said Sato, ignoring the headlock as he tied his shoes. “Aneto, you’re crazy. I haven’t done anything with her. Get your mind outta the gutter.”

“I should’ve expected as much.” Hitemaru released Sato and patted him on the back. “You’ve got the hots for Hirashi, doncha? I bet it’s her you’ve been messing around with, right?”

“Knock it off.” Sato stood, brushing off Hitemaru. “I haven’t done anything with anyone. Muma’s just staying with my family, and Hirashi’s just a friend.”

Hitemaru’s brow twitched. “You call her by her given name, huh? You have done ‘it’ with her!”

Sato’s face went red at the thought. “No way! I told you, nothing’s happened!”

They walked under the walkway from the gym back to the main building of the school. “But you call her by her given name. You’ve known Hirashi since you were kids and still call her by her surname.”

Sato stopped, looking at his friend. “I’ve known you for at least three years and still call you Aneto. And you call me Kannin.”

Hitemaru shooed the thought. “That’s different. We’re guys; you couldn’t possibly have any feelings for me.” He paused a minute, then added, “Do you?”

“No way, freak!” Sato said, stomping down the pathway.

“Kannin!” Ina called as she rushed from the gym.

Sato turned around, surprised. “Hirashi, what’s up?” She looked exasperated.

“Have you seen Muma?” Ina asked. “She never came back to the locker room after gym. I’m worried about her.”

“Why?” Sato said. “You know how she is. I’m sure she’s perfectly fine.”

A loud cry rang over the school grounds suddenly. Sato looked in the direction of the soccer field where he was sure the sound came from. “Hirashi, let’s hurry!” he said.

“Guys, wait!” Hitemaru called after them. “What do I tell the teacher?”

“Ah!” Pinaka cried as she tripped over her own feet and her face smacked into the ground. She rolled onto her back and sat up, looking around at Grandpa. “I really don’t think I’m going to get this.”

“Give it time, Miss Oruda, you will,” Grandpa said.

A loud ringing filled the air suddenly. Pinaka pulled from her pocket the large button she used to track down demons. She gasped as the map popped up. “There’s a demon nearby. And it looks like it’s at Sato’s school!”

Muma grasped her left arm that poured with blood. She stared at the man standing before her. He wore the body piece of an ancient samurai warrior, had on baggy cotton sweats, tabi shoes, and over his right eye he wore some kind of monocle.

“Who the hell are you?” Muma asked.

The man brandished his katana. It instantly turned into a wolf that took his side. “My name is Ryomaru Takedo. I’m a demon hunter from Kyoto. I’ve come to put you in your place, demon.”

“Take another look,” Muma said. “Do I look like a demon to you? I’m wearing gym shorts for crying out loud! And I don’t even have any demon powers!”

“My scanner says otherwise,” Ryomaru said, tapping his monocle. “So go down peacefully or things will get brutal.”

Muma clenched her fist. “You don’t scare me.”

Ryomaru pointed at Muma and commanded the wolf next to him, “Hasu, attack!”

The wolf bounded forward. Muma shielded herself, fright shooting through her body as she watched the transforming animal dart at her.

“Yah!” Sato cried, running in front of Muma and kicking Hasu hard, sending him flying backwards and landing gently next to his master.

Ryomaru was startled by the interference. “What’s the meaning of this?” he said.

“I could ask you the same thing,” Sato said, blocking Muma from Ryomaru’s view.

“I’m Ryomaru Takedo, the demon hunter,” Ryomaru said. “Why is it you guard this succubus?”

“Because she’s defenseless,” Sato said. “Muma can’t defend herself. Why do you demon hunters insist on attacking her when she has no powers?”

Ryomaru was silent for a moment, fiddling with his scanner. “I see. So another demon hunter resides in these parts, huh?”

“Yeah, so leave,” Sato said.

Sato heard Ina talking to Muma behind him. He took a quick glance and saw Ina tending to Muma’s wound. He focused back on Ryomaru.

“Look,” Sato said, “we’re living pretty peacefully here without demon hunters causing such a ruckus, especially out in the open like this.” He glanced around seeing students from the next gym class gathering around them.

“Are you this demon’s guardian?” Ryomaru asked.

Sato raised an eyebrow. “I never thought of it that way. I guess you could say something like that.”

“All right, then. Let us do battle. The winner decides the fate of the succubus. What do you say?”

“No, Sati!” Muma called suddenly. Sato turned to look at her. “This guy is really strong, much stronger than Pina. Please, don’t fight him! Just let him do away with me.”

Sato turned back to Ryomaru. “Muma has a point,” he said. “Your aura is huge. There’s no way I could defeat you.”

“So you’ll step aside then?” Ryomaru asked.

Sato smirked. “Nah,” he said. “I kinda like a good challenge. We’ll fight, but only on one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“We gather at the Kannin shrine in a few hours, when school lets out. No one will be in the way there.”

Ryomaru nodded. “Very well,” he said. Hasu lunged forward and passed Sato, grabbing Muma and dragging her back toward Ryomaru. “Until then, I’ll hang on to her.”

“What? No!” Sato cried, running forward. “That’s not part of the deal!”

“Too bad,” Ryomaru said, throwing down a smoke bomb, obscuring Sato’s sight.

Sato backed out of the smoke and waited for it to clear, but Muma was gone, along with the demon hunter. Sato cursed and stomped his foot, turning back to Ina.

“There’s nothing we can do,” Ina said, shrugging. “We’ll have to wait until later.”
