From the corner of Ryomaru’s eye he saw something explode. He quickly rolled to the side, dodging the monster coming at him. The monster hit the ground and formed into a large puddle of blood. The rest of the monsters also dropped to the ground, blood splattering into the air. Ryomaru held a hand to his side, feeling a sharp pain from overexerting himself. Pinaka rushed to his side to make sure he was all right.

They looked over where the mother beast had been. A figure approached from out of it. Pinaka’s jaw dropped as she watched Sato come into clearer view, carrying an unconscious Muma in left his arm, dragging her feet lightly across the ground. A piece of her skirt clung to her hips, signs of it having been burnt off apparent. Sato’s clothes were burned as well. His shirt hung on him like a toga, one pant leg was completely missing while the other was burnt through at the shins, and his shoes were gone. In his free hand he was holding a sword; it was his grandpa’s sword.

“Unbelievable,” Ryomaru said softly. “That kid actually survived.”

Pinaka raced to Sato quickly, wrapping her arms tight around him and Muma, crying, “I thought I had lost the two of you!” She stopped suddenly as a putrid smell filled her nostrils, a smell of burnt hair and flesh. She ran a hand through Sato’s hair and said, “Your hair’s shorter.”

“Yeah,” Sato said. “I almost got eaten alive in there by some ugly things. Muma’s fine, though. Her demon aura kept her alive.”

Pinaka backed up slightly. “Well that’s good. You saved our lives. We would’ve been dead if you hadn’t destroyed that thing.”

Sato carried Muma away from the blood left on the floor and laid her down. He looked at Ryomaru who was tending to Hasu. Jira was fine, having just now climbed onto Pinaka’s shoulder.

“It was scary,” Sato said. “From now on we have to be more careful. We never know what’s waiting for us on the higher floors.”

“So what do we do now?” Pinaka asked. “How do we get to the higher floors? Also, should we rest before moving on, or just go?”

Sato gripped the hilt of his sword. “I have the energy to fight, especially with my grandpa’s sword, but you and Ryomaru look pretty worn out. And I’m not sure if Muma’s gonna wake up any time soon either.”

“We need to get Muma some clothes,” Pinaka said. “She can’t fight in the complete nude.”

“You never know, it might work to our advantage,” Ryomaru said. Sato and Pinaka stared at him. He was facing away from them, so they couldn’t tell if he was being serious or just joking.

“Well, I think I’m going on,” Sato said. “The sooner we make it to the top, the sooner I can save my grandpa. That’s my only concern right now.”

“Sato,” Pinaka said, grabbing him by the wrist as he walked by, “rushing into battle isn’t a smart idea. We have to work as a team. That’s the only way we can win.”

Sato lowered his eyes to the ground. “Maybe you’re right. But like this, by the time we get to the top, he’ll be dead.”

Ryomaru straightened, Hasu standing at his side now. Ryomaru looked directly at Sato. “What if he’s already dead? Then your hurriedness would be for nothing, and would end up getting us killed. And so what if the old man dies?” Sato gritted his teeth and clenched a fist in anger. “I doubt that he would want you to risk death to save his expiring life. I know you can’t possibly tolerate life without your grandfather, but in his death he would want you to live on, to grow and be an honorable man, and pass on the honor he’s taught you to your children, and to their children.”

“Ryomaru may sound cold,” Pinaka said, “but he’s right. Your grandpa has lived a long life. He wouldn’t want yours to be cut short because of him.”

Tears rolled down Sato’s cheeks. How could they say that to him? All he had in his life was his grandpa. He was only sixteen, and was soon to be all alone in the world, with no one there for him, to help him through his hard times, to keep things at the house right. He couldn’t live on his own, not yet.

“What am I to do?” Sato said slowly.

“Huh?” replied Pinaka with a quizzical look.

“Without Grandpa, it’s just me. I might as well be homeless if I lose him. I’d have no one to turn to for help and support when I need it. I’d probably starve. I can’t do anything on my own. I need him around.”

“You’re wrong,” Pinaka said. Sato looked up at her, his eyes wide. “You’ll always have someone looking over you, Sato. You’ll always have someone there to help you, I can promise you that.”

“How do you know?”

Pinaka smiled sweetly as she looked upon Sato like a mother looking onto her son. “Have you noticed your life lately? For several months you’ve had three girls all over you. It’s clear that Ina is madly in love with you, and that you are with her as well. And I doubt Muma would leave you or let something happen to you. Also, I’ve been trying my hardest to bring a motherly affection to your house.

“We all care about you,” Pinaka went on. “We’d never let anything happen to you.”

Sato was quiet. He looked away from her, unable to make eye contact anymore.

Ryomaru crossed his arms. “Is your mushy moment over yet?” he said. “You’re starting to make me queasy.”

Pinaka released Sato and walked over to Muma. She knelt beside her and looked around at Ryomaru. “You and Sato go on,” she said calmly. “I’ll wait for Muma to wake up and then we’ll meet you up ahead.”

Ryomaru nodded. “Come on, boy, let’s go,” he said unemotionally to Sato.

Pinaka smiled after Sato and Ryomaru as they headed into the darkness of the castle. “Ryomaru sure can change his pitch fast,” she said to herself. “A moment ago he was holding me passionately, and now he’s downsizing Sato.”

She looked down at Muma. She gently stroked a hand across the succubus’s cheek. “Wake up soon, please,” she said gently.
