Pretty Woman
-Nikita-
I don't know why she hates me. Takako sat across from me, glaring.
Why does she hate me? Why did I have to be stuck with this woman
for three days?
“What's with you?” I asked. Takako glared at me. Why does she
pretend that she couldn't understand me? I sighed and rolled my
eyes. Mai was visiting her family for three days. For some reason,
she left Takako to watch over me. Why? I don't have any idea. I am
a grown man. I don't need a babysitter. I ain't going to cheat on
Mai either. I may be a flirt, but I'm not a cheat.
Takako sat with her arms folded across her chest.
“Can I get you something?” I asked.
“No,” she snapped. Oh, so she can talk.
“Why don't you like me?” I asked. “Have I done something to offend
you?” That was a stupid question. But I still had to ask. Already,
I wasn't going to like the answer. That monster troll sneered at
me. (Yes, I am calling her a mountain troll. I could call her some
uglier things, but Mai insists that I have to be nice. Ha! Be nice
to her? Why should I? She's a total bitch to me.)
“Why are you married to my sister?” she asked. She might refuse to
speak Russian but her English is really good. Sometimes, it manages
to shock me. I folded my arms across my chest.
“Isn't it obvious?” I asked.
“No, it's not,” she snapped. I shouldn't have to do this with her.
I could be the bigger man and walk away. She would still be in my
house. That's another. Why does she have to stay in the house to
“babysit” me? I thought she got herself a small apartment in the
city. (That in itself is another rabbit hole that I am just not
going to get into.)
“Because I love her?” I said. Her right eye started to twitch.
“You don't even know her!” the mountain troll said.
“We're getting to know each other,” I said. Do not engage in
conflict. Don't play her games. I can just get up and leave. It's
not that hard. Nothing is keeping me here. This is my house. I
could throw her out if I wanted.
I noticed her staring at me as she shook her head.
“What?” I asked.
“She won't be coming back, you know?” Takako said. I wrinkled my
nose.
“What are you talking about?” I asked. “Of course she will. Mai's
my wife!”
“That's doesn't mean anything,” she said. “If dad and grandma have
any say in it, she's going home.” Okay, what the hell is this? Is
she trying to play some sick mind game with me?
“I don't know what your angle is here,” I said.
“It's not an angle,” she said. “I'm just telling the truth.” No,
I'm going to fall for this. I cleared my throat.
“We'll see about that,” I said.
“You think I'm playing, don't you?” she asked.
“No,” I said. “This is Mai we're talking about. She loves me more.”
Takako rolled her eyes.
“There you go again,” she said. “You're throwing that word around.
How long have you two been married?” I looked at her like she was
growing a second head out of her neck.
“Why?” I asked.
“Just answer the question.”
“Close to a year.”
“How much do you know about her?”
I threw up my hands. “I don't have time for this.” I got up from
the table and gathered up my plate. I lost my appetite for
breakfast. Takako sat back with a smirk on her face.
“See? You don't really know her,” she said. I
waved her off as I walked back to the kitchen.
“I'm not doing this with you,” I said. “I know the truth and I
don't have to prove anything to you.” I walked to the kitchen with
that mountain troll's eyes on my back. I wasn't going to play her
games this morning. I wasn't in the mood. But then I froze over the
sink with my plate and utensils in my hand.
Then why did I have the urge to call up my wife and ask her…?
Suddenly, my phone rang in my pocket. I set down the dishes and
pulled it out as fast as I could.
“Hello?” I asked.
“Nikkita-kun, we need to talk,” Mai said in a whisper on the other
line. My heart and my stomach sank.
