Kiya sat in her hut in the great oak in Anthrowood. She sat near the window on an overstuffed chair that had been given to her. She sighed softly as she watched birds zip from tree branch to tree branch. After a while, she pushed herself to her feet and walked out. She walked to the porch and leaned against the railing, looking down at the village. The cool breeze lifted her hair and Kiya lifted her face to it. She could smell winter in the air and knew that in a few weeks time, there will be snow on the ground.

It had been a month since the battle at Riverside and there had been no sign or hearing of Aubrey. Keioke said that it may be years until they heard of him again. The Shadow dragon would want to be forgotten and need time to heal his broken pride and body. Kiya didn't care though. When he came, he came and she would be ready for him. In the mean time, they were dealing with the orc raids in the north and bring the werewolves back over from the Dead Lands. Kiya had to heal this land again and she will do it, as long as there was breath in her body.

Kiya heard footsteps behind her and she turned to see Reiku coming behind her. He was dressed for travel and had a pack on his back. Kiya bite her lip, trying to fight back tears without success. No matter who she was, she couldn't stop her feelings. She watched as he dropped his pack near the steps down. He then walked over to her and pulled her into his arms. Kiya couldn't hold it in anymore and let out her grief.

“I know,” Reiku said softly, holding her tightly.

“I don't want you to go,” she sobbed into his tunic. She breathed in the scent of him, feeling the texture of his soft leather tunic against her cheek. She didn't know when she was gong to see him again. She was afraid that he wasn't going to come back.

“You know that I have to,” Reiku said, stroking her hair gently. “I am needed up north. My kind needs me now, more than ever. And I know that you can't come with me, because you are needed here.”

“I know,” Kiya said, lifting her head off his shoulder and looking up at him. “You need to be with your people right now. I just wish…”

“I know,” Reiku said. He brushed the side of her face with his fingertips. “But I will see you again. I promise you.”

Kiya smiled through her tears and whispered, “Alright, I trust you.”
