Now I Lay Me to Sleep
October 10th, 2018.
She would love him until the end of time. They made a pact during
the last visit together. The couple had been planning this for
months. She bought the drugs online.
“These won't hurt, right? It will be like going to sleep, right?”
She looked around at the information online. She used her own money
to buy the drugs.
Now, the time had come. She wrote him a letter last week.
He was in prison on the mainland. Life for six counts of murder.
All appeals exhausted. He didn't care anymore. He was a dead man
anyway.
Still, he didn't understand it.
Why did she want to die with him? They met ten years ago. It was
happenstance, really. He was on the run from the second murder.
Maybe it was the third murder. It didn't matter. He came to the
island to escape. His plan was to lay low for a while. Keep his
head down, don't form attachments, and don't get mad. Should be
easy, right?
He wouldn't be where he was now, would he?
How did they meet exactly? It's a funny little story, really…
“Mail call.”
He lifted his head. The daily mail was making its rounds. Ah. Right
on time.
“You've got another letter.”
He waved at the guard. The letter was slid through the bars. He
caught it and stashed it under his pillow. He needed to read it
later.
----------
He waited until lights out. He reached under his pillow and opened
it.
Dear Love,
I count down to the day we will be together again. This is not
goodbye. I replay the day that we met. I wanted to die that day ten
years ago. I was going to throw myself into the sea. If I hadn't
seen you in the rain that day, I wouldn't be here. I don't know how
you found me. Somehow, it didn't matter.
The six years we were together were the best in my life. I could go
on about the ways I love you, but you already know. I know how much
you love me too. I want to say so much more, but I don't know how
to put it down here. So I will say this:
Girl stood alone in the rain.
She wanted to die.
Then she saw a savior.
Beautiful and cold.
He saved the girl.
She gave her life, heart, and soul.
They made a happy home together.
But then her savior was taken away from her.
Soon, the girl and the savior will be together again.
I believe you, by the way. I don't think you killed those women.
Even if you did, I am okay with it.
I will see you soon as your bride.
He rolled his eyes.
“Heh. Right…” He never understood what she saw in him. Too nave
for his taste. A bit too desperate to see the good in people. It
didn't matter anymore.
-----------
She had everything set up. Her death wasn't going to be a grand
affair. Just something quiet in the early hours of the morning. She
sat alone at her kitchen table. She slipped him his share of the
pills days ago. The sun hadn't even come out yet.
She twisted open the cap.
The couple shoved pills into their mouths at the same time. It was
her idea. She couldn't stand the sight of blood. He didn't
complain. It all meant the same to him.
They began swallowing faster. The bottle and the package were
empty.
She laughed and fell to the kitchen floor. Her body seized before
it went still. She lay dead on the floor in her grandmother's
wedding dress.
He was in the process of dying when the guard on duty spotted him.
He ran in and unlocked the cell.
“Medic! I need a medic in here now!”
The medics ran over to the dying prisoner. He was slipping away
fast. Foam formed at his mouth. The medics worked to get him
stable.
It took hours to get him stable enough to get him to the hospital.
He would remain in a coma for months. What no one could predict was
how this botched suicide pact was going to play into a bigger role
of how the island ended up in the state it was in or how it
threatened to swallow everything whole once the truth got out.
