Ugly Truths
Tess was woken up by a knock on her door. She looked confused in
her half-asleep state. Hm? Tess looked at the clock. She lifted her
head. Who was at her door at midnight? Tess climbed out of bed.
She looked through the peephole.
“Who is it?”
A woman stood at her door. She shivered as she moved back and
forth. Tess looked confused.
“Who are you?” she asked. The woman lifted her chin.
“I ran away from Eddie,” she said. Tess froze. She opened the door
as far as the chain would allow.
“What did you say?” she asked. Tess got a better look at the other
woman. She looked so frail. Heavy makeup hid things on her face.
Tess has seen this before.
“Do you want me to call the police?” she asked. The woman shook her
head.
“Thank you,” she whispered. The woman followed her inside.
-----------
“What's your name?”
“Beatrice.”
Tess sat down in front of her. Beatrice looked up. Despite the
makeup and thousand-year stare, she looked lovely.
“Do you need to go to the hospital?” Tess asked. She kept a knife
and her phone by her side. Beatrice shook her head.
“Okay… Why are you here?” Tess asked.
“I don't know.”
“How did you find me?” The dancer tried to sus out the situation.
Beatrice was scared of something. Maybe it was Eddie. But there was
something else.
“Your old landlady told me,” Beatrice said. “I found the address to
your old apartment in Eddie's desk.”
Tess froze. “Say what now?” Her hand reached for her knife in her
shorts' pocket. Beatrice shivered.
“He was looking for you,” she said. Shit. Was he coming here? Would
she have to move again? If Beatrice could find her here…
“Why are you here?” Tess asked. Her tone wasn't angry or
accusatory. Beatrice lifted her head.
“He's working with someone to get revenge,” she confessed. The
other woman reeled back, confused.
“What?” she asked. Beatrice broke down and told her everything she
overheard her boyfriend talking on the phone. Eddie's mood perked
up over the call. There were still some details she missed. Tess
listened quietly. She had her hand to her knife.
“And what are you going to do?” she asked at last. Beatrice shook
her head. Tess clicked her tongue. Damn it. She rubbed her
forehead.
“Fine, you can stay here tonight,” Tess said. Beatrice shook her
head.
“Oh, no. I can't.”
“Where do you plan to go?”
The other woman closed her mouth. She lowered her eyes. Tess
breathed out.
“Right…” she said. The dancer didn't need this. It would've been
better if she had just stayed in bed.
