Chapter One: Uninvited Guest
I woke up angry at that damn alarm again. It felt like I had just fallen asleep and then I had to get up? Time is definitely a bastard.I leaned over my bed and stretched an arm out to flick the switch on my blaring alarm, then lazily rolled out of bed and fell to the floor on my knees. I looked out the small window in my room to check the lighting outside; my alarm’s clock was screwing up recently and I wanted to make sure it really was dark enough to be 4:30 A.M. in Colorado. Luckily, it was. I rose slowly, my muscles arguing with me - I’d recently gone back to lifting weights and nothing was agreeing with me.
My knee popped as I shuffled into the small, cold kitchen. I glanced down at said knee thinking, ‘It’s too early for this’. 4:30 I could usually deal with - just not after the night I’d had. I shook my head clear of the previous night’s lingering strangleholds and walked to the cupboard to get a glass and a bowl. From there I swiped milk and orange juice out of the fridge and a box of cereal from the food cupboard. I poured the orange juice into the glass, the cereal and milk into the bowl and put everything away before sitting down. It was right as I was sitting down that I realized I’d forgotten to grab a spoon. Sighing, I stalked over to the drawer with my silverware and, after some rummaging, found what I was looking for. I was on my way back to my seat when I caught sight of some familiar and very unwelcome silver-blue eyes looking at me through my sliding-glass door that went onto the back deck.
“Come in,” I said, aggravation easily available in my voice.
“Tch,” Jaden said, opening the door and hopping inside, “It’s too early for you to be grumpy.”
“No,” my spoon found the stale cereal that was now turning grossly soggy and I popped the bite into my mouth and chewed before continuing, “It’s too early for you to be showing up at my place, especially since you know I don’t get my shower in until 5:00, letch.” I knew that’s why he was over so early. He’d caught me on the way to my shower a month ago when Jack, our “leader”, sent him to fetch me to see if I could identify a body. He was hoping to see me near-naked again. Why was a mystery to me.
Jaden was a lanky fellow with short, muddy-brown hair and a happy-go-lucky outlook on life. Loose blue jeans and a baggy t-shirt was all I’d seen him wear, which was probably a good thing considering he had just as many enemies after him as I did. In short, he was plain, average Joe to anybody that didn’t know him. But I did, and the only thing I saw that he had going for him was humor - just not until noon or so.
Jaden didn’t bother arguing with me; we both knew it was true.
“Hungry?” I asked, motioning to the box of cereal on the counter. Jaden took one look at my bowl, raised an eyebrow and rejected my offer. I just shrugged. Once past the whole is-stale-and-mushy bit, it was sort-of edible. Sort-of.
“Any idea what the weather’s supposed to be like?” my uninvited guest inquired. I shrugged.
“Load of help you are.”
“Hey, it’s Colorado. You really think that, even if the forecasters could get it right, the weather would really agree with us?” He couldn’t even deny that one.
“Exactly. Now shut up, sit down, and explain why you’re here so early. Though I could take a guess.” I ordered gruffly, a rough smile gracing my face before I took another soggy bite. Jaden complied, sitting down next to me. He even had the balls to place one hand on my upper thigh, though the look I shot him made his hand retreat immediately.
“You on PMS or what?” he asked. I glared at him some more. He was pretty close though. I could get irritable the week before, with an increase in appetites to boot. Yes, appetites. I ate three times as much as usual and I had one hell of an increase in the libido department. Not always a good thing when my job brought me tantalizingly close to some of the most drool-worthy humans - and non-humans - to ever make my hormones go haywire. But it was getting really close to that week.
“Ever think that maybe I just don’t appreciate you, my coworker, hitting on me?” I grumbled, draining the last swallows of milk from my bowl. I felt an embarrassing trail of the liquid spill over my mouth and onto my neck. Before I could wipe it away with the back of my hand, Jaden leaned in and licked it off. I froze.
“…Out. 25 minutes.” I demanded, pushing him away and standing once my momentary shock had passed. He started to protest, but I glared daggers at him and he fell silent and retreated outside. I locked the door to get my point across and scooted into the bathroom to shower. My irritation disappeared as I washed the night’s grime from myself and I was reluctant to leave the shower stall about 7 minutes later.
I cursed aloud when I tried pulling on black jeans and found the dampness of my skin hindering my actions, but a few minutes later I was fully dressed in solid black. My dirty blond hair was still dripping wet, but I always went to work that way. Jaden started when I opened the door and jingled my keys.
“Who’s car?” I asked, in a slightly better mood than before.
“Uh…Your’s I guess.” my partner said, slightly surprised. He started following me to my beat-up Chevy truck. It was a gas-guzzler, and the brown paint was chipping off, but it was my baby. I loved that truck. Didn’t love feeling Jaden’s gaze on my ass though.
It was going to be one of those days.
