Chapter Two: My Perfect Life~Shane~
The Perfect Privileged Rich Girl, that’s what everyone knew me as. I had the Perfect Parents, Perfect House (in the right neighborhood of course), and Perfect preppy rich school. You never really notice these things until you hit a certain age. In 3rd grade I thought it was weird that not everyone had an in-ground pool and a maid.I was the proper multi-racial girl whose father was CEO of Multicultural Groceries, whose mother volunteered for the country club, and who made straight A’s. The perfect portrait family. All through my life people have told me ‘you have everything going for you’ or ‘I wish I had your life.’ If only it could have lasted. Everything changed when I hit 13.It was a normal day in summer and I was hanging out by the pool with my ex- best friend Amber Conner. She lived in the same upscale neighborhood as me and that’s the only thing we really had in common. Also that's back when i was the brain-washed, mini me clone of my mother. If she wore a blue cashmere sweater I'd compliment it with a baby blue one. “Go get drinks, Shanna,’ Amber ordered lounging on her lawn chair in her pink bikini, soaking up the sun,’ I’m thirsty’. I played waitress to her most of the time and never really thought anything of it. My mother was proud of this little 'best friend setup' she got for me. Country Club kids were not friends with 'commoners'. I got out of the pool and wrapped my unicorn towel around me. My mother was a strong believer in girls having 'age appropriate' prints. As I walked up the back patio stairs I heard my parents screaming and yelling. That so wasn't normal for my family. I snuck through the patio door and into the kitchen. Our Old Italian chef, Maggie, shook her head and gave me a sympathetic look. I ran in the living room and hid behind my dad’s lounging chair. My Mother’s usually pale face was flushed red and my dad’s had a smug look with his arms crossed. ''What do you think your doing James!? Do you just sit around and think of ways to destroy this family!,' my mother yelled grabbing his arm.
He rolled his eyes. 'Bergitte stop being such a child,' my dad said in a calm tone. My mother did have a tendency to our do everything. Tears streamed from her eyes and he jerked his arm away. 'What was going on', I wondered.
My mother was heaving for air and she got the most maddest face I'd ever seen her have. 'I know that your cheating on me, James! I know why you never spend time with me or Shanna anymore. you'd rather be with a common whore than your own wife!' He stopped in his tracks and walked up to her.
'Whore? what Whore Bergitte? Maybe if once in a damn while you paid attention to me instead of going to 'volunteer' at your stupid Country Club meeting, you'd see I'm a man with needs!' She dropped on the nearest couch and cried her eyes out. I ran from behind the couch to face my dad. He smiled, even under the worse circumstances this man can smile.
'Daddy what's going on?', i asked naively. He hugged me and got down on his knees to get to my level. He looked me in the eyes with his deep brown eyes.
'You know what, Shane? Nothing at all. I'm going on a trip to Canada to visit my family and to check up on some of my stores, for about a week. Take care of your mother,' He said and he went upstairs to pack. I walked over to my mother and she hugged me tight. It caught me off guard because my mother isn't the huggy lovey type of mother. I pat her shoulder until i heard the door bell ring. I let go and ran through the hallway to get to the door.
Usually Belle our maid gets it but she didn't work that day. I opened it to see a blond haired, blue eyed 20 something girl holding a clip board. She grinned at me and helped herself in. ''Hi! I'm Cyn, Mr. Matta's new Secretary, you must be Shane!,' she said gripping my hand' I'm here to drive your dad to the airport'. Cyn is what became the downfall of the Matta family.
Skip ahead a couple of years and here i am now, a junior girl in high school with a broken family who hardly ever gets to see her father and her mother has issues. I lay in bed thinking about all this. Only a couple months left of school then summer break.
I climbed out of bed and looked out my window. Ahh suburbia. Trimmed green lawns, some random preppy old lady walking her dog, and the smell of chlorine.
After a quick shower i put on my normal school attire: my camo pants, band shirt, combat boots, and a hoodie. My hair is the only issue. Both my parents were cursed with curly hair which makes me have a permanent Afro. I usually spend 30 minutes just straighting one side of it. I'm too much for suburban life. I walked out in the hallway searching for whatever room my mother crashed in. Since she fired all our maid and cook I'd be a one person search.
I ran down stairs and into the kitchen to see my mother laid out on the kitchen table with a bottle of wine beside. My mother the drunk. I poured a glass of cold water and splashed it all over her face. She woke up gasping for air and fell off the table. I helped her up and she sat at the table. She looked a mess. Her hair was all over her head, her clothes wrinkled, and she smelled like bad pasta. 'Mom, coffees hot in the pot, go take a shower, and after school ill clean up the mess,' i mumbled. She looked pathetic. I threw away the wine bottle and grabbed my back pack.
''Shanna its not what you think, i just had a few drinks while i was cooking some pasta and fell asleep,' she justified trying to grasp on to what little dignity she has.
'I really don't care Bergitte, I'm sick of cleaning up after your 'drunk' messes,' i said curtly leaving the kitchen. 'By the way its Shane.' I left the out of the house and waved to my neighbor across the street as i got in my old SUV.
When i got to school it was kind of late because i decided to park and call my dad. he was on another 'business trip' and gave me some crap about coming home from California in a week. days become weeks, weeks become months. the bastard.
I went to my locker to get my art book and headed to first period when i got stopped by Danny Simmons, the rich shady jerk. 'Move Danny,' i ordered as he blocked my way looking at me through his movie star sunglasses.
'Why do you have to be such a tease Shane,' he said getting all up in my personal space. I rolled my eyes and walked past him. How i hate my school. when i walked further down the hall i was stopped by Amber Conner and her 2 lackeys.
'Shane, how convenient. I saw you talking to Danny Simmons, stay away from him, he's mine,' she said pulling down her too short cheer leading skirt. her two friends grinned holding their poms poms like they were about to go off into a cheer.
'You can have Danny, everybody knows he'll put out for any nasty thing,' I laughed looking her in the eye. She growled (i swear she did) and smiled a fake one.
'Whatever, Shane,' she said walking away. I felt pretty good about myself until i felt a pom pom hit my head. I turned around to see her and her friends laughing at me. I walked up to her and smacked her across her face. She gasped and smacked me. I wasn't about to let her go away without me roundhouse kicking her to the face. I jumped on her back and started beating the 'School spirit' out of her when next thing i know i feel someone push me back. Principal Waters. 'Detention Ms. Matta!'
So a couple of hours, trips to the office, and phone calls later i walk into detention. Its nothing new, I've been in detention most of the year. I look around and see Mr. Gerald my History teacher behind a desk reading the newspaper and about 6 kids usual who are in the same 1 hour boat with me. I walk down the aisle and notice a thin boy with bright green eyes looking at me. he's new...and in my normal seat. I've never been on to be a bully but what the heck.
I walk up to him like I'm big and tough and say 'Who the hell are you wimpy boy? And you're in my seat." He looks up and gives me the weirdest look. little did i know this kid would change my sick twisted life.
