The minute Hanz stepped onto the Gorlitz estate, he felt uncomfortable. He didn’t like the feeling the place gave him. The estate felt like a prison, complete with high walls and numerous guards. His discomfort grey steadily as he continued his approach. He knew of the Gorlitz family’s past. At one point, they had been renown dragon slayers. But now, they were nobles, and he was protected under a complicated treaty.
There was another reason he felt a surge of dread as he passed poorly training guards. The duke had a well known habit of collecting rarities. Human or otherwise. It was a place Hanz has sworn to avoid. In fact, he was already counting the hours until he could breech the border to the south and escort the Dark priest to wherever they were heading.
Hanz also noted that Mikal was just as leery of the place. As they neared the doors, black gauntleted hands caught his arm. “Can’t we just go around? This human….I have bad feelings about this place.” he knew Hanz would continue on, no matter what he said, but he was going to try. “Knight…let’s go around. That place stinks of captivity.”
“I know it does. I like this estate as much as you do. But the Celestial told us to come here. So here we shall go.”
“We are here, Hanz! You don’t honestly enjoy being under the celestial’s control do you? When you know what it’s like to be a free knight.”
“I…I can’t answer that. Now, we must go. Duty comes before dreams and speculations.” The knight continued, though his own words milled in his mind. Truly, he did dream of the freedoms he once had had. Truly, he sometimes wished that the great Orihalcon had never seen the promise in him and mentioned him to the Celestial. That he had never become Silver Dragoon to help fill the void Sir Rodriguez had left hen he sacrificed himself to become the book they now hunted. He just wished that the priest hadn’t figured out his secret desires so easily. Hanz knew by those thoughts alone, he wasn’t the Knight he should be. His Silver was starting to tarnish noticeably now.
He nearly jumped a foot in the air when the hand caught his shoulder. A hand went to his sword then relaxed when he connected hand with the body of Mikal. “Don’t do that. I nearly killed you.”
Mikal shook his head. “Jumpy, aren’t we? Thinking? Hanz…what if I told you there might be a way to be free again? A way to erase the tattoos and reverse the oaths.”
Hanz stared into the distance. “I would say you were crazy and thinking traitorous thoughts. I would also say that I’d give nearly anything to be a Free Knight again. To decide for myself where to go and who to serve. I’d say I’m sick of having to go to the courts and play those annoying games of his when I could be down here, defending the weak.”
“Hanz Silvertalon, that is the most intelligent thing I have ever heard from you. Silver…you and I are a lot alike, I think I know of a way. But you’ll have to be my personal knight for a while. Can you do that? Be my knight and protect me when my magic and my prayers are not enough? Until I find a way to free us both?”
The Knight paused for a long moment before he answered. “Say nothing ill of the humans again and I will strike this deal with you.”
The black priest nodded. “I will not speak ill of your beloved humans again in front of you.” he was then caught by surprise when Hanz assumed one knee before him, sword drawn, catching the reflection of the sunlight, hiding that Mikal had none himself. He blinked a the ancient words that fell from his fellow Dragoon’s lips. The promise of a Knight of the Old Code. A rarity, even by today’s standards. He had not figured that into his calculations. That this silver knight adhered to the old Code. “Rise Silvertalon. Rise. I accept your pledge. Now, accept mine. I will not rest until I see myself…and you…free to do as we please once more.”
Hanz stood, putting the blade back into it’s place. “Now, we can go? I know you don’t like this estate, but I am hungry. We are both tired. I don’t wish to go into the Vampire Kingdom tired and hungry. I won’t fight as well that way.”
Agreed. Let’s get this farce started, so we can get it over with sooner. Perhaps there will be pretty girls to look at as well.”
“I thought you didn’t like Humans.”
“I don’t, but I’ve seen your face long enough. I heard tales that the Duke has some real beauties stashed away.” Those words made Hanz start straightening out his hair and re-adjusting his armor. He was a well known flirt, and he refused to show up a mess in front of pretty ladies. “I hear he even has acquired a servant from the first child of the Princess Aurora. That I must see. The unwanted children of the Beauty that Slept.”
Hanz remained silent. He saw no novelty in such a thing. He just wanted to see a pretty face before going into a land of many pretty, but ultimately deadly faces. Still, he did admit he was rather curious. He’s heard that the Leider family women took after their famous ancestor in looks. “Let’s just go. It’s nearly dark. I don’t relish playing with night stalkers this early in our mission.”
With that, the two finally entered the estate. Ignoring the bustle of servants and going straight into a very short audience with a very perturbed Heinrik Gorlitz and his very young grandchild, Eric. Hanz’s attention, however was pulled towards a young maid, large with child. Petite, blonde, with the prettiest blue eyes he had ever seen. He was just certain that her child would be just as beautiful as herself.
