Chapter Four

He looked disapprovingly down on the unconscious girl, then back at the blonde who was casually brushing dirt off his clothes.
“What?!” He asked innocently, catching the horse's gaze. Shaking his mane, the creature settled beside the girl to await her return.

Her dreams were of darkness. Just, darkness. She wandered in the shadows, looking for something. Which surprised her; she didn't know what she was searching for. But she knew she had to keep looking. The darkness was taking shape as she walked. Or was she running? Dark columns - or were they people? - lining the way. Something was calling to her. A flame appeared. It's golden light flickered over her, warmth spreading outwards. She reached towards it, starting as a shard of ice appeared beside it.
“Alsentia…” A voice breathed in her ear. “Come back to me.”

The light was harsh against her eyes. The noises unfamiliar. The smell of damp earth clung to her nostrils. Hushed conversation drew her attention. Blinking against the morning light, she turned her head. She lay in a small clearing bordered by trees and small shrubs. To her left, a blonde boy and a silver haired boy sat in quiet conversation. Both were slender, but well-built. Toned, but not overly muscular. As she shifted to see better, two sets of violet eyes landed on her. She froze.
“Good morning little filly.” The silver boy tilted his head towards her as he rose from his seated position. Behind him, the other snorted.
“Smooth, Estyrn, real smooth.”
The one named Estyrn said nothing, just approached Alsentia slowly. She shuffled backwards, fear freezing her insides as he approached.
“Who are you? How did I get here? Why am I here? What…”
“So many questions little one.” Estyrn cut her off, crouching beside her. “Surely you remember our little journey here?”
Alsentia frowned.
“What are you talking about? I was riding and… My horse! Where is he?”
“My dear Estyrn, it appears she doesn't recognise you without your tail.” The golden male appeared over Estyrn's shoulder, highly amused. “Perhaps a demonstration is in order?”
“Later, brother. For now there are more important matters to be attended to.”
The blonde snorted.
“You're no fun Estyrn. You never allow time to play.”
“Whereas you spend your all your time playing while I work.”
“Now isn't the time for this. Do we trust her here alone while we're gone?”
Estyrn gazed at Alsentia for a long second, and she shrank under his gaze.
“No.” He said eventually. “Bind her and appoint a guard.”
The other nodded, rising to his feet.

Her arms hurt. Her back hurt. Her throat hurt. Her neck was beginning to hurt. She could hear voices from around her, but couldn't see anyone. The sun was beginning to climb higher in the sky, and the two males still hadn't returned. After her arms had been bound and she was left, she'd tried screaming. She screamed until her throat felt raw and on fire. No one came. She'd tried calling to the guards posted around the clearing. They ignored her.
“Help me.” She breathed into the earth.
“So you're still here.”
She managed to turn her head enough to see the blonde standing nearby.
“Where else is she to go?” Estyrn appeared from behind him, crossing the clearing and vanishing back out of sight.
“Good point.”
“Why am I here?” Alsentia whispered.
“Because of your Father.” The blonde leant casually on a tree trunk. “Call it persuasion to see our way.”
“Our way?”
“You have not realised by now?” Estyrn had reappeared, holding a bag in his hands.
“Realised?”
“We are the rebels your country is so determined to `protect' themselves against.”
Alsentia froze.
“Werewolves.”
The two males shared an amused glance.
“Yes, and no.”
“What do you mean?” Confusion raged in her brain. The blonde just smiled slowly.
“That's no concern of yours. Yet.”
“Then may I know who you are?”
The blonde raised an eyebrow.
“I believe you already know my brother Estyrn.” He extended his arm with a flourish in the silver male's direction. “And as for me, you may call me Masye. I believe we encountered on the train here.”
Images flooded into Alsentia's mind like a wildfire.
“I remember.” She breathed.
“Good.” Estyrn interrupted. “Now, information.”
