Chapter 1
A Beginning

"Shit!" David Chadrick yelled, as the hot liquid sloshed across the front of his pristine new Gap cardigan. He sighed as he sat down his coffee and brief case, and dashed upstairs to his room to change once more. It was his first day of teaching at the Prestigious Roosevelt Academy, and his first day jitters were already reeking havoc on his nerves and manifesting through clumsiness.

He'd already knocked over a plant, poured lemonade into his cereal instead of milk, and now he'd poured coffee all over his new sweater in his haste to get out the door. Sighing he buttoned up the last buttons on his less impressive sweater he had purchased at Kohls last year.

He laid his forehead against the cool surface of his bathroom mirror, took a few deep breaths and then turned and headed back downstairs.

This time he made it outside with no more accidents, and sloshed across the lawn to his small silver Buick. The sky was gray and overcast, and from the sogginess of his lawn he guessed it had rained last night. He jostled over to his car, and slid inside. He had to try a few times before his engine purred (more like growled, snarled, and sputtered) to life. It was a thirty minute drive from his house to the school, which gave plenty of time for his antique heater, to blast warmth throughout the small space. The small two door vehicle had belonged to his grand-father while he was in college, and so David found solace in the snorting, groaning old car.

Finally he ambled into the parking lot, passing all the student reserved slots (filled with BMWs, Porches, and Mercedes) and found his way to the front section for teachers (conversely filled with Toyotas, Kias, and Volkswagens). He cut the engine once he had parked in the spot labeled 'D. Chadrick' a feeling of importance slightly lifting his mood, he had his own reserved named spot, imagine that.

He wrestled his key out of the ignition, and slipped it into his breast pocket, grabbed his briefcase, and followed the herd of giggling students into the school.

The inside of Roosevelt Academy was bright, colorful, and OCD clean, which was expected since this was an elite private academy. The walls were white, and smelled suspiciously of antiseptic, the florescent lights in the ceiling lit the hallway better then the sun on its best day, and everywhere he looked there were students, ridiculously shiny, wealthy looking students smoothing out their designers jackets, fixing their ties, and running their hands through neatly coifed hair, and then a few lockers down, huddled into himself, stood a small dark haired boy pulling books from his locker as inconspicuously as possible, not that it mattered seeing as he seemed to be pretty much ignored.

It was like his high school years all over again, not that he had went to a high school anywhere near as nice as this, but the experience was pretty much the same. The cliques, the party, the fights, the drama, and the high school romance.

David paused and reached hastily into his pants pocket and pulled out a crumpled sheet of paper. "Darn washing machine," he mumbled as he attempted to read the faded blue numbers he had hastily written down. He supposed he could go all the way back down to the principals office, but by then he wasn't sure if he'd make it into for his advisory period-

"Excuse me, you look lost."

David looked up into a beaming face, the speaker was female, and seemed to be a teacher here as well, though it was hard to tell considering the girls at this school looked so much older then regular teenagers.
"I'm Lizzy Dawson, second year English teacher, you must be Mr. Chadrick." she said warmly. David realized that she did not fit his schema of an English teacher at all. For one she was tall and thin, not short and plump, and she had sun kissed skin and rosy cheeks.

"Oh hi, yeah that's me, you can just call me David," He replied and briefly debated whether or not to hold out his hand, he quickly threw out that notion, when she grabbed his hand and wrapped her slim fingers around his wrist.

"What's this you have here? A room number?" She asked sliding the slip of paper through his fingers and peering at the unintelligible script. After a moment her eyebrows shot up and she laughed. "Oh I see, well your class is near mine, I could take you if you liked."

David found himself nodding, and then in complete embarrassment found himself walking behind Claudia, feeling distinctly like a lost child. He studied the woman in front of him, she looked like just a regular college student to him, but he supposed she was dressed pretty conservative, in her long white cardigan, long cotton shirt, and black flare out pants, none of which fit tightly to her or gave any sort of hint or mention to her shape (or lack there of). David was so caught up in his thoughts he almost did not see her stop outside room 208.

"Here you are, I'm in room 203 if you have any questions, I sincerely hope you have a good day Mr. Chadrick."

"Of course, thank you so much, I'll see you around." David said and then quickly hurried into the room, surprised to see students already there, he guessed he was later than he original thought.

David was not sure whether he should have felt relieved or offended, when not one student looked up as he made his way into the classroom. Groups of students were stationed throughout the room, each group discussing what they had done for the summer break...all but that same solitary student David had passed in the hallway. From what David heard it seemed as if all the students had gone to at least one other country over the break.

David sat down his briefcase, and turned towards the smart board, after staring helplessly at it for a few moments he gave up, and decided to use the white board beside it, he picked up the dry erase marker and wrote down the first assignment for his advisory class, and then sank down into his chair, already tired from the morning events, and the day had just begun.

A short while later the bell rang and the students filed into their seats, David stood up and walked to the board.

"Hello I'm Mr. Chadrick, I'll be your advisory teacher for the rest of this year. As you know Advisory works in two ways, on alternate days you will have classwork or a study period, I decided to begin Mondays as classwork days," he paused as the class groaned as one and then continued, "and so your first assignment is to stand up and tell the class what you did for the summer."

"How about I do you instead," A girl in the back whispered loudly to her friends. David sighed.

This was quickly turning into a very long day, and it wasn't even 10:30.
