She looked up, obviously not listening to a word he said. The sun was in the lower in the sky and made her skin itch slightly. It was just warm enough for her to be uncomfortable but not be an excuse to retreat into the cool interior of the coffee house. Not that it was cool or dark in that noisy, crowded shop anyway. It was late enough for the soccer moms to need their afternoon coffee and so the shop was full of sticky seven year olds and complaining preteens.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Fine.” She answered not even bothering to lie creatively.

She glanced around her again. Something felt off, something was wrong and someone was too close for comfort. He watched her intently, not calling her out on the lie. He saw her roll her eyes in annoyance as a group of giggling teenage girls approached a good looking boy sitting in the shade.

He chuckled softly. “Don't you want to go meet him too?” he asked her teasingly.

She threw him a sharp look annoyance laced with friendly affection. “Yeah, sure. I think that if he wanted to meet me, he'd be walking over to me.”

He laughed lightly enjoying the few moments he had with her.

“I've got to go.”

“Why?”

She didn't answer.

“Where are you going?”

No answer. She smiled at him reassuringly. Their time together was always over too soon for his preference. She stood, gathered her things and prepared to leave quickly.

“Bye.”

“Bye.” He said watching her walk away. When she was a good twenty feet away he added, “Be careful.”

The guy sitting in the shadows looked up, having dismissed his fan club. He watched the boy's reaction as a blur rushed towards him and the girl who had been sitting with leaned over his shoulder and whispered in his ear, “I always am.”

The guy looked away and picked up his coffee again, “Here's to looking at you.” He said taking a sip.
