Chapter Seventeen: Meet the Parents

“I hope they like me…” Zade sighed, glancing at his nervous girlfriend. She sat with her shoulders hunched anxiously, her legs crossed, fidgeting, her hands clasping onto the end of her shirt as though her life depended on it. Mixed with her dislike of airplanes, Ryleigh's worries about their impending visit was doing massive damage on the poor girls nerves. Glancing out the window every now and then, she replayed the conversation she and Zade had had a week before, leading to their trip. The last thing she'd expected him to say after getting off the phone with his mother was “My Mom and step-dad want to meet you; would you mind flying out to Alberta with me for a few days?”

Ryleigh had initially been overjoyed and excited; she'd heard a lot about Zade's mother from him, and looked forward to meeting the older woman. However, as soon as she'd set foot on the plane that would take them to their destination, nervousness had hit her hard.

“Ryleigh…” Zade sighed, taking a hold of his girlfriends hand and giving it a gentle squeeze, “would you relax? They're gonna love you,” he grinned when she blushed, nodding slightly.

“But…” he pulled her closer and shut her up with a quick kiss, smirking when she simply stared dazedly off into space.

“Just don't worry about it, alright;” it was Zade's turn to blush as he glanced away, “I'm just happy you're going to meet them…”

“Awwww,” Ryleigh giggled, leaning against her boyfriends shoulder and nuzzling the top of her head against his neck, “that's sweet of you. I promise I'll try and stop worrying.”

Zade smiled down at her, resting his head against hers and closing his eyes, drifting off shortly after. It was another hour before they finally arrived in Alberta, both jumping awake when the pilot spoke over the intercom of the plane.

Standing and grabbing their carry on bags, Zade gave Ryleigh's hand one last reassuring squeeze, “Ready?”

Swallowing thickly, she nodded hesitantly, “As ready as I'll ever be,”

Zade smiled once, then turned and followed the other passengers with Ryleigh close behind him. The blonde kept her eyes focused on her feet, mentally berating herself for acting so jittery. She was happy that Zade wanted her to meet his parents, and overjoyed that his mother and step-father wanted to meet her as well. The overall situation just had her panicking beyond belief.

Would they like her? Would she like them? Would they approve of she and Zade dating?

Millions of questions raced through her mind in the few seconds it took Ryleigh to descend the steps leading away from the airplane, and she hardly even noticed when they reached the pavement of the ground. Seeing she had drifted off mentally, Zade rolled his eyes and grabbed her hand, dragging her off towards the airport terminal to find his mother and step-father. Ryleigh relented, allowing him to pull her through the masses of people gathered inside the main building, gazing around nervously while chewing at her bottom lip.

“Zade! Over here!” Ryleigh gasped at the call, her boyfriend suddenly perking and dragging her through the crowd at top speed, eventually letting go of her hand to embrace his mother.

Ryleigh watched from behind him, gazing at the woman Zade called mother from over his shoulder. Sarah Terence had long brown hair and kind blue eyes, the older woman a few inches shorter then herself. The red head pulled away to shake hands with his step-father, Jake a few inches shorter then his step-son. Finally, Zade's gaze returned to the blonde girl, Ryleigh immediately tensing up when the older couple swung their heads to look over as well.

“Mom, Jake, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend, Ryleigh Owen,” he said proudly, stepping up beside her to kiss her cheek and slip an arm around her waist, pulling her tightly against his side. Ryleigh flushed, giving the two a hesitant smile.

“H-hi,” she managed shakily, the two adults glancing at each other knowingly. Sarah stepped forward, smiling brightly at the younger woman.

“It's great to finally get to meet you, Ryleigh. Zade's told us so many wonderful things about you that I couldn't wait to meet you myself,” she gushed, bubbly with happiness. Jake came to stand beside his wife, casting a wry smile to the two young adults.

“Yes, you're all he's been talking about lately. Seems you've got our Zade hooked, young lady,” both Ryleigh and Zade flushed, the red head coughing and looking away while the blonde tried to think of a reply.

“It's nice to meet you to, Mrs. Terence…” Sarah clicked her tongue, shaking her head and pulling the surprised woman into a hug.

“I don't want to hear any of this `Mrs. Terence' stuff, you hear me? Call me Sarah!” she gushed, Ryleigh simply nodding in slight shock. Slowly, a bright smile formed on her lips as well, finding Sarah's happiness to be contagious.

“Well, I am really happy to get to meet you both,” she admitted, “Zade's told me a lot about you guys as well; especially about your famous cooking…”

Sarah burst out in a laugh, tugging Ryleigh along with her while the men went to get their luggage from the carousal.

“Well then, I'll just have to treat you to a home cooked, family meal then!”

“I'm so full…” Ryleigh groaned, flopping face first onto the bed of Zade's room, prepared to pass out right then and there. She'd been surprised when Sarah had said she was allowed to stay in Zade's room with him, but figured it was due to the fact that she was an easy going parent and trusted them. Zade snickered at his girlfriend's actions, moving over to her with a smirk and pouncing, Ryleigh shrieking when his fingers suddenly attacked her sides.

“S-stop!” she managed between laughing, her feet kicking out wildly, her arms flailing in a useless attempt to throw him off. Zade simply smirked and tickled her more ruthlessly, keeping her pinned to the bed using his body weight. Ryleigh squealed at the merciless attack to her sides, bucking up in a vain attempt to knock her boyfriend off. The action caused their hips to brush together briefly, Zade stiffening and pulling away from her suddenly, leaving Ryleigh staring at his back in confusion.

“Zade?” she questioned, sitting up and reaching out to touch his shoulder, feeling him stiffen more at her touch. Ryleigh frowned, “What's wrong?”

“Nothing!” he exclaimed quickly- a little too quickly for Ryleigh- and turned his head to flash her a quick grin, “I'm going to take a shower; you change and I'll be out in a bit, alright?”

Ryleigh nodded numbly, Zade turning and heading into the connecting, all the while mentally cursing `those damn hormones'. Sighing and shrugging off his weird behavior as feeling weird being in his mothers house again, Ryleigh got off the bed and moved to where she'd set her suitcase, digging through the contents to find a suitable pair of pajama's. Locating said garments, she stripped to her undies and quickly dawned the blue pants and tank-top and tossed her used clothing into the suitcase. Jumping back onto the bed, Ryleigh immediately snuggled under the covers, closing her eyes and waiting for Zade to come back.

Eventually, the red head returned, toweling off his still damp hair, dressed in a pair of pajama pants. Glancing at the bed, Zade smiled when he say that Ryleigh had drifted off, tossing the towel over the back of his desk chair and walked over, climbing in beside her. Gently pulling her close and resting his chin on top of her head, Zade drifted off quickly.

“So, how did you and Zade meet?”

“Well… it's a little complicated,” Ryleigh replied, taking a sip from her Ice Cap. The two women sat outside a small Tim Hortens, their shopping bags left in the car. The last day of their visit before they flew back to Ontario, Ryleigh found that she already considered Sarah to be the mother she'd never had. She'd been more then welcoming and friendly the entire time the two university students had been staying there, and the two women had decided to spend their last day shopping.

Sarah cast the younger women an amused glance, “Zade's been adamant in not telling me, so I'm asking you,” Ryleigh sighed, flushing as she remembered the incident that had occurred that day.

“Well, we met when he transferred into my painting class…”

“That's not bad…”

“No, it wasn't the actual first meeting that was bad,” Ryleigh laughed, putting a hand on her forehead, “after class, I realized I'd forgotten my bag in the room and went back to get it and, well… Zade was there and he kinda… pinned me to the wall and I… may have… hit him in a very sensitive place with my knee…” expecting Sarah to be mad, Ryleigh jumped when the brunette burst out laughing, bending over and clutching her stomach.

“You… kneed him… oh that's just too good!” she managed between laughs, casting the surprised blonde a wide grin, “Zade's always been a bit forward, but to have a girl refuse him! Oi! I wish I'd been there to see his face!

“Sarah!” Ryleigh gasped, now finding her laughter infectious, “he just startled me! And someone we ended up together anyways…” a contented smile settled on the now dazed girl's face, Sarah smiling fondly at her son's girlfriend.

“Come on, we'd better get back so you and Zade can get ready to head back home,” she commented, standing, Ryleigh following suit and heading towards the car. Soon enough, they were back at the house and the two had packed and had everything ready to go. At the airport, hugs and good byes were exchanged quickly as the two young adults loaded their luggage and headed out towards the plane. On their way up the stairs to the plane, Sarah grinned suddenly, getting an idea. Jake eyed his wife suspiciously, already knowing she had something mischievous in mind.

ZADE, RYLEIGH!” she shouted, grinning like a cat the entire time, “I WANNA SEE SOME GRANDKIDS SOON, YOU HEAR ME?!”

“MOM!”

“SARAH!”
