The Gift of Immortality: The Vault
Chapter 1: Death
It's amazing how much a person’s life can change, but sometimes what are more amazing are the events that can cause the change. For most it's either meeting someone new, moving away, or getting a new job, but for a select few it can also be death, not the death of a friend or family member, but there own. Now some of you maybe thinking what bigger change to a life can you have than the end of it, well your about to see.
We begin this by taking a look at the mundane life of Michael Anderson, your pretty much normal eighteen year old, just finished his A Levels and now preparing for University. His long term achievable goals were to go though University, get a decent job and have a few years of fun, then get married, go for a career, raise some kids and grow old, a pretty much boring life in his opinion. He was an optimist but also a realist, he wanted to be able to help the world but also knew that unless some higher force intervened this was the best he could do. Today was not really different from any other day; he was on his way home from a friend’s house reading an article in the paper "Two men attacked by a large animal. Two men are being treated for large bite wounds to the shoulder and legs which were caused by a creature that they describe as being 6ft tall with deformed dog like features. This is the third attack by a creature of a similar description and police are now on the lookout for any suspicious animals at night." Michael kept reading complete unaware to the world around him as he made his way home.Remember those events that can cause a change, well a very unexpected one was about to happen to Michael, as he never expected the driver of the car 20ft away from him to have a heart attack or 5 minutes later to hear the siren of a ambulance as he slowly fade into unconsciousness as he lay in the middle of the road........In an ER somewhere in London.......Medical staff swarmed around the body as the heart monitor's beeping slowed and became a single tone.
"Get me the De-fib." The doctor call as a nurse handed him the paddles.
"Clear."
"Clear."
The nurse check the equipment and sighed. "No response."
The doctor put the paddles down and looked at his watch.
"Alright , call it, time of death is..."
It's amazing how much a persons life can change, but sometimes what’s more amazing are the events that can cause the change, for a select few it can be death, not the death of a friend or family member, but there own. Michael opened his eyes to see nothing but a glowing white, he turn his head around to see his surroundings but all he could see was the same glowing white. He tried to move but couldn't feel his legs or his arms. It was then that his noticed the odd voices around him.
"He is suitable"
"Yes, he shall go back"
With that the voices seem to drift away as did everything else until all was black. He awoke again, this time in a darkened room. He looked around and but in the darkness all he could make out was that it was some kind of hospital room. He sat up to get a better look around, then felt a sudden chill and noticed that the only thing he had on was the sheet that covered him. It was then that he remembered all that had happened, from when the car hit him to the tone of the machine announcing his death. That’s when he realized what room he was in, a morgue. He shot up in shock at his sudden realization and continued to look around in disbelief, trying to get his mind around the fact that he had died but failing.
I have to get out of her. I have to get home.
He wrapped the sheet around him and started walking down the hall, looking from room to room for any clothes he could use. As it was late at night, the lights were off and there didn't seem to be anybody around. Fortunately, a changing room was left unlocked and had a spare set of clothes in it.
A male nurse must of left them
He quickly put the clothes on and made his way out of the hospital and onto the streets. He started walking home, or at least where he thought his way home was, trying to figure out what exactly what had happened.
I couldn't of died, could I? It just doesn't make sense
He continued to think as he made his way to familiar streets he started to get the feeling that he wasn't alone. It didn't bother him for a while, until he started to hear foot steps, and they weren't normal foot steps neither. It sounded like the feet were padded, like dogs feet but heavier. Starting to feel scared he quickly turned around and saw...nothing, no-one was there. Thinking he might just be having a nervous breakdown he continued on his way. He didn't hear the foot steps again for about thirty minutes, and this time they were louder, as if they were right behind him. He turned around and saw two large things, which would best be described as dogs but had more of a human figure to them and were less hairy. They also seemed to be standing on their hind legs and stare at him as if he were a steak. So Michael, scared out of his wits, did the only thing you can do in this kind of situation, he ran as fast a humanly possible, with the beasts close behind him. He ran blindly down the road not really caring where he was going as long as the things behind him weren't there. But if he had been in a better state of mind he would have noticed that he was running faster then he ever had before and was not even tiring. He turned a corner and ran into a dead end and quickly spun around to see if the creatures were still behind him. The beasts lumbered around the corner, closing in on him. One seemed to get impatient and lunged and Michael, who reacted merely on instinct and grabbed the creature’s claw and flipped the thing over his shoulder and into the wall. The second creature charged at him and he spun around and quickly dodged his attack and spin kicks it in the head. Surprised by his sudden skills at fighting, he didn’t notice that the abominations had already gotten back up and went for him. Michael barely had time to react and quickly put his arms up to protect him as the beast furiously slashed at him.Just as Michael thought it was over…
“Look out below!” Cried a voice from above.
Michael looked up in time to see a fist land on the attacking creatures head and stun it. He looked on as the second creature jumped on the man’s back and he merely grabbed it by the neck and threw it off him as if it was a puppy.
“Is that the best you got you ugly mutts?”
Finally getting a good look at the man, Michael saw that he had a long black coat and had some kind of body armour on underneath, and because it was dark all he could see of his face was that he had a goatee. He looked down to see that the first beast had gotten up and charged at the guy but he just jumped out of the way and kicked it in the back. It got back up and looked at its companion and both started to retreat.
“I don‘t think so.”
The guy reached into his coat and pulled out a gun, flips a small lever on it, and fires a shot into one of the creatures backs, killing it. The other quickly looked back and carried on running. The guy turns around and looks at Michael, and then inhales deeply through his nose, as if smelling the area. He walks up to Michael and offers him a hand, who cautiously took it.
“Didn‘t anybody ever tell you not to go out on a full moon after a sighting?” He asked as if it was common knowledge.
“What?” Michael asked, not quite understanding.
“I guess you must be new to this then, anyway what’s your name?”
“M-Michael, Michael Anderson”
“Okay Mike I’m Johnathan, Johnathan Klawvious, but you can just call me John. Anyway how long?”
“How long? What do you mean?”
“How long ago did you die?”
“WHAT!" Michael stared at him hoping that John was joking, but deep down he knew he wasn't. "No I couldn’t! Wait, What’s today’s date.”
John thought for a second before answering.
“March 17th”
Michael remembered reading that date on the paper before the accident. “That means it happened today, it happened this morning.”
“Damn that quick, anyway you look like you could use some help and some answers, if so follow me.”
John turned and started to walk away, Michael thought about it for a moment, then followed him. As they were walking John looked back for a moment and stopped.
“Crap, I was hoping he wouldn‘t change back until morning.”
Michael turned to see what he was talking about and saw that the body of the thing that he shot wasn’t there anymore, instead and man was lying there with a bullet hole in his back.
“What were those things?”
“Werewolves” John answered
“WHAT!" he cried "You mean they’re real?”
“Afraid so.”
“But he’s normal now?”
“That happens after they die" he said as if it was an everyday event. "I was hoping to reach them before they changed and cure them, but I was too late.”
John walked out of the alley and turned right, and went up to a black car parked at the corner and unlocked the door, got in and Mike quickly followed.During the drive Michael was very quiet, tying to absorb everything that had just happened in the last 24 hours. John would occasionally glance at the kid to see if he was okay. After about half an hour, the car stops in a half filled car park and John and Michael get out of the car. Michael look around and saw that it was a residential car park for a pretty expensive looking flat.“You live here?” Michael asked, not able to keep some of the wonder out of his voice.
“Most of the time”
Michael gave him a funny look and decided just to follow him as he went to the entrance and swiped something in front of the panel next to the door to open it. They went to the elevator and went up to the top floor, which didn’t seem to have many occupants. John opened the door to his flat and turned on the light and his coat on a hook next to the door. Michael slowly followed him in and his suspicions that this place was expensive were confirmed, the place was big and it was just the main room, he saw a hallway leading of somewhere, most likely bathroom and bedrooms, and a panel in the wall a few feet away from a door which he guessed lead to the kitchen.
“Have a seat" he motioned to the armchair opposite the one he sat down in. "Do you want something to eat?”
Michael shook his head in reply. “No thanks, I‘m fine”
John noticed as Michael sat down that he still had a slightly dazed expression, so he decided to just get on with it.
“Okay straight to the answers then. So where do you want to start?”
“W-what happened..." He stop as he thought of a more important question. "No, what am I?”
“Well, you did die that I‘m certain and your, well, what you are doesn‘t have an exact name, your just known as Immortals.”
“Immortals.”
“Yeah" He nodded "As in no longer bound to the mortal laws of life and death.”
“Are you saying I can‘t die or that I‘m dead?” He asked not liking were this was heading.
“No, your not dead" He shook his head before he continued. "But your not exactly human either. A human can‘t live forever, so to become immortal you have to become something more. That’s what happened to you when you died, you came back as you are now. However you can die, for good this time, its just very difficult. For instance you won‘t get any older than you are now or get seriously ill, and things like get shot or stabbed won‘t kill you either, but if you get decapitated you’re a goner.”
“You mean like in that film Highlander?” Michael asked seeing the similarities.
“Sort of, but when I say you become more I mean it. You may have not noticed but your strength, speed, everything has increased, any injury you get will instantly heal, and the sudden ability to know martial arts. There are also a few physical improvements that I‘ll have to show you later.”
Michael thought over everything that happened after he woke up in that hospital and remembered that he was faster when he was running from those werewolves.
I must of cleared three streets in record time and I did feel stronger when I was fighting those things. “So what happens now?”
“Well you have a chose, you can try to go back to your life as you are, but you‘ll have to hide your abilities and eventually disappear before anybody clocks on that your not human. Or you step into our world and find out what’s really going on around you and maybe make a difference or you can become human again and live the rest of your life how you want.”
“Wait, you can change me back?”
“Yeah, its pretty simple really, you see human are pretty basic creatures and its pretty easy for them to become other things, like werewolves, vampires, and all sorts of demons and half-breeds.”
“Sorry but are you saying that vampires and all that really exist?”
“Yeah, were do you think all those myths and stories came from? Anyway as I was saying, humans are easy to change but once they have they can‘t change any further most of the time and can only go back. In your case if a lycan, or werewolf to you, or a vampire bit you their venom would turn you back into a human and not into one or them”
“You would let a werewolf or a vampire bite me?” Michael asked, afraid to be thrown the wolves once again.
“What." John let out a light chuckle at the suggestion. "No, I have a serum which is a mixture of their two venoms.”
Michael sighed in relief, he had already had enough experience with werewolves to last him a good while.
“Anyway I’m going to get something to eat and leave you to your decision.” John said as he got up and went to the kitchen and left Michael with his thoughts.
I could be normal again, but do I want to, I mean I haven’t even discovered all that I can do now and maybe I can help people and make a difference like John said. But what about my family, I can’t just leave them like that, it’d crush them. What should I do?Wait a minute, maybe I can ease out of it, yeah carry on with my life and slowly tell them that I have to go, I hope this works?
With his mind made up, the young immortal waited for John who walked in with two large sandwiches on a plate and one held in his mouth.
“I‘ve decided that I want to stay like this and find out fully what’s happened to me, but can‘t just leave my family and friends, I want to leave them slowly.”
“That’s understandable, I mean you’ve got at least five or ten years until anybody begins to suspect anything. Now, if your going back home I‘d better call the minders to take care of the details.”
John swallowed the last of his sandwich and got a mobile out if his pocket and began to call someone.
“Who are the minders and what details?” Asked Michael.
“Well after you died where did you wake up?”
“A…morgue.” He replied with a slight chill in his voice.
“That means that you‘ve officially been announced dead and your families probably been informed, so if you turn up at your house you‘ll properly scare your family to death. Minders are people who arrange it so that certain events either never happened or makes it so that people were misinformed about them.”
Just then somebody answered at the other end of the line.
“Yeah its me, I need a death to become an injury…his name is Michael Anderson…today, or yesterday morning…oh err Mike how did you die?”
“I got hit buy a car.”
“oh, he got hit by a car…yes of course it was in London…okay just add it to the bill thanks, see ya.”
John hung up and put the phone back in his pocket. He then went over and opened small cupboard on the wall to show three sets of keys. He picked up the smallest set and threw to Michael.
“You can stay in the flat next door for tonight, its got some food and spare clothes, and it looks like you could use them. Tomorrow you should go home and sort out what happened today with them. When your ready call this number and I‘ll begin showing you my world.” John handed him a card with a business and personal number on it and went to the door.
“So you have two places in the same building.” He asked as it seemed a little odd.
“I actually own this whole building.”
Wide eyed Michael just decided to leave before his head exploded and to question John more next time. He went to the next door and entered to find a home the same as John’s but blander, as if it came straight out of a catalogue. Suddenly releasing how tired he was he went to the bedroom and fell asleep as soon as he hit the bed.Groggily, Michael moved to shield his eyes from the sun as he started to recall all that had happened the day before.
Man, that was a bizarre dream. Wait, my window isn’t that big, nor is my bed.
He shot up and looked around and at himself, confirming his thoughts.
It was really real, I’m immortal... and in a very expensive flat.
He looked at himself again and decided to have a shower and change his clothes like John suggested. He looked in the wardrobe and found some decent stuff in there that looked like it should fit him and headed for the bathroom with a set of clothes in his arms. As he got the shower ready he look at himself in the mirror, seeing if any thing was different. He looked mostly around his neck as he distinctly remembered feeling it break after the car hit him, but he couldn’t see any marks. One thing he did notice was that he gained some muscle mass, about a months worth of training he guessed. He saw his shower was ready and stopped his inspection.Twenty minutes later Michael left the bathroom feeling and looking fresher dressed in a dark blue shirt and black jeans and decide to have a quick breakfast. After eating he went to see John about how to get home and caught him in the hallway. He was surprised when he saw John wearing a dark red business suit, black shirt and a white tie. John saw Michael leaving and went up to him.
“Ah good your up sorry I can’t stick around I’ve got to get to work. Anyway there’s a car downstairs that will take you home, just tell him the address and your on your way.”
“You have a job?”
“Course, how else would I pay for all this. Anyway, remember to call that number when your ready.”
With that the two headed for the elevator and went there respective ways for now.
.......One Week Later.......With his re-insertion back into his life a success, despite the fact that he was away for barely a day, Michael set about getting his life back in order. He had to wait until his parents stopped worrying about every-other move he made before he was going to risk calling John and decided to try and enjoy being the center of attention while trying to keep his invulnerability a secret. Finally, after a couple of days, his parents decided to let up and he could get some freedom, so he called John.
“Hello, Klawvious speaking.”
“Hey John, it‘s me Michael.”
“Hey Mike what’s up, How did it go with your family?”
“Oh great, they think that I was only mildly injured by the car and that the hospital said they made a mistake when they said that I was dead.”
“That’s the minders for you, anyway what did you need?”
“I was hoping that you could finish explaining about what I am and everything from the other night?”
“Sure, I can‘t at the moment though, I know, can you be at a place called Great fields Park a 7:30pm tonight?”
“Yeah I know that Park.”
“Great see you there then.”
Michael put down the phone and carried on the rest of the day eager to find out about what John had to say to him. After waiting most of the day Michael headed out to get to the park in time. He’d been to the place a few times with his friend so he knew his way there well enough for there to be no risk of him being late. He went through the gates and saw John sitting on a bench wearing the same thing that he was wearing the other night minus the body armour. John looked up and noticed him and called him over so he took a seat next to him.
“Alright, it’s good to see that your adjusting and that your curious. So what do you want to start with?”
“Well, um how about, are you like me, I mean that jump you did off a building wasn‘t normal?”
“No, I‘m something very different, in fact I was born like this, I‘ve never been human.”
“What do you mean?” He asked, confused.
“I guess I should start from the top then. Firstly there are many races on earth, and by that I mean immortal races, but there are four main ones that take up the majority. They are Lycans, Vampires, Immortals, and Heamo-Lycans. Lycans are basically pure blooded werewolves, they’re born like that, can change at will and have full control in their bestial forms. They are also a lot more powerful than werewolves.”
“So those things from the other night weren‘t Lycans then?”
“No, they were humans that were bitten by a rogue probably. Anyway Vampires you probably know mostly about, however don’t base it all on films as their wrong about quiet a few things.”
“Like what?”
“Like sunlight only weakens their powers and doesn‘t kill them and that they're not all just mindless killers. Some are quite trustworthy in fact.”
“Oookay and what about those other ones, hemee-lycans or whatever?”
“Heamo-Lycans, yes their a bit more complicated. You see about five or six hundred years after vampires and Lycans first appeared, a few of each race left there own kind to be together because back then in was seen a very bad thing to mix the races, so they had to run away and Heamo-lycans are the result. Half vampire and half lycan”
“Okay, so what are you then?”
“I‘m a Heamo-lycan, and before you ask I‘m 223 years old, and do I get my pension, no.”
Michael laughed at that last comment, but was still curious as to what was going to happen now.
“So what now?”
“I‘ll explain more later, but for now I‘m going to show you to someone who‘ll be able to tell you more about your powers.”
With that John and Michael got up and headed for the gate to John cars. They drove for about twenty minutes until they stopped outside a normal looking apartment building. They got out of the car and went up to the door and John pushed 26 and call on the panel. After a few rings someone answered.
“Hello” The voice was bare recognizable over the static.
“Hey it‘s John, I‘ve got someone I‘d like you to have a look at.”
“Hang on” the voice cut out and there was a buzz and the door unlocked so they could get in. They walked up three floors and stopped and an old gray door. John knocked, and the door creaked open half way to reveal and man with long gray hair and beard wearing a dark blue suit.
“Alright, old man.” The greeting as he shook his hand.
“Fine, old man, is this the one you mentioned.” He said as the pointed a Michael. He had a Scottish accent the Michael didn't pick up over the building intercom.
“Yeah this is Mike, Mike this is Edward Hepps, he‘ll tell you about your abilities.”
“Alright.” He said with an awkward wave.
“You better come in then.”
They walked in and closed the door. The first thing that Michael noticed was the large number of books and weird coloured bottles in the hall. They managed to navigate passed the books and into the living room. This room seemed normal, except the fact that there was a cage hanging from the ceiling with a bat in it. They all took a seat on an old sofa.
“Right lad, lets take a look at yeh.” Ed proceeded to stand in front of Michael and had a thoughtful expression, making Michael slightly nervous.
Hurry up
Shut up I’m looking Came an unexpected reply
Suddenly hearing a voice in his head freaked Michael out.
“What…”
“Shhh. ahh there” Ed then turns to John with an amused smile on his face.
“It seems this ones proper stoned.”
Just then Michael had a creeping feeling all over his skin and looked down to see his hands and arms harden into rock which then seem to form red cracks. He got up and his foot steps sounded like his feet weighed a ton.
“What the hell just happened to me.”
“Don‘t worry, it‘s just your power." John said trying the calm him. "You‘ve got the stone skin ability.”
“Should I go and get the moisturizer for those cracks?” Ed asked jokingly.
“What’s the stone skin ability and how do I turn it off?”
“Just concentrate and you‘ll turn back to normal.” John replied
Michael closed his eyes and concentrated on turning back to normal. The creeping feeling came back and when he opened his eyes his skin was back to normal.
“You looked like you was going to shit yourself.” Ed laughed out
“Thanks” Michael replied sarcastically.
“Enough you two." John stepped in. "Anyway the stone skin ability gives impenetrable skin and greatly increases your strength. However it also weighs you down so your less agile and a lot slower. Anyway we better get going.”
“I‘ll see you at green-mans?” Ed asked.
“Yeah we‘re going there now, I owe you a drink see ya later.” John replied.
They headed pass the books and out the door.
“Green-mans?” Michael asked.
“You‘ll see, anyway your lucky he didn‘t do the fruit bat thing on you.”
They headed back down to the car and started driving again. They parked in a car park and headed down an alley. They navigated through the alleys and stopped at a doorway with a large purple man with light and dark blue hair. Michael stares at him, never having seen a purple man before.
“Alright, Kano”
“Alright John, Who‘s the kid?”
“Just a newbie.”
They walk in and Michael gets an even bigger shock. The place was full of weird looking creatures, as well as some normal looking people speaking in strange languages. What was also strange was the bartender, he was about seven and a half or eight feet tall, green with horns and blond hair and beard. He was wearing a white t-shirt and dark blue jeans. John and Michael walked up to the bar and waited for the green guy to come over. He stopped talking to some guy with a ponytail when he saw John and came over.
“Alright Ajax”
“Alright John, what’s with the kid?” The green man replied in a deep voice.
“This is Mike, he’s just become an immortal.”
“Alright” Michael said a little dazed by some of the more colourful patrons.
“Well Mike, welcome to the Green Viper, the beer is strong, the customers are strange and the bitches are hot.”
A fat man with a horn and a tail walk past them.
“Hey Go-marsh you fat fuck, you owe my twenty quid from last night.”
“You know I‘m good for it, just don‘t set Tina on me.” Go-marsh shakenly said as he quickly walks off.
“Don‘t worry Mike, Tina’s just my other half. She may be human but she‘s still one hard bitch.”
“What did you just say.” Cried a voice from a room in the back.
“Nothing Tina.” Ajax called quickly.
John leaned in closer to Michael and whispered.
“You know who wears the trousers there.”
“Anyway so what brings you to the Green Viper?” Asked Ajax
“Mike here owes me a drink because I saved his life and I wanted him to see how deep this shit gets, also I‘d said I would meet Ed here.”
“Ohh Ed I haven‘t seen that old git in ages, he isn‘t gonna bring that fucking fruit bat is he?”
“I doubt it.”
“That fucking thing freaks me out, anyway since your new the first drinks on me, just don‘t tell Tina, she's got an issue with that yellow mother-fucker at the brewery.”
“Alright thanks.” Michael said as he could use a drink.
Just as Ajax handed over the drinks Ed came through the door.
“Took your time.” Said John
“You still haven‘t learnt patience at your age.”
“Yeah, yeah, hey Ajax give him his usual.”
Ajax gets the drink ready and puts it in front of Ed as he took a seat.
