Chapter Three: The Impossible

Hola, Estoy llamando para mi hijo… él es enfermo.” Akiro Ishikira spoke into the phone, putting on a wonderful bad-Spanish-speaking-American accent. He mumbled a few other words, and hung up.

“Alright,” He announced, “I'm clear. C.J, you're the last one.” Akiro looked to a girl sitting on the other side of the garage. His bright green eyes shone in nice contrast with his dark red hair. He wore a shirt colored with a dark shade of maroon, with a Spanish logo on the front, off-centered. He also adorned a pair of khaki cargo pants held up loosely with a belt and a pair of converses. Hidden beneath his shirt was a gold locket, well concealed.

“Okay. I need a girl call to in.” C.J Miroshi replied, not bothering to look up at her redheaded friend. She herself had black hair, with a single cerulean string accenting her clear, crystalline eyes. She wore a black tee-shirt with the trim fading into blue. Her jeans were dark, boot cut, and loose-fitting, though she didn't wear a belt. Her converse sat on the floor, about two feet from her socked feet.

Yukiko sighed; knowing that meant the task would fall on her. Yukiko had dark brown hair, and bright green eyes to match her brother's. She wore a white tank-top, and a jean jacket to go over it. She also wore jeans, which had a slight flare.

Yukiko and Akiro Ishikira were from Japan, while C.J came from New York, only a temporary residence for her. They'd signed up for foreign exchange for numerous reasons. For Yukiko, it was to actually improve her language skills. C.J wanted to go somewhere she hadn't been yet (which limited the choices by quite a bit), and Akiro simply wanted to see what skipping class was like in a different country.

They'd met at their school, and the two girls made fast friends. While Akiro and C.J stated off a little edgy, the two of them managed into an odd friendship.

Akiro tossed the phone to his sister, who called in for C.J, using a near perfect accent, and talking in monotone. Once the three of them were finally clear, they left the Villa's garage and headed for town. The Villas were C.J's host family, and they were always away all day, so it was the prime place to hang while they were supposed to be in school.

They were in a suburb of the city Toledo in Spain. Toledo was a cool town, at least in the eyes of the three teens. They walked nonchalantly down the dirt path, and the closer they got to the city, the closer and more tightly spaced the houses and buildings became. Soon, they'd entered the city through a small, tight alleyway, and C.J led the way to their favorite spot. As they reached the city, the walls became lighter in color, made out of a light-tan colored brick.

On the way, the group walked under a circular sign, and each one of them jumped up to hit it as they passed, using the pole to pull themselves up and forward. Past the sign was a large archway, which served a pass between two buildings on either side of the street. Before that archway, on the right, was another leading into an alleyway. The three teens turned into the alleyway, where they usually hung out.

Yukiko sighed. “Hm… I wonder… C.J, you said you could play guitar, right?”

“Yeah. Why?” C.J asked, blinking.

“Well… Akiro can play the drums awesomely, and I can play bass… and all of us can sing. I wonder how much money we could make…” she kind of dropped the idea there, assuming it wasn't worth looking into.

But her brother and C.J just stared. “Yuki… that's genius!!”

“Huh?”

“Sure,” Akiro said, “it'd be great… if we had anything to play. I mean… well… how much money do you have? I could probably rent a cheap drum set, but…”

“I have my guitar with me.” C.J replied.

“I don't.” Yukiko stated. “I have…” She furrowed her brow a little, “Well, it translates into about eighty dollars.”

“Technically, that would be enough to rent one, but it's harder to find a bass that someone will rent, so here…” C.J handed Yukiko money, “That should be enough to buy one.”

Yukiko smiled, “Alright… so, are we really gonna do this?” She laughed a little, “I mean… start a band in Spain?”

Akiro laughed, too. “Well, when you put it like that, we sound crazy, but… yeah.”

“But first we have to find you two something to play on.” C.J said, and got up. They wandered around town, Akiro asking people about where they might find instruments. He was the best foreign speaker of them, so he did all the talking.

Upon entering the first three stores they found, the teens were sorely off put. The prices were either too high or there was nothing to buy. “Sorry,”* one woman said, “We'd just had our last few basses stolen.”

“No, we don't haggle. Now get out!”

“Sorry kid, nothing here.”

“Sold out. Read the sign.”

After an hour of rejection, they were sulking around an alleyway by the last store they'd tried, trying to think of something new.

“Hey!” They heard a voice call, “Hey, you kids!” Akiro looked up, afraid they'd been caught skipping. “I heard you were looking for some playing equipment?” A man asked as he approached the group. They relaxed.

“Yeah, we are.” C.J said, looking up at him with dull eyes. “But everything's too expensive”.

“Well… I've got a bass that I don't use- I never learned to play. How much you got?”

They showed him their money, and he led them to his house. He seemed very happy, and took the money without any complaint. They were amazed: the guitar looked brand-new.

They took it back to their spot, and Yukiko played it for a while. After about ten minutes, she stopped and stared at the guitar. “Anyone else feeling a little weird?”

“Yeah.” Akiro said, “That was too easy. Such a cheap price for such a nice-“

“Oh, God…!” C.J interrupted.

“What?” Akiro asked.

“Remember that lady… at the first shop?” C.J looked up at him, eyes wide.

“Yeah, what about- …No… you don't think…”

“She said she'd had one stolen…” Yukiko interjected.

“I think we should go see if it really is hers. Hey- if we're honest, she might even refund our money… or let us keep it!” Akiro said, helping C.J up. The two girls nodded.

The three of them ventured back to the store. Out in front, a police officer was talking to the lady who was at the counter earlier. C.J and Yukiko didn't notice Akiro stop walking.

The woman looked up, and saw the guitar in Yukiko's hands. She stared a moment, then shouted and pointed at Yukiko. The two girls froze. The officer looked around, and turned to them.

“Run! She thinks we took it!” Akiro shouted from behind them. They both spun and ran.

“Akiro!” Yukiko yelled up at her brother, about a yard and a half in front of her, “If we explain ourselves, we won't be in any-”

“Forget the guitar! Drop it!”

“What?” C.J asked, “That'll just get us in-”

“Listen, where are we supposed to be??” Akiro shouted, all three of them still running, “Last time we got caught skipping, they told us that the next time we did, we'd go home! Regardless of what we did or didn't do, that guy will do background searches and all that. And then we'll be in trouble.”

With this new incentive, the girls put on an extra boost of speed. In they went home, C.J would go to New York, and Yuki and Akiro would return to Osaka. They may never see each other again.

The three of them raced down a main street, dotted with people and random kids who didn't have class at the time. The people, plants, animals, doorways, and cars all seemed to melt together as they ran by, becoming one big, beige blur.

Akiro, still in the lead, noticed the cop chasing after them had stopped. He looked forward, and listened and watched. In the not-so-distant distance, he could hear sirens, and they were approaching fast. He looked around, and spotted an alley. Wanting to turn before the cops got there, and saw which way the three of them went, he sped up. He turned, followed by his sister and C.J.

But C.J's converse weren't meant for running. The bottoms of her shoes were smooth, so she skid as she turned, which delayed her just enough for a cop to see her enter the alleyway.

`Running from the cops is a federal offence in the U.S.' C.J thought and smirked half-heartedly to herself, `I hope it's some sort of joke here.'

OoOoOoOoO
“Well…” Yukiko said, as she and Akiro faced C.J, “I guess… this is the last time we'll be talking without outrageous long-distance fees, huh?”

C.J smiled at her friend's attempt to lighten the mood. “I'll take the charge.”

Akiro just stood, blankly staring out the airport's window as a plane took off, and a lady came on the intercom and announced their flight. “I guess… we'll see ya…”

OoOoOoOoO

“Psst!”

Yukiko watched the words in her book go by, without bothering to read them, and flipped the pages after running out of words to look at. Beside her, Akiro laid back in his chair eyes closed, with his headphones on.

“Yuki…!”

The brunette looked up and around. No one seemed to be looking at her.

“Over here! Up!” The voice urged.

Yukiko looked into the luggage compartment above the empty seats next to her. There, laying flat, was none other than C.J Miroshi.

“C.J!” Yukiko exclaimed, and the other girl put her finger to her lips.

Yukiko covered her mouth and C.J whispered to her, “Is anyone watching?” Yukiko looked around. Most people were asleep. She shook her head, and her friend poked her head out to look around. Seeing that no one was, she silently climbed down and sat in the seat below her.

“What are you doing here?” Yukiko asked, not sure whether or not she should be so happy. “Aren't you going to get into serious trouble?”

C.J shrugged, “Maybe. But…” C.J laughed to herself, “This sounds kinda weird, but I feel like I've known you guys more than I really have…”

Yukiko opened her mouth to respond, but instead, Akiro sat up, yanking his headphones off, “Ceej?? What are you- how did you- …Why are you here? You know you much trou-”

“We've been over that.” Yukiko interrupted. “She-” Suddenly, the plane jolted, and the three collided with the chair in front of them. The `fasten seatbelt' sign flashed on, and the oxygen masks fell. Panicked, most people yelled and quickly fumbled with their belts and grasped at their oxygen masks. The Ishikiras and their stowaway friend glanced at each other. Their entire row was missing oxygen masks.

With the plane rocking violently, they moved to different seats, and quickly placed the masks over their mouths and noses. The two girls reached down for their belts, and fastened them. Akiro tried, but the buckle wouldn't click. He glanced up at his sister, who wasn't paying attention in particular. She and C.J were both apprehensive. Akiro kept watching them as he sent heat from his hand and melted the buckle together.

The plane jolted again, and the cabin was blasted with air, which whipped around them. The three of them clutched their masks as the plane plummeted.
