Chapter 6

Evans stared out of the field periscope. The Germans were probably still eating which meant they had the advantage of surprise. “Fix bayonets!” Evans let his gaze fall over the troops faces. John was synchronizing his watch Ferret was loading his Colt. All the men looked worried except Ferret who once again looked quite calm. Maybe like Evans he didn't fear death. Then Ferret took off his tunic and put on a trench coat. He even dumped his shovel and pack. “What are you doing?”
Asked Evans.
“Ease of movement I don't like being constricted.” John interrupted. “Sir its time.”
Evans turned took a deep breath and blew on the whistle. He was first out it was his duty to lead his men. The Germans were caught completely off guard and British made it half way across before the Germans realized what was going on. Evans heard the rattle of machineguns and took cover in a crater. He looked around for a familiar face and saw Ferret slip under the barbed wire without cutting it. What the fuck. He was just like weasel quick and agile. John was right beside Ferret. The noise of battle intensified. The bursts of machineguns grew longer. Evans rose up and noticed the wire was now cut. He made his way through and noticed his men were nearing the German trench. Ferret leading the charge. Evans had to sprint to catch up. The screams of the wounded were every where but he noticed Ferret was not compelled to stop and help. So maybe he did have experience. Ferret was stepping over them shouting to encourage the men his Colt firing away.
“Don't stop lads keep going. Don't stop for anything.”
The men had reached the lip of the trench. Ferret drew his trench knife and jumped in. Evans and John along with him. The Germans were desperately trying to hold the line but were failing. Suddenly a soldier rose up to attack Ferret and he drove the knife into the mans gut. Blood streamed out of his mouth. He pushed away and shot a round into his head. Ferret knelt down and picked up the officers Luger. The Germans were in full scale retreat. They had abandoned their trench and had ran all the back to their reserve. Evans sat down catching his breath along with John. The attack had taken less then thirty minutes. But they had lost 150 men in the process. “How you doing Major?”
Asked John. Evans stood up. “Look John I'm sorry about the fight we had I just need a break are we still friends.”
John reached out with his right hand and Evans shook it. “Major the Jerries are regrouping. Be ready for a counter attack.”
In the next few hours the Germans threw assault after assault and were beaten back each time. The trench was theirs and the Germans couldn't dislodge the British. That night the attacks ceased and Evans finally got his leave back to England.
