Chapter 9
Major Evans stepped off of the train and immediately started looking for her. But saw nothing but a sea of khaki. She must be here she said she would meet me here. Suddenly he was tapped on the shoulder. And Evans turned to see a tall woman wearing a long skirt and a rather loose white shirt that didn't seem to fit her. “Major Evans I presume.”
He nodded and she motioned for him to follow her. Colonel Evans followed her out of the station and across the street. “Madam where are we going?”
Asked Evans. “To the diner she is there. Don't worry its not much farther.”
Sure enough after another block they came to a small pub/diner. “She had a special table reserved for you and her.”
She approached the waiter. “We are here for Miss Diane.”
“Ah yes right this way.”
“Just follow the waiter he will take you to her.”
“Where are you going?”
“I'll be around don't worry.”
Evans followed the waiter to a small table and he motioned that that was it. She stood up and embraced him. He was so happy to see her and apparently she was happy to see him. It was Evans who spoke first. “I thought you were going to meet me at the train station.”
“I'm sorry I had to wait on the table this is a very popular pub you know.”
“Its ok I'm just glad to see you. How have you been and what's life like at the hospital?” “I've been alright I guess the hospital is at its busiest. I almost couldn't make it here with all of the wounded needing care. But luckily I work for a nice doctor. And he said I could take some time off. I really needed it.”
For a moment neither of them spoke and then Diane said. “Well are you hungry after your ride. The meals on me, I know it's been a long time since you've had real food.”
He nodded and sat down. “Is something wrong you aren't talking much?”
Evans smiled and reached into his coat pocket and pulled out what looked like a small leather box. Colonel Evans handed it to her and she opened it. And there inside the box was a wedding ring. Surprised she searched for something to say but her mind came up blank. “Try it on.”
Said Evans. It fit her perfectly and she said. “George I don't know what to say.”
“Will you… marry me?”
“Yes. Yes I will.”
She smiled and he smiled back. “I love you and I'll keep loving you for ever. If I fall on the field will you still love me?”
“Of course.”
“Are you two ready to order.”
Colonel Evans let her choose and then he choose. And when they were done they stayed and talked until the pub closed. “Where will you be staying?”
Asked Evans. “Well I rented a room for us but I wasn't sure how long you would be here.”
“Well my leave was extended through the holiday so I'll be here for a while.”
Evans could see the hotel before they got to it. The thing was absolutely huge. They climbed the stairs and entered the room. Diane closed the door and the two retired for the night.
