Identity
It was immediately decided that I would take on the submissive role and be the one to actually bear the children. It would be a while before I could bear; my body hadn't gone through its first heat, meaning my reproductive organs weren't fully developed yet. Hayden seemed fine with that. After all, we would have a lifetime to bear and raise children.
Life was hectic at first since we were just starting out. Hayden found us clothes, food, shelter, and water. We built a small house using everything from the land. I became the `housewife' while Hayden cleared away the forest and hunted the local wildlife, though he made sure to not totally kill off the species. Soon, we fell into routine.
I woke up sweating and panting one night and knew that my first heat had come. Hayden did what he could to soothe me, but he knew as well as I did that the only way to stop it was through sex.
“Harou,” he murmured, smoothing down my hair. “You know the time has come.”
“Yes,” I breathed. “We have to break the biggest taboo by having sexual intercourse. I must bear your children.”
“Yes,” I breathed. “We have to break the biggest taboo by having sexual intercourse. I must bear your children.”
Hayden kissed my forehead, then his lips found mine.
“It feels weird,” he murmured, pulling away momentarily. “It feels like I'm going to have sex with myself.”
“It can't be helped,” I whispered. “We just have to do it.”
Hayden nodded and his lips found mine again. I opened my mouth and his tongue searched my mouth. Slowly, lovingly, he peeled my clothing off and gently traced my skin.
“Are you going to take me or not?” I growled, thrusting my hips up. I could feel the eagerness in his pants. He pulled them down and thrust forward. The moment our bodies connected, the moment I had him inside me, I knew my soul was complete. It was how it was meant to be. I would want no other in my lifetime as he would want no one but me. He seemed to realize it and became more eager. He slid further and further inside me, growling lustfully as our rocking became harder and harder. His tongue left my mouth and trailed down my neck.
His tongue left my mouth and trailed down my neck. His teeth gently nipped at my skin, marking me as his and his alone. I laughed softly as I traced my fingers through his silky hair. I had forgotten that we were twins. That was not important anymore-we were lovers. That was all.
He finally pulled out of me, both of us needing rest. He kept one arm draped lazily around my waist as we slept.

Aleksei lounged in the Breeder's dormitory, waiting for dinner. Suddenly, Jesse tapped him on the shoulder.
“Hey Aleksei, I hear you got a mate,” he sneered softly.
“Shut up,” Aleksei growled in the back of his throat.
“He's here, if you want a look at him.”
Aleksei stared at him. “Really?”
Aleksei stared at him. “Really?”
“Yeah. He's standing with Ian and Halen's mates. He's the blonde pressing his hand against the glass.”
Aleksei rolled over and looked. He stared at the blonde who was staring back at him. The boy was slim and pale. Soft downy gold curls perfectly framed his face and sapphire eyes stared curiously at him. Aleksei swore that he saw the boy blush faintly as his eyes traveled down his frame.
“What do you think?” his friend Alden asked.
“He's really pale and weak-looking, right Aleksei?” sneered Jesse.
“He's really pale and weak-looking, right Aleksei?” sneered Jesse.
“I don't know,” Alden murmured. “I think he's rather cute.”
Aleksei made a sound of indifference.
“Dinner!” one of the wardens called. Aleksei followed the other Breeders into the cafeteria and stood in line. Across the room, he watched as the blonde-haired boy stood behind Halen's mate. Alden caught him looking and whispered, “his name is Daire.”
“Dinner!” one of the wardens called. Aleksei followed the other Breeders into the cafeteria and stood in line. Across the room, he watched as the blonde-haired boy stood behind Halen's mate. Alden caught him looking and whispered, “his name is Daire.”
“Like I care,” Aleksei snorted.
Alden looked worried. “You should be. He is your mate after all.”
“Don't…call…him…that,” Aleksei hissed angrily. “I don't want to think of that!”
“But that's what he is,” Alden said sadly. “Like it or not, you're stuck together,” he said more to himself.
Aleksei and Alden sat with their regular group in the corner of the cafeteria for dinner. Aleksei couldn't help glancing over at Daire from time to time where he saw with the other two Bearers. He was delicately picking at his food.
Caelyn glanced at Daire. “Are you feeling okay? You're not eating much.”
“I'm not really that hungry,” Daire mumbled.
“You've gotta eat,” Aidan encouraged. “You've gotta keep your strength up.”
“I know.”
Daire still only picked at his food. After dinner, he trudged back to the dormitories with Caelyn and Aidan sticking close to him. He saw why as they turned right down a long corridor; the Breeders were being escorted back to their dormitories and they came quite close. It was a tense minute. Caelyn leaned in and exchanged a few words in a soft tone with the tawny haired boy who had been with Aleksei earlier. Daire couldn't help shivering when he felt Aleksei's cold blue eyes on him. It felt like he had been doused with a bucket of ice water. Aidan put an arm around him and glared. Aleksei's lips turned up in a cold sneer. It gave Daire goosebumps. Then, they were past. No one spoke until they were safely in the dormitories. Daire saw, as if for the first time, there were only a handful of Bearers. He knew he shouldn't be surprised; the number of male Bearers was decreasing. That was the whole reason the Institute was created-to give them a safe environment to reproduce.
Aidan forced Daire to sit on the edge of his bed and peered anxiously at him.
“Are you sure you're feeling okay?” he asked. “You look like you're going to faint. Do you feel weak? Light-headed?”
“I feel a bit dizzy,” Daire mumbled as the room seemed to swim around him. He felt his heart beating faster and faster.
“Calm down. Take a couple deep breaths,” Caelyn said soothingly, coming over to them. “Put your head down between your knees.”
Daire obeyed as the room seemed to spin faster and faster. He could feel himself shaking as he tried to regain control of himself. Tears burned at the edges of his eyes. Finally, he couldn't control it anymore and let out a soft howl of misery. Tears fell fast onto his lap and he choked back his sobs. The mattress sagged slightly as Caelyn sat down next to him and gently started rubbing his back.
“Shh. It's going to be okay,” he said soothingly, but despite his best attempts, Daire didn't stop crying for hours. Finally, he lay on his bed, quiet.
“So what do you think set him off?” Aidan asked in a whisper, as Daire had fallen asleep.
“I think it was a combination of homesickness and fear of being in a totally new place. He's probably overwhelmed by everything,” Caelyn answered.
Aidan nodded. “It doesn't help that his mate is a cold and uncaring bastard.”
“Yes. Hopefully, Aleksei will come around or else we're going to have some problems.”
“What do you suppose the doctors were thinking when they made Daire his mate? I mean, there are a bunch of other guys he could have been mated to, so why him? Why the hell are they putting Daire through this?” Aidan asked, his voice rising slightly in anger.
“Shh,” Caelyn pleaded. “Don't wake Daire up.”
“Sorry,” Aidan dropped his voice to a whisper. “So what do you think?”
“I have no idea. They must have had a good reason to put Daire with Aleksei instead of someone more suitable. We just have to trust that they know what they're doing.”
“And if not?”
“And if not?”
“I have no clue.”
Aidan sighed softly. “That's what I'm afraid of.”
“Yeah, me too,” Caelyn murmured, reaching out and taking Aidan's hand. He squeezed it lightly.
“So what were you talking to Alden about?” Aidan asked.
“Oh, he just inquired about Daire. He wanted to know if he was all right because he wasn't eating much. And…he said that he's going to try and bring Aleksei around. He's not sure how successful he's going to be, but he's going to try.”
“I see.”
“We're going to talk some more tomorrow during our lessons.”
Aidan nodded. Daire moved restlessly in his sleep. Caelyn sighed softly and gently smoothed his hair down.
----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------
Aleksei was surprised to see Daire the next morning as he walked into the cafeteria flanked by Caelyn and Aidan as he was yesterday. However, there was something much different about him. His arms were wrapped around his body and his eyes were downcast, apparently lost in thought. He looked so…insecure. Aleksei watched as they sat at a table and though Aidan and Caelyn pushed food at him, he merely shook his head and refused to eat a bite. He didn't know why he was feeling this way about the boy and brushed them off indifferently.
At the end of breakfast, he rose with the others and brought his plate of untouched food to the garbage can. He walked with Caelyn and Aidan to their first lesson. They sat in one corner with the majority of the Bearers while the Breeders sat in the other corner, heavily guarded. However, there were several Breeders allowed to intermingle with the Bearers. Alden was one of the lucky few and quickly came over to sit with Aidan and Caelyn.
“You...” Daire murmured, surprised.
Alden smiled. “Some of us Breeders who have self-control are allowed to interact with the Bearers.”
“Oh.”
“I should introduce myself. My name is Alden.”
“I'm Daire.”
“Yes, I know.” There was an awkward silence. “Look, I feel I must apologize on Aleksei's behalf. He…” Alden sighed softly. “You mustn't take Aleksei's behaviors personally, all right? He…doesn't know how to deal with people very well. He doesn't hate you or anything. He's just…confused.”

Daire silently nodded. Aidan engaged him in a conversation about the lessons and what to expect so that Caelyn and Alden could carry on a conversation without being overheard.
“He looks like he was crying a lot,” Alden murmured.
Caelyn nodded. “He cried for several hours last night. Aidan and I did the best we could to comfort him.”
“Poor thing,” Alden whispered.
“They all cry at the beginning. They're just so young. They're scared and hardly understand what's happening. It'll take a while, but Daire will eventually get settled in. Aidan and I will see to that.”
“Good.”
“Good.”
The two of them stopped talking because the teacher was starting the lesson, but Alden passed Caelyn a note.
I'm not terribly worried; it's not like Aleksei has any choice in the matter in the end-his instincts will kick in when Daire has his first heat. And there's no way he's going to be able to stop it.
Yeah, I know. It would be nice if Aleksei would acknowledge Daire's presence as his mate because it would make him feel a lot better, but that's like asking for a miracle, huh?
I don't know. We can try, but it really depends on Aleksei
Yeah.
At the end of an hour, there was a break, followed by another hour of lessons. Lunch was at noon and then the Bearers and Breeders separated for their afternoon classes. Aidan and Caelyn brought Daire to the front of the room and took their seats near the middle. The teacher entered, a tall, wiry man in his late fifties with large owl-like eyes.
“Ah, the new student,” the teacher said with a smile. “Welcome to The Institute. My name is Mr. Brennen. You are…?”
“Daire,” Daire answered. “My name is Daire.”
“Daire. Well, let me tell you a bit about what's going on here. I'm sure one of your new friends has told you about the format of the classes here at the Institute?”

“Yes,” Daire answered with a nod.
“This first lesson I like to use as a study period and then, depending on the day, we do certain things. Today I'm going to give a lecture on proper nutrition during heat. You…understand what heat is?”
“Yes sir.”
“Good. Things will seem hectic around here for a while, but I promise, it will get better. Since you are new here, I'll take the time to explain a few things. You and your mate won't officially be joined together for a couple weeks. They, and by “they”, I mean the Council wants to make sure that you're properly settled in first. The joining ceremony is pretty much a formality. It's a wedding ceremony, if you will, verbally binding you and your mate together. You won't be physically bound together until you experience your first heat when you're fourteen. After that, you'll mate whenever you go to heat in the hopes that you produce children. If you get pregnant, you will not have any more heats until after you give birth. It'll be so much easier to understand once you experience it for yourself.”

“Okay.”
“Do you have any questions?”
Daire shook his head. He took an empty seat beside Caelyn and opened his History Textbook. He had been assigned the first chapter to read before the next lesson.
Before the apocalypse, life on Earth thrived. The human race had built massive cities and no one seemed to give any thought to the apocalypse. This, however, proved untrue when a group of scientists started experimenting with genetics in order to create a new breed of humans capable of surviving the apocalypse.
It was soon determined that the easiest way was to create a set of identical twins because their DNA is completely identical. In the year 4100 (by the old calendar), the scientists were successful in creating twin boys artificially, that is, without the aid of a mother's womb. Both of them had the ability to bear children and were given everything needed to survive. A nuclear war ensued, destroying the majority of life on Earth. The apocalypse came in 4115 and life on Earth ceased to exist. The twins Harou and Hayden were born a thousand years after the apocalypse and began to live life, not as twin brothers, but as lovers.
Daire looked up from his page, frowning.
“That's….interesting,” he murmured, not really knowing what to think.
“Oh it gets better. Trust me,” Aidan grinned.
Caelyn just rolled his eyes.
To be continued…
Note From the Author: Daire is my favorite character so far. He really is a sweetheart. He'll be okay. ^_^ He's got Caelyn and Aidan to protect him and that is saying something. The reason the doctor was doing another examination on Daire was to make sure his body was all right internally. If you get my meaning. I got a couple questions about why Daire was tranquilized. It's standard procedure for both Breeders and Bearers to be sedated when they're brought in to keep them quiet and keep them from panicking and hurting themselves or (in the Breeders' case) hurt others. Hope that helps. Thirteen is a rather young age for all this to be happening, though there are some reasons for it. Male Bearers go into what's called their heat when they reach 14 years of age which means their reproductive organs have fully developed. They're not expected to actually have children until they reach this age. They come to live at the Institute at the age of 13 so they get used to living there.
