He stood at the edge of a city. At least he thought it was a city. It was hard to tell through all the dust and smoke. It was still a day's travel before he even reached the heart of it. Grabbing his pack, he easily hefted it onto his broad shoulders. His pick axe remained in his hand, a steady reminder of what he was doing here. He was going to make a difference.

Evana walked up to a large manor. She stood outside the gates with her letter in hand. A figured stood not far from her with a bundle of blankets in his hands, a large back pack on his back, and a suit case on the ground. Slowly she walked over to him. "Maverick?"

Maverick turned to Evana and flashed a soft, sweet smile. "Evana. How lovely to see you again. It's been a long time." She held up the letter and he pulled out one from his back pocket.

"Should have known you would be here. You and I are a lot alike," she said with a smirk. "What's with the blankets?"

Maverick moved to her and moved the blankets a bit. Evana paled and backed away. "You stole a baby!?! That's just sick! I'm not even that nuts!"

"I didn't steal her. She's mine," he said with a light laugh. "And keep your voice down. You will wake her."

A soft tug on Evana's dress made her look down. A little girl with a suitcase as big as her little body stood next to Evana. "You come with a lot of kids?"

"She is not mine..." Maverick said softly. "Are you lost little girl?"

Hailey held up a letter. "I've...come because I was told to..."

"A little girl?"

"I suppose it could happen."

They all turned when soft footsteps came behind. A young girl shifted at her feet with her silver hair dancing in the night wind. "Umm...did any of you send me this letter?"

"It seems we all got a letter..."

"Pardon me comrades!" Boris said with a smile. Upon seeing the small girl he thrust his pick axe into the ground, the blunt end first as to not scare her. Putting his bags on the end of his tool, he waved to them. "I am not quite familiar with this city. Do any of you know where...." He paused and reached into his pocket to pull out his blood stained letter. "'X marks the spot is?'"

"Hello, friend, I'm Maverick. And you are in the right place. We all have a letter," Maverick said with a welcoming smile. "The gate seems to be closed. I don't know if we should force ourselves in or not."

"Force is always best," Evana said and cracked her knuckles. Maverick placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Don't be so rash."

Hailey looked the new man over. He was the biggest man she had seen. Walking over to him, she fixed her beret on her heat and pushed back her curls. She tugged lightly on his pants and held her hands up. "Pick me up!"

Boris looked down at the small girl and felt a tug on his heart. With one hand he easily lifted her small frame up and set her on his shoulders. "There you go!" he laughed. "My name is Boris comrades. It is a pleasure to meet you all." He turned his gaze to the girl who was now contently humming on his shoulder. "And who might you be?"

"My name is Hailey!" she said sweetly. "And I will call you Teddy! Because you are like a fluffy bear!" She pulled out her letter. "Look we match! We both have blood on our invitations!"

Off to the side Lana shifted again and debated whether or not to leave. Maybe she made a mistake? "Hey, girl!" Evana called. "Name."

"Um...Lana..." she said softly.

"I'm Evana. Stay out of my stuff," she said sternly.

Lana nodded quietly.

"Why can't you be nice Evana? Can't you see she's scared?" Evana shrugged then yawned. "Come stand by me, Lana. I will look after you."

Slowly Lana moved next to Maverick.

Boris just laughed. This girl was adorable! "It is a pleasure to meet you, Hailey."

"Joy...just what I need. Kids and women." Sven flicked his cigarette out and lowered his hat over his eyes. He moved his briefcase to his free hand so that he could search for some more cigarettes. As he neared the group, his eyes traveled up Evana. "Well now...how much?"

Evana growled and hit the man in the face. "Too much for you!"

"Evana!" Suddenly the baby in his arms started to cry. "Thank you! It took me an hour to get her to sleep!"

Hailey hugged Boris's head. "Don't fight! Fighting puts you in the naughty corner!"

"There. There. It's okay," Boris said as he patted her back gently. "No one is going to the corner."

Sven cursed. Grabbing his nose, he yelled as he pushed it back into place. "You've got a hell of a punch for a crazy bitch."

"Who the hell are you calling a crazy bitch?"

Sven felt a cold chill run down his spine as he looked back to see a glint of metal coming across the horizon. "As if this day couldn't get any worse Satan herself decided to come a calling. Go home, Sarah. No one needs or wants you here."

Sarah smirked and pushed her envelope into his chest. "Too bad. It seems whoever is orchestrating this little get together wants me here."

Lana peeked into the blankets and saw a small baby in Maverick's arms. Her pulled a small pacifier out of his pocket and slipped it into her mouth. "She's...so small..."

"Two months today," he said proudly.

"What's her name, Mr. Maverick!" Hailey asked. Everything that came out of her mouth was like and excited burst of energy.

"Angelia."

"Oooooo!"

On little Angelia's wrist was a gold bracelet. Evana flexed her fingers ignoring the man she had now hit. "Gold is hard to come by. Why is it on the little brat?"

"She's not a brat. And hold your tongue or I'll cut it out," Maverick said.

Evana smirked. "Now that's the old Maverick I know."

"I agree with toots here. Gold is rare. You should be keeping it for yourself and not some kid." Sven's eyes darted upward as he heard a bird screech. Instinctively a gun appeared out of nowhere and he pointed toward the bird and fired. As the bullet was about to hit its intended target, it suddenly veered off course.

The cigarette fell out of his mouth and onto the dusty ground as he stared at the bird in shock. "What the-"

"Hah! Looks like the mighty Sven has lost his touch," Sarah smirked.

The falcon flew off and landed on its master's hand. He hadn't been expecting others, and they were such a rowdy bunch. Perhaps this was a bad idea. None of them had seen him yet. He could simply leave and none would be the wiser.

"Off in the distance...a boy..." Lana said softly.

"I don't see anyone," Evana said as she squinted.

"I...have a gift..."

"Oh, honey. We all do. It's why we are here I'm sure."

"Talent? My only skill is killing and making love," Sven smirked.

"Really? If those are your best two assets then you'd best just kill yourself now."

"Comrades. We shouldn't be fighting amongst ourselves. We are all here for the same reason. Let us rejoice and work together!"

"I'm afraid you're wrong in that aspect Boris." Thin fingers pushed his glasses back on his nose. The figure which hadn't been there before, was now calmly standing before them. "Though you are here for the same general reason, each of you is motivated differently. Some by greed. Some by loss. Some by hope. Those notions are what will drive you forward. Yet in the end what you really are searching for is nothing more than a way to better your current existence; and that my friends is what led you to me."

He looked up at them and smiled. "Please. Come inside. We have much to discuss." Clapping his hands, the large metal doors slid open revealing the tunnel to his housing area. "Oh Mavin! At the very least come in for something to drink and to hear what I have to offer. Zenith is more than welcome to join you as well."

Lana looked in the distance at the boy. "Maven..." she whispered. His name will be one she would remember.

As they walked in Hailey waved her letter. "I must speak to the man about the letter! Nanny Doc is dead! I was promised to be taken care of! I need a nanny!"

Xavier smiled at the little girl. Kneeling down he patted her head. "You must be Hailey. Am I right? Doc talked about you a lot."

Tear welled up in her eyes and she hugged him. "I don't have him anymore! I have no one to look after me!"

He pulled her into a hug and stroked her back. "I promised my friend that I would take care of you, Hailey. You do not have to worry."

She nodded and reached into his pockets. Slowly she pulled out his wallet and ran behind Boris to read his ID and check up on him. On the side Maverick snickered.

He shook his head and smirked as she ran behind the giant man. His eyes traveled upward to the young man who was the last to join them. It was obvious to tell that he was uncomfortable, but that was the generally feeling all around. "I'm certain that you are hungry and thirsty. Please, help yourselves to anything I have."

"I don't mind if I do," Sven said as he found a box of vintage cigars. He quickly stuffed them in his pocket and walked along the corridors of this underground fortress of sorts. There were so many computers and gadgets; he was impressed they were still able to run.

Hailey crawled up Boris and to his shoulder again. She pulled out things from the wallet and dropped them one by one until she found an old picture of Doc and the man. Dropping the wallet all together, she stuck the picture in her little purse then hugged Boris's head again.

As soon as Maverick got to one of the computers, he send his maid an email about where he was and to come as soon as she could to help care for Angelia. Evana yawned as she walked around looking at nothing in particular.

Lana stayed at the entrance of the room debating whether or not her village had been right and she didn't belong anywhere. She pressed her back to a wall and ran her hands over her home made bag while waiting.

Boris was content to let the little girl crawl all over him. She was a spunky little thing, and he already realized he wouldn't be able to say no to her.

While Sven and Sarah went their own separate ways to loot the place, Xavier was content to watch the people with interest. It was one thing to know someone. It was something entirely to truly see them in action. "So, Maven. You come from a small village correct?"

Maven nodded slowly. "Yes.... That is why I am confused as to why you need me."

Xavier just smiled. "Everyone has talents that will be useful on this adventure of ours. You may not understand it, but in time you will." He looked over at Lana and motioned her over. "Lana, Maven. Maven, Lana."

Maven's cheeks turned red as he bowed to the girl. "It is a pleasure to meet you ma'am."

Was he speaking...to her? Lana blushed and pressed harder against the wall. "I...um...yes...pleasure..." she said in a light voice. That sounded a lot better in her head.

"So as fun as it has been stealing from you, why the hell did you send us these letters?" Sarah plopped down into a chair and relaxed. "I was promised something, and I came all this way so you better talk."Xavier nodded. "Yes. I believe that I should indeed explain my intentions." Going over to his computer, he hit a switch and a holographic image was quickly displayed for all to see. "The natural resources of this planet will only sustain us for another six months at best. After which we simply run out of food and water and perish."

Maverick looked down at Angelia. His face softened and he looked at Xavier. "What...can I do about it?"

"Before the war there was a group of scientist working on something known as the A.R.K.. In short, it stands for Anatomical Rejuvenating Kit. It was a miracle project which contains the DNA and genetic code for everything that this world possessed before the war. It was said that it could make the ground fertile and the water pure. In short this device could very well save everyone's lives."

"That's really touching glasses, but I'm not here to save the world. I'm here to get rich," Sven said as he lit his match and began to puff on the cigar.

"The vault where the A.R.K. is supposedly stored also contains items, weapons, armors, and vehicles from the prewar era. You can take whatever you desire from there and live as a king off of it."

"And what about me?"

Xavier smirked and hit another key. "The good general is also getting a team together to find the vault. By going with this group, your paths will eventually meet."

Maven shifted as he listened to everyone. He was curious how saving the world would help him with his problem, but he really didn't want to ask it out loud and have all eyes upon him.

"Saving the world wasn't what I had in mind when I read your letter. But if we have no other choice, then I will gladly do whatever you need."

Hailey ran her hand over the holo. Was this was Doc wanted her to do? But she was so very small...would they really need her?

"I'll do it," Maverick said as he slipped a bottle into Angelia's mouth. "I'll do anything to ensure a safe future for Angelia."

"How noble," Evana said rolling her eyes. She propped her legs on the table. "I have nothing better to do and if the world is going to die, I mind as well do something productive with my time."

Lana stood quickly by the door. Should she go home an warn her village? Should she stay and try to be of some use? These people were so very different. They didn't look at her oddly and they didn't ask a lot of questions about her appearance. Was she suppose to try and fit in with a crowd she knew nothing about with what little confidence she had?

"Did you ask for Nanny Doc's help?" Hailey asked. It was the first time for the day that her voice was soft and even.
