Maven looked at her with wide eyes. "Lana..."

"Yes," she nodded. "Um...Skyla wanted me to tell you...she's sorry and that...she will see you in a week and a half..."

"What? Where is she?" he demanded.

Lana opened her old room door. She flicked on the light showing that Skyla looked as if she was in a deep sleep. Her heart was on the monitor and she had an IV in as well as a feeding tube. A breathing mask was off to the side for emergency purposes.

Maven's faced softened as he saw this.
"What...I mean...what happened?"

"She's been...flooded with too many thoughts...too many futures and pasts... She had a break down a few days ago and now she's trying to fix things. She said she's going to try and establish some walls to keep things back or hidden...but she said that she saw a future where it failed and where it succeeded so there is no telling if she does it correctly or not..."

"And she chose now, the moment I would wake up to do this?"

"She said she had seen the future where she is awake when you finally remembered everything...she said it was unpleasant...you were very cold..." Lana said softly.

"So in other words she's hiding."

Lana nodded. "If I were her...I don't think I would ever wake up... Seeing the future...has it's consequences..."

"Perhaps she won't," he whispered as he turned away from her.

"And...you don't care..." she whispered. "No wonder she didn't want to be around for this... Even I feel my heart ache at the look on your face." She looked at the hall as Angelia started crying. "I have to go," she said and quickly left.

Maven closed his eyes and shook his head. Once she was gone he looked back at Skyla.
"Why?" he whispered. "If you saw the future. Why? Do you have any idea where I was? Do you any idea what it's like to be...to be in a paradise only to be brought back here? If you were going to bring someone back...there were others who deserved it so much more than me."

Lana sat on the end of Maverick's bed as she fed Angelia. Maverick crawled out from under the covers and moved behind her with a yawn. He kissed her neck. "I have...a lot to tell you..."

Boris stood outside and yawned. He'd taken to spending most of his time outdoors. When he was inside he felt too cramped up, too suffocated with everyone around him. Mainly it was because of her and him. Because of them.... He couldn't think straight. He couldn't sleep. All he could do was think about his daughter. The one he should be holding in his arms right now.

Maverick had let everyone know they were leaving for the first missing piece two days ago. On this faithful morning, they were packing and getting ready to go. Evana was the first one to finish packing and Hailey was the next one. She held Xavier's hand with a small look on her face. She didn't want to go. She didn't have anyone to take care of her and Boss was scaring her with all of his sudden changes. Every time she saw him, he had a hard, mad look on his face. She huddled next to Xavier, as if hiding behind his leg.

Xavier patted her head and smiled.
"It will be okay, Hailey. I promise," he whispered as he picked her up and scooped her into his arms.

"I don't want to go..." she whispered and laid her head on his shoulder.

"Why not?" He slowly stroked her back as he rocked her.

"I'm scared..."

"Of what?"

"Teddy..."

He gave her a small smile. "Boris would never hurt you for anything in the world."

That didn't make things better. Maverick came out the room and smiled as he gave his bag to Evana to put it in the car. "Hailey, Lana told me you don't want to go with us. What if I promise to take care of you myself?"

She shook her head.

"I'll sing you to sleep and tuck you in. I'll even play with you," he promised.

She looked at Xavier.

Xavier nodded.
"Hailey, would you like to take your book with you?"

"Yes," she said.

"I'll read it to you ever night," Maverick offered. She hesitated but nodded. Reaching out, Maverick took her in his arms and wrapped her in a small blanket. "You can sleep for a little longer."

"I don't want to be in the back seat!" she cried.

He rubbed her back and took the book from Xavier.
"You can sit up front with Evana and me."

Hailey nodded against him and rested her head on his chest as he rubbed her back. He kissed Lana's forehead then Angelia's forehead and went to the car.

"Take care of her," Xavier whispered.

Boris turned around when he heard everyone coming out. He grabbed his bag and nodded, surprised to see Hailey holding onto Maverick. He was about to ask what was going on when his eyes fell on Maven.
"I see that you are up and about. How lucky for us."

"Easy, Boris. Let's save it for the guys who are shooting at us," Sven said uneasily, his hand sliding to his gun as he watched the Russian stare down Maven.

Maven walked up to Boris and knelt before him, his head bowed.
"I am sorry," he whispered.

"Sorry! You think that sorry is enough to-" He stopped as he saw the look in Hailey's eyes. He tried to calm down, but he was near his breaking point. "Whatever. Let's just get this over with."

Hailey's body shook in Maverick's arms. She buried her small face in his shoulder as Maverick got behind the wheel. "Ok, you can sit-" he started as he pulled her to sit next to him.

"No!" she cried. "I don't want to!"

"Ok, ok," he said and let her get back in his lap. Moving to the passenger seat, Sarah got behind the wheel instead.

Boris sighed as he saw the fear in her eyes. She feared him. Looking down at his large hands, he watched them ball into fists. Closing his eyes, he sat in the back and tried to sleep. That was the only way he was going to make it through this without doing something he was going to regret.

"So where to first?" Sarah asked as she pulled away from Xavier's.

Maverick pulled up the map and showed her.

"That flatlands?" She smirked and nodded. "Great. I wish I'd brought some bug repellant."

"We will be ok. We are just picking up something and coming back. It's a four day trip."

"When has anything we've ever done been as easy as we thought it would be?"

"A guy can hope," he said as he stroked Hailey's back. She had calmed down and now was fight sleep.

"Yeah, well hoping will only get you so far." Sven lit his cigarette, sighing as he took a long draw. "God I've missed you."

"Put down the window, jackass. Hailey is still in the car," Evana said as she pushed him against the door.

He rolled his eyes and muttered as he started to roll the window down.
"Oh come on! I've smoked around her before."

"Do it," Boris growled.

Sven sighed and nodded.

"Yes you have, but outside not in a car without the windows done."

"Fine. The windows are down. Happy?"

"Yes."

"Yes."

"Yes."

"Yes."

Sven just rolled his eyes. "It's a fucking conspiracy."

"Children are few and far between. Their health is important for our future."

"And just what makes you think that cigarettes risk their health? I mean, compared to the bullets, knives, monsters, and radioactive waste we put in front of her, I think my smoke should be the least of your worries."

"Protecting them from the obvious things are all we can do. And wounds can heal. As long as they stay away from the radioactivity that's out as well. Cancer...from secondhand smoke...is a whole other story. And if Hailey or Angelia turns out to have it..."

"I will kill you."

"And he will have help doing it."

"I've been smoking a pack a day for fifteen years. It hasn't hurt me. I doubt a small puff of some of my smoke will hurt her."

"How about you just do the right thing."

"The window is down isn't it? My smoke is going out the window. She'll be fine. I'll just keep it rolled down."

"Now you can work on that whole shutting up thing."

He smirked and shook his head. "Never going to happen. You'd miss my voice too much."

She smirked. "I know because I just love you so much!" she said and fluttered her eyes. "And I want to spend the rest of my life with you and have your babies!"

Maverick couldn't help but laugh and looked back at her as she batted her eyes and put on a pouty face so sarcastically.

Sven nodded.
"See. Was that so hard?" Taking her hand, he reached into his coat, popped open a box and held out a ring. "You'll need this wifey."

Evana paled and pulled her hand from him. Her eyes narrowed. "Haha. Very funny."

"What? You don't want to be with me forever anymore?"

"It was a joke."

"Oh...well that does leave me in an awkward spot. Oh well. Guess I'll just have to give this ring to the next lucky lady."

"Stop the car." Evana looked at Sarah. "Stop the fucking car!"

Sarah was surprised by her sudden outburst. Her feet quickly slammed on the brakes, the car sliding to a halt. Evana opened the door and pushed Sven out. She got out after him and slammed the door. The whole car rocked. Maverick looked out the window as Evana roughly pulled Sven to a large thing of rock. She moved behind them, out of eye sight and hearing. She pushed him against the rocks.

"Whoa! Calm the fuck down, Evana. No need to get your panties in a wad," he muttered as he was forced against the rock.

"That had to have been the most fucked up joke you have ever pulled."

"Why?"

She reached in his pocket and grabbed the ring out. "Who the hell carries these things around?!"

"Someone who values women enough to marry them at a moment's notice."

"No one is around to find your jokes funny!" she yelled and threw it at him. "I'm not laughing!"

"Hey! Careful with that!" He said as he caught it. "It's a family heirloom."

"I swear to God I will kill you right here and leave you body if you don't get serious! Why did you do that!?"

"As a joke! Why do you think that I did it? For that reason, why does it bother you so fucking much?"

"You don't joke about shit like that!" she yelled. She punched the rock behind him and it crumbled. The others in the car could see them now. Evana angrily stomped back to the car and got in. "Leave his ass for all I care."

Sven watched her get back into the car. His jaw dropped and he ran a hand through his hair as everything finally made sense. "Fuck me," he whispered. Shaking his head, he put the ring back into his pocket and climbed into the car, trying to keep distance between him and Evana.

Evana crossed her arms, her body shaking. She was doing her best to keep her hands to herself and not beat him to a blood pulp. Maverick nodded to Sarah and once again they started back on the road.

"The ring belongs to my wife," Sven whispered as he relaxed in his seat and pulled his hat down, figuring that he owed her at least that much.

"Do not talk to me. Not ever again," she whispered back.

"Can do."

"That classifies as talking!"

"No. It's whispering. There is a difference."

Evana opened the door again and kicked him out as the car was still moving. She then shut the door back.

"Evana!" Sarah yelled, slammed on the brakes, watching Sven roll around on the ground.

"Damn it! Get out and get him!"

"No!"

"Stop acting like a child!"

"Fuck you!"

Maven sighed. All that yelling was making his head hurt. Getting out of the car, he went and helped Sven up. Other than a few cuts and tears, no damage was done to his body. His pride, however, was wounded. Evana kept her arms crossed and her eyes hard.

Sven limped into the car as Maven slid in behind him.
"That was uncalled for."

"Keep talking and I'll make sure you can't stand back up the next time I do it."

"You'd like me on my back wouldn't you?" He frowned and closed his eyes, trying really hard not to get mean. He didn't like to make dames cry.

"Nope. I just want to break them."

"Right. Sounds wonderful."

"Want me to test that theory?"

"Evana, shut up or I'll break your legs!"

She sat back in her seat and groaned with hard eyes.

Sarah just sighed as she pressed down harder on the gas. The sooner they got there the better. At least then their pent up aggression could be focused on the enemy.
