Original Stories Fan Fiction ❯ Tiamat: The Other World ❯ Kaida... ( Prologue )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

As the sun went down and stars began to fill the sky, a thin beam of light shot down from above.

It was quiet. There was no one nearby to see it.

Good. This had to be kept a secret. As long as no one knew where she was, she was safe.

“You will be safe here, `Little Dragon',” said a voice, as two cloaked figures stepped from the light. One of them held a small parcel that fit in the palm of her hand.

She looked at the little bundle lovingly and smiled to herself, although her smile wasn't visible to anyone else, due to the hood covering her face.

“Stop that, Mariko,” said the other cloaked figure. “We are here to deliver the jewel. Nothing more.”

“Yes…” Mariko looked at the little bundle in her hand and opened the cloth to reveal a small, rose-shaped crystal.

The beam disappeared behind the two, and they began to walk toward a small set of lights in the distance.

The lights belonged to a house. The house belonged to a young couple, “newly married.” They would be her guardians until the time came for her to return…

“Mariko,” said the cloaked man as they came to the front door.

She nodded.

Just as she was about to knock, the door opened. In the doorway stood a man in his early 30s and a woman who looked to be about the same age.

The woman looked down at the jewel in Mariko's hands. “That is…”

“Yes,” said the cloaked man. “You understand that you may tell no one of this. She is to be kept secret from our kind, friend and foe alike.”

“Yes,” said the man in the doorway.

Mariko held the jewel out in front of her with a forlorn expression on her face, and mumbled a short incantation.

The jewel began to glow, and in a flash of light, became a young girl. Her hair was white and glowed in the moonlight. Her skin was pale and beautiful.

The man in the doorway tenderly took her from Mariko's arms.

The cloaked man looked at the girl, then at the couple. “Have you thought of a name for her while she stays here?”

“Yes, Lord Hisao,” replied the man. “She is our Secret, and her name will be Rune.”

Author's Note: Some interesting things to know that might help you follow this story later on (I will keep reminding you of these things and explaining them more throughout the story, by the way):

The Goddess Tiamat in Mythology:
She gives birth to the first generation of gods; she later makes war upon them and is split in two by the storm-god Marduk, who uses her body to form the heavens and the earth.

The Goddess Gaia in Mythology:
Her sacred animals are the serpent, the lunar bull, the pig, and bees. In her hand the narcotic poppy may be transmuted to a pomegranate.
Some who worship Gaia attempt to get closer to “Mother Earth” by becoming unconcerned with material things and more in tune with nature.
