"We should keep walking," he protested as she sat down. "We need to make up for lost time. I can keep you safe through the night."
She ignored him and laid down. He frowned and reached down. Lifting her small frame up, he tossed her over his shoulder. She wanted to be like that. Fine. He would treat her like the child she was.
Her face hardened and she kneed him in the stomach. When he dropped her, she landed on her feet. Her body turned and her foot connected with his face and he fell back. "Keep your hands off me!"
His head snapped forward and he glared at her. "We're walking through the night. So get up."
"You are not in charge of me," she snapped.
"And you're not in charge of me," he spat.
She sat back down. "I'm not going out at night. It's suicide."
"Not with me it isn't."
She laid back down. He couldn't move any farther from her. His collar was already beeping at him in warning. Eventually he had no choice but to move and sit down beside her. Aura closed her eyes and slipped to sleep, the whole time hating him just a little more.
Blood spattered her sleeping form as two men fell into pieces beside her. It was late, she had been asleep for hours, but now people were starting to get curious and coming toward their hiding spot. Aura's eyes opened when the blood hit her face. She quickly sat up and pulled her tool from her pocket. It beeped and transformed into a gun.
He reached down and grabbed her, throwing her over his shoulder. "Stay there and don't fight," he ordered.
She nodded slowly. At least she listened to him when it counted. Running out, he jumped out of a broken window, falling down two stories, he landed and started running again. Very few men could see them in the darkness, but the few that could were sliced down, their guns no use against the quick flash of his blades. Twirling and lunging, he sliced through metal and men as if they were butter. Aura couldn't even fire her gun off with how fast he was. She just clung to him and held on.
Seeing as how he already had her over his shoulder, he started running. He kept running well past the area of danger, not wanting to lose his momentum. It was far better for him to keep her like this so he could make better time. "There still might be threats. Just try to get comfortable."
She moved around and twisted her body until she was on his back. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she rested her head between his shoulder blades. That was a little more comfortable than he had intended her to be, but it worked. She wasn't complaining and that was a miracle enough. He kept moving until the morning sun rose across the plains and sounds of gunfire were nothing more than a small memory. Aura had fallen asleep on his back, breathing softly and easy. His pace slowed to a crawl when he started to grow tired. He shifted her off his back and into his arms so he could sheath his sword. She weighed a lot less than his sword and it would be easier to carry her this way. Of course it would help if he knew where in the hell he was going. Rather than wake her, however, he continued to walk in the direction he had been going while hoping for the best.
Aura woke to stare at his face. She shifted in his arms and pulled out her digital map. Her eyes widened. "You...have made up a lot of time...a whole days worth..."
He nodded slowly. "This is why we should travel at night."
"And risk our lives?"
"We're alive aren't we?"
"Just put me down..."
With that he dropped her. She landed on her feet and straightened herself. Not looking at him, she started following the map.
"So where to now?" he asked, stretching his arms to get the stiffness out of carrying her all night.
"West. That's good. We will be going through some of the dessert. Not many people live there. It will be quiet, however, there will be nothing to eat or drink so we will have to hurry through it."
"Which means we will have to travel during the night," he smirked.
She nodded. "Full days. None stop."
"Sounds like fun. How long till we hit the dessert?"
"Not long. The end of the day."
"Okay. Then we'll raid the buildings for some supplies in case anything should happen out there." She nodded.
They began searching buildings, but there wasn't much to find. A few cans of things which were probably going to poison them. Some bottles of liquid. A few packets of tablets which she insisted were something called 'meal pills', but nothing which seemed like it would truly last them through the dessert.
"I guess we will have to make due," she sighed. "Let's go."
"Get on my back," he said, shifting his sword into his hands so that she could get on his back. "I can make better time than you can."
"But you haven't slept yet."
"I know that.... But you said that we should hurry. I can sleep once we make it through the dessert."
"If you feel it necessary," she said softly. Pulling up the digital map she held it up for him. "If you get off track, I'll let you know," she said before getting on his back.
Taking a deep breath, he shifted her to a more comfortable position and started to run. He kept his sprint steady yet quick. It wasn't long before the long forgotten city gave way to nothing more than sinking sand which slowed even him down. The sun was blazing down on them and all there was to see were the rolling hills of sand as far as the eye could see.
Aura pulled the blanket out and held it over his head. "For shade...so you don't burn..."
"Oh...thanks," he replied. "I can't remember ever feeling anything this hot before. Though...I guess that is not saying much."
She reached in her bag again and handed him a pill. "Here. It's a cooling pill. It cools your body down for about twenty four hours."
"My hands are kind of full right now," he said, trying to shift the sword and their supplies so that he could get a hand free.
She moved the pill to his lips. "Open." When he did, she dropped it inside.
The effects were almost instant. He shuddered as the cooling effect worked its way through his body. "Wow...uh...thanks. Much better."
"Yeah," she said and kept the blanket over his head like a shield.
They traveled in silence, mainly to conserve their strength. When night came the temperature dropped drastically, going from over a hundred degrees down to the low thirties. Every time he took a breath he could see frost escape. His eyes scanned the dark horizon, he moved just to keep his body warm. It would take days to cross this dessert, and this was only the first of many. "We still heading in the right direction?"
"Yeah," she whispered as she wrapped the blanket around him and pressed herself to his back while rubbing his arms to keep him warm.
He nodded and kept pressing forward. Never stopping. Never resting. Never slowing down. In a week's time he stepped out of the forsaken dessert and into a small town. He nearly cried out in joy to get some shelter from the heat and cold. His legs were like lead and by the time he took them inside he ended up collapsing on the ground. "Made it." Sleep sounded good. It sounded really really good.
She held his hand and pulled him to an Inn. "Hi, I would like a room please. And some meals," she said. Reaching in her pocket she pulled out some money and handed it to the person. She was giving a chip and told to go to the third floor.
Still pulling him, she went to the third floor. The chip opened the door and she helped him to the bed. A second later, a little door on the wall dinged and she opened it, revealing two hot meals. It didn't matter to him though. By the time he hit the bed he was hard and fast asleep. She left the meals in the door so that it would stay hot. Going to the bathroom, she closed the door and took her clothes off. Her arm was hurting bad from the crash and the wound needed cleaning. Stepping in the scanner to get cleaned, she pushed the button for a full wash. The glass doors closed and soapy water poured over her. She scrubbed clean then waited as the jets came on and dried her. Afterward, she stepped out and slipped her clothes in a door next to the scanner. She waited patiently for a few minutes. It dinged and she pulled her clothes out, fully washed and dried, mended and almost as good as new. Dressing, she walked out and went to the bed.
In his deep slumber, he moved over and draped and arm over her, completely dead to the world. She pushed him away and moved to the other end of the bed. He didn't budge after that. His sword rested on the ground by his bed and his steady breathing came in small, shallow breaths. He slept like that for two days, completely lost in slumber before finally awaking once more. Aura set a plate in his lap then went back to cleaning her tool.
"Where are we?" he asked with a yawn. The food looked a lot better than what they had been eating. He practically devoured it whole in only a few seconds.
"An Inn. Only two days from my home."
He smiled when he heard that. Only two days? Great! Then he would be free from this and he could return to Heaven.
She set her tool by the window as it changed to a solar disk to soak up light.
Setting his food aside, he slowly got up and went to the bathroom. As soon as he stepped in it he had to stop and look around. This stuff wasn't like anything he had seen before. At least, not that he could remember. Frowning, he stood there pressing buttons, trying to figure out how it worked. "Damn technology."
She grabbed his hand. "Stop it. You'll damage the circuits. Look, press this to shower and wash up. Put your clothes in this to clean them. Ok?"
"Oh...sure. I would have figured it out...eventually."
Groaning, she walked out and shut the door.
Stripping out of his clothes, he stretched in front of the mirror and examined his body. Long scars covered most of his flesh and as he ran his hand over his back he felt something which caused him alarm. Panicking, he started to breath hard, his eyes fogging over as memories flashed before him. Pain. So much pain. Injections. Burning. Screaming. Blood. The sink gave way, crushed beneath his hands as he fell down to his knees.
"Please tell me you didn't break something! I can't pay for that!"
There was no reply. He remained like that for several minutes, trying to catch his breath and make sense of the images and sensations he had just felt. Slowly he stood, staring at the broken sink with a frown. "It's...nothing...."
"Hurry up...we'll have to sneak out the window now..."
He nodded even though she couldn't see it. Pushing the buttons she had told him to resulted in him feeling violated by a shower. At least he was dry and clean as were his clothes. Slipping them on, he stepped out, shifting against his shirt and coat while grabbing for his sword. "We should go."
She grabbed her things then got on the window seal. Looking at the building next door, she jumped and landed on the seal a floor below. She kept going back and forth until she was on the ground.
He didn't bother with anything as fancy as that. He simply stepped out of the window and fell to the ground below. "Where to now?"
She pointed and they started off. By night, the next day, she would be home. She couldn't wait.
Once they were there safely, he would leave and forget about this troublesome child. He smiled to himself as they walked down the deserted streets. Something caught his attention as they walked. The streets were deserted. Generally when they came to a town there were people laughing, working and living. But this town was dead. Why?
Shoving Aura out of the way, he drew his sword just in time to deflect a blast aimed for his head.
"Well, well, well...looks like you have some moves," a man said. He was tall and lanky, dark hair covered his face and armor protected his flesh. In his hand was a large blaster, behind him was a small battalion of what looked to be...robots?
"What the hell are those?"
Aura scanned him and frowned. "The Puppet Master. Class B and dangerous..." This was not how she hoped things would go.
"Class B? What does that mean?"
The man grinned and pointed his gun at him. "It means that I'm not to be fucked with." He looked over at Aura, his eyes widening as he saw the tool in her hand. "An omni tool? No way! I've been looking for one of those for years! This must be my lucky day."
"Sorry, I don't give freebies," she said. It transformed into a bow and she pulled it back. Her ring lit up and an arrow formed. She pointed it at him.
No sooner did she do that then he fired, his blast slamming into her shoulder and sending her flying back..
"Aura!" He hissed as he moved back. His collar sending that damn energy coursing through him. That blast had moved her too far away. In one leap he was beside her, trying to keep his collar from yelling at him.
She stood. Her shoulder hurt like hell and she was bleeding bad, but her face was hard. "I'm fine." She fired the arrow and hit the Puppet master in the same spot he had hit her.
As soon as her energy bolt hit him, his armor began to glow as it absorbed the impact. "Nice try, but my armor is top of the line. It absorbs energy directed against it." Snapping his fingers, the robots at his command moved forward. "Take them down and bring me that tool.""Stay behind me," he ordered, moving in front of her as he readied himself. He didn't know what these things were, but they could be destroyed. He knew that much. So all he had to do was kill them.
"Not this time. This is my work," she said. She ran into the robots. There were flashes and out bangs as she disappeared in them. Sparks few about and pieces went flying. She grabbed one of them and chunked it at the Puppet Mastered feet. Her hand opened and bolts fell from her palm. Suddenly all the robots fell apart.
The Puppet Master's eyes widened and a curse fell from his lips. "Who the hell are you? No one knows tech better than me!"
"Tinker. Class B. And tech is my business," she said sharply.
"You're a Class B? Please. No child could comprehend the wonders and marvels of my work!" Raising his hand, the metallic pieces of the robots shot back together, reforming and mending themselves before her very eyes. "Kill her."
"As if," she rolled her eyes. Her tool transformed. She kicked one of the robots in the face before starting to work on it. She was quick. Very quick. Moving wires around and doing the same thing over and over to each robot while dodging and moving. Slow she stood. "Stop!" Suddenly...they all froze. She pointed to the Puppet Master. "Attack." Without hesitation, they started to the Puppet Master.
With a growl of frustration he pulled out a switch. "Detonate." Pressing the button, all the robots around her began to blink. Then all at once they erupted into a burning inferno of shrapnel and flame.
"You really should stay away from explosions," he said as he stared down at her, flames licking at his clothes. "They're not really good for my health...." He'd managed to grab her right before the robots went post apocalyptic on her. Kneeling down as blood poured from the both of them, he picked up his sword. He'd let her have her fun, but now he was ending this.
"Halt under the name of Heaven's declaration 419!" He froze when he heard that. Looking up he watched as three birds descended from the sky. Only...they were too big to be birds, and as they drew closer he saw they had the form of men.
"Aw fuck. Angels!" The Puppet Master yelled and fired into the sky at one. The angel flew around the blast and lunged at him. A large spear tore through his chest, pinning him to the ground.
Aura froze. She hadn't seen real angels before. They were so...pretty.
The three white garbed men landed gracefully before them. Decked out in the finest armor and gear which flowed like silk yet was harder than the strongest metal. The lead one, a young man with flowing white hair reached out and ripped his blue and gold spear from the Puppet Master's corpse. "Threat neutralized," he said to no one in particular, though the way he talked made it seem as if someone somewhere understood the meaning to his words. He couldn't move. He couldn't breathe. His entire body was simply frozen as he stared at these beings. They were...angels? He had to blink the blood away from his face. Shrapnel had embedded above his forehead causing blood to cover most of his face, making it hard to see these so called celestial beings.Ever so slowly the angels turned to them, their golden eyes hard and demanded. "Who are you?"
"Tinker. Class B. Non-threat," she stated. Why didn't he just scan her?
"And your friend? Who is he?" Two angels flanked to either side of them. One held a nasty mace while the other held a delicate sword. They were cautious and on edge. The one with the sword held something similar to Aura's tool, only smaller and shinier. "I'm not getting any readings. Those robots must have EMP's built into them. It is messing with our tech," he informed his leader.
"He's...my brother. He's a non-threat. We are just heading home," she said. She moved to him and helped him stand, ignoring her wounds.
"Your brother?" The man eyed him carefully before frowning and cleaning off his spear. "Tinker, correct? We are currently in pursuit of an escaped fugitive. A class S threat. If you come across any information on his whereabouts we would compensate you greatly. Perhaps even reward you with a place in Heaven."
"That is very kind of you. If I see or hear of him, I will send word," she promised.
"Your faith in Heaven shall be rewarded." Reaching into his cloth, he tossed her a chip. "Go and get your wounds taken care of." Grabbing the Puppet Master’s body, the three of them effortlessly shot into the air.
She smiled. "Wow...a health chip." After watching them leave she went to a health station attached to the wall. She didn't go first however. Placing the chip in the machine she let it scan the guy she was helping to stand. It beeped then a needle came out. She stuck it in his arm then slid him to the ground and put a mouth clinch in his mouth. She then let it scan herself then stuck herself with a needle. She bit on a mouth guard while the chip popped out and turned into dust. Sliding to the ground next to him, she closed her eyes as her wounds healed painfully, tears sliding down her cheeks, though she didn't make a sound.
They sat like that until their wounds healed and they could move again. "Who...were those people?" He had taken his bite guard out and was staring at her. "And why did you lie to them and tell them I was your brother?"
She took the mouth guard out and wiped her face. "Because...I think they were looking for you. And I don't want you anywhere near Heaven... They are angels, the guardians, the law of Heaven. Messing with them is messing with death. They are very kind though...as long as you don't give them reason not to be." She stood and started walking.
"Heaven...." He stood and followed after her. "If they can take me to Heaven then I want them to. How do I contact them to get them to come back?"
"I'm not telling you," she said. "I'm almost home," she whispered. Picking up the pace, she started running. She needed to make up some time.
"Fine. I'll just find out on my own." She was running now, and he ran with her. The sooner he got her home the better.
In two days, they were in what looked like a jungle. Aura navigated through it with ease. There seemed to be nothing leaving there but wild life. And if you didn't know your way around, you could easily end up walking in circles for hours. She smiled as they came upon a large tree. Going to it she knocked on the trunk and a door opened. She walked in and ushered him in. "Lights on please," she said. The lights flickered and came on. The large tree had been hollowed out though it was still large and alive. Aura had made it her home. It was mostly only one very large room with lots of space. There was a set of stairs that led up and on that floor was her room. In her room was another set of stairs that lead to another floor which was her work room where all her gadgets were. On this floor, the bottom floor, was her sitting room and kitchen. She set her bag down. "Everything is mostly solar powered. I have panels on the top of the tree that soaks up the sun’s rays and stores the energy in the trunk. It's then filtered and fished to my things."
"That's great. You're home now. Get this collar off of me," he said, sitting his sword down and pulling his jacket off so that she could have access to his neck.
"No," she said. Ignoring him she went upstairs to her room. Setting her things down she walked to the bathroom and cleaned up then changed.
He ran up the stairs to her room. She was in the middle of changing but he didn't care. "We had a deal! Take it off!"
She threw a wrench at him and hit him in the forehead. Quickly she turned her back to him. "What is your problem!?"
"The metal death device attached to my neck!" he snapped, stepping into her bathroom and towering over her.
"I'm naked you pervert!" she screamed. She slammed her fingers in his eyes and blinded him. Quickly dodging him she grabbed her clothes and dressed and she jumped from the hole where her stairs were and landed on the bottom floor.
He yelled as he held his eyes. "I couldn't care less about seeing a child naked! I just want this damn thing off!"
"I'm not letting you touch Heaven! So get over it! And I'm not a child! I could kill you in a flash!"
He landed before her and laughed. "Is that why you needed my help? Because you're so powerful you could kill me? Just take the damn collar off and I will leave you alone, you little girl!"
"Stop calling me a little girl and I'm not taking it off, old man!"
"You are a little girl! Nothing more than a dumb child meddling in this she has no place in! We had a deal, now either uphold that deal or I will kill you myself. For all I know I can survive whatever this collar does, but I know for certain you can't survive without a head."
She stepped up to him and stared up at him. "Then go ahead and kill me."
