Prologue

A little boy of five sat in a large plastic chair, swinging his short legs, looking around with the innocent curiosity of a child. Early this morning, his parents had woken him, they ate a quick breakfast of oatmeal and bananas, then drove three hours to the building they now resided. After filling out numerous documents, his parents were now in another room, conversing with several men in white.

The boy hopped down from the chair and made his way to the window, peeking through. His father had his arms wrapped around his sobbing wife as he shook the hand of one of the men in white. The child cocked his head to the side curiously, much like a little bird, and put his hands and face up against the window, leaning in close enough to scrunch his nose.

Why is Mama crying?

Everyone in the room turned toward the door, and the boy ran back to the chair, jumping up into it and resuming his kicking.

His mother and father came out first, his mother trying to hold her tears in. She kneeled down, taking his hands in hers and squeezing.

“Now, Honey, you know that your father and I are having trouble supporting the three of us right now,” she said, sniffling and clearing her throat. He looked at her with love and worry.

“Don’t cry, Mama.” He reached up and wiped a falling tear from her cheek. She let out a choked sob and stood, turning away.

His father took over at this point, kneeling as his mother had. “Now, Son, what your mother is trying to say is that we found a new, better home for you, at least until we can get back on our feet.”

The boy looked at his father in confusion. “A new home?”

His father smiled. “Yes, Son. You’re going to be living with the nice people here for a little while. But don’t worry, it won’t be forever.”

The man in white walked up behind the boy, putting his hands on the child’s shoulders. He turned him around and began walking back down the hall.

The boy, by this time, was in tears as the man in white led him away.

“Mama! Daddy! I didn’t mean to make you mad! I’ll be good, I promise! Daddy!” He reached toward them, his eyes wide and frightened, spilling tears.

His mother took a step forward, only to be gently held back by his father. “You did nothing wrong, Son. Everything’s going to be fine, you’ll see.” He hugged his wife close to him.

His mother and father stood together, his mothers shoulders shaking as she hid her face and tears in her husband's shoulder.

“Mama!”

A/N: I'm sorry if this seemed rushed. I didn't know how else to do it, and this turned out to be the finished product. I should be installing chapter 1...Well, I might do it today, since this was so short, and not all that good. Yeah, I think I'll do that. So ignore the "I should be installing" part.
