-Begin-
“Sometimes I've hated myself because of the thoughts I had. I felt guilty for thinking the way I do. No one liked me. What was I supposed to do? Who knew what the outcome would have been if I had chosen to quit?”
~Ashley A. Reddick
Preface:
It was the first week of Hell…er…high school. Well not high school exactly, like the 3rd year of it. Yes. I was a junior. My name? Azalea Konobi, Year 3, Class 1. I was already tired of it. The questions of what you did over summer break, what you learned last year, what kind of books you read, your interests or goals. You name it…they asked.
'This day…sucks…' I was angry, as if you couldn't tell.
I had my hand up for a moment, waiting to speak, but the stupid lady never called on me. I was never one to be involved in class discussions, but the topic caught my interest. Surprising. Well, it wasn't long before she called on me and I stood to speak.
“It's…not expected the different species will get along. It is encourages though. There is a group of outsiders in every species that cause trouble and make negative news for the rest. Let's take humans, demons, and vampires for example. One human kills a demon and the demon species begins to hate all humans, not the one. The same is true for vampires. There are some vampires who do not drink human blood. You can say they are…quite fond of humans as friends. Yet, these same vegetarian vampires are hated because they are just that. They are vampires. So can you really judge an entire species based on the actions of one person, demon, or vampire? I think not.”
What did any of that matter to me anyway? I was in high school and all that talk of demons or vampires was childish. We realized that those species didn't exist by grade 5. We did live in a crazy world though...so who's to say? I took my seat and turned my head to look out the window as the teacher lady took my thoughts into consideration. Even on the first day there was already a gym class outside finishing their laps. Well…that's actually when I first noticed her.
“That will be all for today. Dismissed.” The one word rang in my head and I felt relieved as I turned to grab my black messenger bag. I took the book off my desk and jammed it into my bag as I stood quietly. The bag wasn't as heavy as I expected, but then again…it was only the 3rd class of 6. These teachers had a real bad habit of giving books and homework on the first day.
“Azalea…could you…stay for a bit?”
`Great..' I thought, clearly annoyed. 'Seems like I have a fan.'
I walked back to the front of the room with slumped shoulders. The desk I chose to take a seat on belonged to the girl I hated since 5th grade, Lydia Barner. It was one of those “you don't like me I don't like you” type things.
"You wanted to see me?"
She stood behind the podium while straightening papers. My eyes were trained on the window, wondering if the girl was still outside. The bell rang and I realized she was no longer out there. Class was over, but I was sitting here waiting for this woman to say what she needed to.
"Azalea...your opinion on today's discussion was quite strong. I've never heard a reaction like that to the question before. I must say I'm impressed. It was like you believe that demons and vampires exist aside us humans."
I had no freaking idea what she was getting at, but I needed her to make her point so I could leave for lunch. I was starving and I am not very well like when I'm hungry.
"I suppose you should talk to your parents about that. I shouldn't say anymore."
She gestured for me to leave, and I was eager to do just that, though I was curious as to what she meant about talking to my parents. That would have to wait until school was over, but it would leave my mind.
“Azalea!”
`Crap…she's here…' I couldn't get the words out quick enough and turned around to see an old friend dashing toward me.
“No wait! Laura!”
She hugged me tightly and I struggled to breathe. Laura was squeezing me to death almost and while it had been a while since we seen each other, I had to poke her side to make her let go.
“I missed you Azalea! How was your summer? Anything interesting happen to you? Any places? Did you meet a boy? Tell me everything at lunch! Come on!”
I didn't get a chance to say anything to her before she took my hand and dragged me off towards the cafeteria. With any luck, that girl had the same lunch as me. I was seriously hoping that too, but I wasn't expecting to see what I did when I walked in the cafeteria. It looked like people had already made groups or some crap like that. Laura dragged me toward a table where our other friends sat and I took a seat at the edge of the table.
“Well look who decided to join us!”
I groaned and looked toward the direction of the voice and threw a paper ball at the source. “Shut your face Brandon. That stupid woman held me up! What were you talking about again?”
“The new girl! She's in my gym class and she is hot! Her name is Miranda Taylor and dude…I hear she is single!”
That caught my attention and I think Laura knew that, but she hid it as well as I did.
“Ugh…it makes me wonder how and why you stare at her. Besides…how do you know she's single?”
“Duh stupid! Her older brother, Robert. We're like the best of friends. Dude…you wouldn't freaking believe it!”
“Yes Brandon. I'm sure you two are like peas in a pod.”
"That sounded about as straight as a circle.."
He turned to me and stood up as he took his tray to the trashcan along with the others at our table. I tilted my head slightly and she caught my eyes again. Along with Lydia and she rolled her eyes at me before she turned back to her friends and laughed.
“Did you hear me Azalea?”
My head snapped around and I looked at Laura. She was grinning from ear to ear and she poked my cheek.
“I have an idea.”
“Great…”
“Go meet her. You seem like you like Miranda.”
“I'm kinda…preoccupied with other thoughts. Hey Laura, can I ask you something seriously?”
She looked at me and noticed how serious I looked at the grin left her face. She suddenly looked as serious as I was. The words the teacher said were still getting to me.
“Go ahead Azalea.”
“You have to keep this a secret. They'll think I'm crazy for even thinking this. Have you ever believed in demons and vampires?”
"Why do you ask such a thing?"
I made sure my voice was low and almost inaudible. Only she needed to hear this so I whispered it to her instead.
"Because I think they're real..."
