Total Eclipseof the Heart
Talia sat in the back of the classroom. She peered around the classroom at the other students through her dark locks of hair, her bright green eyes trying to learn everyone's faces.
She just moved here in this small town of Cobiskill. Talia was originally from a dark gloomy city up north.
Her family chose this small town to live because they all had a little secret. They were all vampires. Now they weren't your typical vampires you read of in book, or hear of in movies. They could walk in the light like everyone else, and most importantly, didn't turn into bats.
She did have pale skin though, and favored clothing in black so; naturally, she was teased by her peers this first day at her new school.
A blond girl that sat in front of her turned around and sneered at her.
“Hey, what do you think you're doing there? Goths aren't allowed to sit with us popular people.” The girl turned around and snickered with her friends as they continued to taunt her appearance. Though they wouldn't admit it, they all knew that Talia held great beauty. All vampires had enticing features so they could hunt their pray more easily.
Most of the guys in the class let their eyes wander over to her, but never could they risk looking uncool, going out with the new girl, who was most likely by their standards, a Goth.
After she was humiliated by her homeroom teacher, it was time to travel to their next class. In the hallway, she was pushed many of times, lost her books and fell a few times as well. In the shadows, the most attractive young man with long black hair and bright blue eyes watched on in disgust. He just shook his head and headed to his class.
The day went on just like that, with Talia losing her dignity, and this Michael watching on, unknowns to the rest of the school.
Talia went home and faked that everything went great that day. She just thought it was the first day, bad luck she's had ever since she was young.
The next day Talia was more prepared for what was to come, but never did she retaliate to their taunts. After a while, she learned just how to ignore their taunting.
Then one time in the hallway really ticked off Michael. Talia was going through the stairway, and then some guy decided to push her down the stairs. Michael was near by her as she fell and he grabbed her before she hurt herself falling down the long staircase.
Why Michael was doing this for a human he didn't know. See, Michael had a secret of his own. He was a lycan, though more commonly called a werewolf.
Well, as far as Michael known, Talia was a human, but he never knew that she was actually his worst enemy. Vampires and lycans have been having a war for centuries. It had all started with a lycan and a vampire lovers, and a lot of their kind didn't sit well with the fact the species were blending in with each other.
Michael picked her up and glared at the others who had crowded around them.
No one is to set a finger on this young woman again or taunt her in any way, do you understand!” He said this sternly to the group around them. He figured they would listen to him, as everyone seemed to hold him in such high regards.
Most of the girls sneered at him and walked away. The guys looked on in shock at him, that he'd protect her so furiously, when he didn't even do so for his friends.
Michael glared once more at them and escorted Talia to her next class.
“So, you must be Talia.” He began. “My apologizes, we haven't been properly introduced. I'm Michael Duplacy. I'm pleased to meet you Talia” He held out his hand to her.
Talia's face was painted deep red in a blush. She shook his hand shyly then looked at him with confusion in her eyes.
“How is it you know my name M-Michael?” She stammered on his name, she was never very good at speaking to people she didn't know very well, and even more so, those of the opposite gender.
He smiled at her warmly. “I'm more observant then a lot of our peers here. Besides, the way they've been welcoming you has been very poor.”
She smiled back at him, glad to see not everyone here was as arrogant as she first thought.
Over the next few weeks, they got to know each other very well, spending most of their time together whenever they could, like at lunch. It was sometime after December during lunch when they were fairly close because of the weather that people thought the two may have been in going out with each other.
Then, one day in February, Michael invited Talia over to his house.
“So, Talia,” He began, “you haven't answered me yet. Would you like to come over to my house tonight for dinner? My parents are very anxious to meet you.”
She sat there in thought, her green eyes showing just much confusion and thought. She then nodded to him, smiling. “Yes, I would very much like to be a guest at your house this evening.”
When the bus stopped at Michael's house, Talia got off hand in hand with Michael then suddenly realized something. She looked to Michael, her eyes wide. “Michael, I haven't told my parents where I'm at,” She paused briefly, “and they worry when I'm not home by a certain hour. You would have a phone I could use in your home do you? I hate to ask but…”
Michael cut her off with a smile and began walking, gently pulling her with him
“Talia, of course you may use our phone. As long as you're out of trouble, you can do what ever you need to.” He chuckled afterwards.
Talia was known for getting in trouble. Not by choice but by unlikely fate. The two have been joking a lot about that as of late, especially when she somehow got locked in the art room when looking for a painting of hers.
Talia timidly followed him in his front door as they reached it. She looked around in awe at their taste of style. It was very open and sparse of pictures on the walls. The pictures that were hanging up seemed like old antique paintings of wolves and lycans. Her eyes widened at the sight.
Michael looked over to her worriedly as her pulse quickened considerably.
“Talia, is everything alright?”
Talia glared at him and backed away slowly from him, baring her fangs, hissing at him.
She growled, her words sounding like that from an animal. “Lycan…You're a lycan…You've betrayed me Michael...” She flew out the door, running as fast as she could from the house full of her enemy.
She stopped a few blocks away from Michael's house. Talia sat, leaning against the wall, lost in thought.
`How could he do that? He's a dog…Why didn't he smell out my lack of blood, find out I was a vampire and kill me on sight? Or was that his plan from the beginning.'
As she sat there contemplating her situation, Michael was back at his house in complete and utter confusion, still staring out the door where Talia left him. His family, mainly his mother came to see what the racket was about. She saw her son's distress.
”Michael dear, what's wrong?”
Michael looked at his mother, sadness, hurt in his eyes.
“Mum, she was a vampire… A vampire taught of the wrong ways.” He muttered softly, anguish laced in his voice.
With that he bounded up stairs, and hid in his room, tears threatening to fall from his eyes. He was planning on asking her if he could court her.
Talia now slowly made her way back to Michael's house. She had to go apologize for obscene behavior earlier that evening. She reacted badly after the truth came out. She actually had nothing against lycan, and found them quite interesting indeed.
She softly knocked on the door. His mother answered the door, dressed in a shawl of black lace.
“May I help you young one?” Her voice asked with a kindness inside.
Talia nodded to her, and then asked nervously. “Yes, I am in some need of some help. Would you know where Michael is?”
The lady's eyes narrowed slightly but she nodded all the same. Her voice lost its previous kindness. “I do know where my son is at but you will not. I won't allow a vampire with such thoughts in my household.” With that she slammed the door in Talia's face.
Talia sighed and slowly stepped off the steps, her head bowed down shamefully.
Michael looked through his window down at Talia, tears streaming down his face. With that, he bounded down the stairs, flying past his mother and out the door. He ran towards Talia.
“Talia, wait!” He yelled to her as she turned the corner.
She paused at the familiar voice. She glanced back slowly and her eyes went wide. She started to think the wrong thing, again, and she ran once more.
Michael sighed and followed her, and quickly at that. He carefully tackled her, as not to hurt her, not that he could though.
Talia was pinned under him. There was nothing she could do to move or get away from him. She growled softly.
Michael lifted some of his weight off of her.
“Talia, I'm not going to hurt you. I want you to know who we really are. Please don't be afraid of us…” he paused briefly then said softly, “of me.” There was pain in his voice as he spoke.
She turned her head around to him and looked at him mournfully.
“Michael...” she began softly, “…get off me.”
He chuckled and got off of her. A light rain shower trickled from the dark clouds above.
Talia stood up then looked at Michael thoughtfully, and suddenly she tackled him in a hug.
“I'm sorry Michael….I am so sorry.” She whispered to him, holding him close.
He wrapped a comforting arm around her, trying to calm her, as she was quite troubled.
Like that they slowly made their way back to Michael's house, as the rain became heavier and hammered down on them. Michael held her close, more from habit then anything. He was so used to having human girlfriends, it came as an instinct. They came to the door of his house.
Talia looked to him nervously, but he just smiled at her and walked in, with her under his arm.
Michael's mother shuffled to the porch to see who her visitors were. She almost began rant to the young lady under her son's arm, but saw the smile upon his face. She smiled to the two and made her way back out without a word to grab some towels for them.
Talia looked at Michael with relief in her eyes. He smiled and ruffled her hair then carefully took her wet jacket from her shoulders. She let him do so, but she was quite tense.
Michael's mother came back and Talia bowed low to her.
“Mrs.Duplacy, you have my apologies for my childish behavior earlier this evening. I reacted crudely.” She stayed bowed down, not making eye contact.
Michael merely rose his eye brow to Talia and then looked to his mom for a reaction.
His mother chuckled at her. “Oh child, stand up. Your apology is accepted.” She smiled at her, and handed her a towel to dry off with.
Talia stood up; her face flushed with a blush of embarrassment and accepted the towel handed to her. She dried off her hair and looked at Michael shyly.
Michael smiled and took the other towel his mum had and muttered his thanks. He removed his coat too.
“So, Talia…Are you still hungry?” Michael asked with a nervous laugh.
Talia giggled at him. “Actually, now that you mention it, I am kind of hungry.” With that, they walked to the kitchen for leftovers from supper. The two ate in silence while his family; his mother, father and sister, looked on studying their guest.
Just as Talia was about to leave, Michael gave her a present. It was a movie called “Underworld”. Talia stared at the cover, fairly entranced by it. She smiled up at Michael.
“Michael…Thank you so much. It means a lot actually.” Her face was slightly red from embarrassment.
Michael smiled at her softly. “You're very welcome dear. Now, let's get you home. It's pretty late already.” He said quietly, looking to the clock that read 9:30 pm.
Talia smiled and nodded to him. “You're right. I should be heading home. Thanks for having me Ms. Duplacy.” Michael's mother smiled warmly at her.
“It was our pleasure deary. You should run along home now.”
Talia smiled at them both, and then gracefully made her way out the door.
The next day Talia came to school with a downcast look upon her face. She even walked right past Michael in the morning.
When lunch time arrived, Michael sat by Talia.
“Talia what's wrong? You've been avoiding me all morning. Usually you tackle me when ever you see me.”
Talia looked down, her face hidden behind black locks of her hair. “I watched Underworld last night.” Her voice was faint. “But mom found me watching it. She not only grounded me, she threw my movie away.”
He looked at her in shock. “Why? Why would your mom do something like that?”
Talia stared at him, and a blank expression met his eyes.
“The movie,” Talia began softly, “spoke of lycans in a good light. Something of the like is forbidden in my household.”
Michael placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. He just had to find a way to convince her parents that his family wasn't the villains her family assumed them to be. Moments later, he came up with something.
He looked over to her excitedly. “Talia, I think I have a plan to convince your parents my family isn't who they think we are!”
Talia looked at him, eyes fully alert. “You do?”
Michael nodded smiling widely. “I do! All we have to do is let them see me saving you from a lycan.”
Talia looked at him doubtfully. “I don't think that will work Michael, but it is worth a try.” She smiled at him.
The whole lunch time they planned out all the important details to their plan, and by the end of lunch, they were done organizing.
At the end of school, Michael went to Talia's house. They were going to ask if her parents wanted to come on a nature walk with them. Both prayed they would.
Luckily her parents agreed, and came with them to a near by park. The park was quite gloomy but that added to the beauty of the area.
The three were walking when Talia saw a glowing stone up ahead, and ran towards it. She looked briefly to her left and made sure Michael's brother, Alexander saw her. He was gazing on from in the bushes, waiting in his lycan form, ready to go.
Talia then bent down to pick up the stone, when Alexander leaped from hiding spot towards Talia. His dark brown fur glowed blue under the holes in the tree tops.
Talia hissed and seemingly glided back to Michael's side, genuine fear in her eyes. She never really met Alexander before now. Talia clung to Michael's arm.
Alexander snarled and slowly made his way towards Talia, his eyes glowing bright blue. His gaze never wavered away from Talia.
Michael glared at Alexander and stood protectively in front of Talia. Slowly, his face transformed from his human features, to his lycan form. Michael's fur was a jet black, just as his hair in his human form, and his eyes were just as blue. He bowed low, snarling deeply at his brother, taking slow steps towards him.
As Michael glared him down, Alexander ran off. With that, Michael turned around to Talia parents and tried to smile slightly.
Talia's parent's needless to say looked impressed. Also, they didn't know what Michael's brother looked like, so their lack of intelligence there was greatly used. And it worked.
After that, Talia's parents learned not all the lycans were as vicious as they thought. The two families became close as time went on and both learned things they didn't know of the other species.
Also, for Talia's up coming birthday, her parents bought her a new “Underworld” DVD, along with the second movie, “Underworld 2: Evolution”. On her birthday, she watched both with her new boyfriend who `coincidently' was Michael.
