“It's all down to you,” the voice said, “And you'd better find your door soon, because you're running out of time.”
“Don't rush me,” Sapphire muttered, turning the key in the lock on a door. It opened. “Okay, did you do that on purpose?” she asked.
There was no answer. Sapphire shrugged and walked through the door. She was on a pirate ship. “What…?” she frowned. She looked around, and saw Katy. “Katy!” she said. There was no response. “What's going on?”
“She can't hear you,” The Voice said. “You're dead, remember? Your test is to somehow help all of your friends get though their tests. It won't be easy, because you can only be in one of their tests at a time. As soon as you believe you've helped one enough, you'll have to move on to the next test. Just tell me when you want to move on and you will.” The voice paused. “You might want to figure something out now. Katy is up against that wall, and those pirates are bound to see her sooner or later.”
Sapphire looked over at the two pirates who were standing across from Katy. There was a third pirate that Katy seemed to be eyeing, who was closer to her. Sapphire saw that the two pirates were getting close to looking Katy's way. She floated over to a pile of rope on the side of the ship. She picked up the rope, which was a tremendous feat surely, because she was a ghost and therefore had difficulty picking up corporeal objects. Then she threw the rope as hard as she could toward the pirates. They turned toward her, obviously confused. This left Katy enough time to kill the pirate closest to her and retreat back into the shadows before the other pirates noticed what had happened. Sapphire smirked, knowing that she had helped Katy succeed. “Okay, Voice thing. I'm done here.”
“Very well.” Sapphire was suddenly at a train station. She saw David, dressed as a hobo, surrounded by a crowd of people. He was holding a worm in his hand.
“Ten dollars!”
“Five dollars!”
“Seven dollars and…fifteen cents!”
“Okay, here I go…” David put the worm in his mouth, chewing it up and swallowing it. Then he stuck out his tongue to prove he had eaten it.
“Ew!” the crowd chorused, but they all dropped money in his hat, which was placed on the ground.
“Run across the train tracks and back when the train is coming!” someone yelled.
David frowned. “I could die doing that!” Sapphire watched as David counted the money he had just received.
“I'll pay you 1,193.16 if you do it!”
David paused. “Alright. How many seconds before the train comes do I have in order to do it?”
“Five. You should be able to get across the tracks and back in five seconds.”
The train's whistle blew as the man yelled, “Go!” David ran across the tracks. Sapphire had a bad feeling about what was going to happen. She ran forward as the train sped toward David. She pushed him out of the way of the train just as it passed him, charging right through her.
“Freaky,” Sapphire said, shuddering. “I just got hit by a train.” She looked up at the sky. “Okay, Voice. I'm done here.”
Sapphire was now in what appeared to be a campsite. She saw a man holding a strange mechanical device, aiming at a tree. It started beeping. Sapphire floating over to the tree and inspected it. On one of the branches she saw a very tiny Jaci. She gasped, realizing what the machine was. Jaci flew away, but the machine kept beeping. “Hmm…maybe this isn't a fairy detector. Maybe it's a supernatural presence detector or something like that?” She decided to test it, floating toward the device. The beeping got louder and the man holding it appeared to be excited, gesturing for his friends to follow him. Sapphire giggled. Then she floated away into the forest, allowing Jaci some freedom to do whatever it was she needed to do, and led the campers away.
When she decided that they were at a safe distance, she said, “Okay, I'm done here.” Now Sapphire was in a high school. “Great,” she said. “I'm a dead schoolgirl in a high school.” She saw April holding a knife, with two dead bodies surrounding her. “Uh…okay…” She frowned. “This is weird.”
“How many of you people do I have to kill?” April screamed.
“Um, Voice? Can I get some help here?”
The Voice sighed. A monkey playing cymbals, sitting on a box, appeared in front of her. “Take that monkey and replace it with one of the students' hearts. I don't care which one. April has to find it.”
“How…?”
“Look, just kind of…run through the person. Grab their heart and replace it with the music box. It's simple. You'll get it.”
Sapphire frowned. “Okay…” She picked up the monkey and floated down the hallway, looking a victim. She found the head cheerleader. “Bingo. Stupid cheerleader…” She floated through the cheerleader and found herself inside of her, staring at her internal organs. “Gross.” She found the heart and replaced it with the music box. Then she floated the rest of the way through her, just as April came running toward her. “Done, Voice.”
“Okay, good luck with this next one.”
Sapphire heard barking. She saw a tiny fox running through a field. “Crap,” she said. “Dogs.” She was terrified of dogs. She followed the fox, which she assumed was Nancy, into a forest. She looked around, wondering what it was that Nancy had to do there. She watched as Nancy pulled a rope down from a tree and turned around to head back through the field. Nancy and Sapphire both froze when the dogs caught up to them.
Sapphire floated toward the dogs, knowing that she shouldn't be afraid, because she was a ghost and nothing could hurt her. After all, she had already gotten hit by a train. To her amazement, the dogs backed away as she approached. She chased after them, allowing Nancy ample time to escape.
“I'm done here,” Sapphire said.
“You're done, then,” The Voice said. “I'm a bit surprised. Open the box in front of you and then walk through the door to your left.” A box and a door appeared. Sapphire opened the box and pulled out a mask.
“A mask?” she asked.
“Yes, I know, everyone knows who I am now. Just go through the door.” Sapphire did as she told him. “Put the mask on the desk and walk through the door in front of you. Take a seat on the sofa. I'll explain everything in due time.”
Sapphire walked through the door and saw her friends all sitting there.
“How long have you been here?” she asked Nancy, amazed that Nancy had finished her test before Sapphire had.
“About ten seconds,” Nancy said. Enough time to screw Davey.
The others coughed. It dawned on Nancy what she had said. “Oh, shut up, you perverts. That's not what I meant!”
They laughed nervously, knowing that they had most likely beaten The Voice's tests. Their laughter ended when the door opened and another figure walked into the room.
