The sky was grey, as usual. Every day I took note of everything I could –as subtly as I could. Whether it was noticing that 491-C’s limp was worse, or figuring out when someone forgot to put pepper in the mashed potatoes at lunch. Sometimes I thought if I didn’t do this I would lose myself, like most everybody else.
I was walking inside a large crowd; we were all heading towards the same place. The institution. Once a week we all had a check up, to make sure everything was “in order”. In other words, to make sure we were all still completely under control. My steps faltered thinking about the consequences of my resistance.
“Excuse me, Brother.” I muttered as I accidentally stepped too close to someone. There were many of us, but as the Laws state we must keep a safe distance between us. I felt the urge to roll my eyes, but held back. As the crowd continued to move forward I took notice of something different from the corner of my eye.
Red caution tape plastered the front of a building, yet there were no Guards. Odd. The urge to look at it straight on was too strong, and I gave in. The tape was just flapping in the wind, as if the Guards had only gotten halfway through putting it up. The building looked as if there had been a small explosion inside, and again I wondered where the Guards were. Normally I couldn’t take 10 steps without seeing one, but today was different. Suddenly it clicked. Today was just the beginning. I’d only ever heard whispers and snippets about it. In the dark of night, when the shadows came alive, I would hear of “revolution” and “change”. It was part of what kept me sane. It was finally happening.
I looked up at the sky for the first time in ages, breathing in as if it was my first breath, and noticed the sun peeking out from between the clouds.
