When Destiny Calls
When destiny calls, you are forced to answer, whether you like it or not. Three young boys are about to learn this lesson the hard way.
“Boring!!” Ronin yelled as he and his friends Jiro and Shin walked to their bus. “That’s our lives in a nutshell! Boring!”
“No, that’s your life in a nutshell.” Jiro said. “My life is not boring.” Ronin stared at him.
“Name one thing out of the ordinary you’ve done today.” He said. Jiro opened his mouth to reply but closed it and mumbled something under his breath when he realized he had nothing to say.
“Burned.” Shin said.
“See? Every single day is the same.” Ronin said and sighed. “The world is so boring these days.”
“Well, since it’s the only world we’ve got, I suggest you stop complaining.” Shin said. Ronin sighed.
“Fine…” He said. The three of them made it to their bus and got on. Ronin took his seat. ‘The only world I’ve got huh?’ He thought. ‘Well that sucks…’
“Where are you?” A voice called. Ronin looked around.
“What the heck?” He said. “What was that?”
“We need you…please…help us…” It said again. Ronin leaned over the aisle to Shin’s seat.
“You hear something?” He asked.
“Just the sound of you losing your sanity.” Shin said.
“Not funny.” Ronin said and moved back into his seat. ‘That was weird…like someone was calling me…’ He thought.
That night as Jiro got ready for bed, he had a similar experience.
“They are coming for us…” The same voice said. Jiro’s eyes widened.
“Who said that!?” He said, putting his hands up as if he were going to fight the voice.
“His warriors…they will wipe us all out soon…” The voice said then again faded away. Jiro slowly calmed down.
“What the hell was that?” He asked himself. “I must not be getting enough sleep…” He shrugged it off and climbed into bed.
The next morning, Shin woke up and slowly dragged himself into the bathroom to brush his teeth.
“And so another completely uneventful day begins.” He said as he grabbed the toothpaste.
“Please…we know there are powerful warriors in that world…” The voice said, making Shin squeeze all the toothpaste out of his tube in surprise. He turned around but saw no one.
“Who’s there?” He asked. “Whoever you are, what the hell are you doing in my bathroom!?”
“Fine then…if you will not come to us then we will use our own magic…” The voice said and faded away once more. Shin sighed and started to brush his teeth.
‘Maybe Ronin’s not the only one going crazy…’ He thought.
Later that day, the three friends met up in English class. “Hey guys, what’s up?” Ronin asked as he sat down.
“Well, besides the fact that I’m going nuts, nothing much.” Jiro said. Ronin raised an eyebrow at him.
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“Yesterday I heard someone talking to me, but when I looked around no one was there.” He explained.
“Same here.” Shin said. “Someone was talking to me in the bathroom this morning.”
Ronin stared at them both.
“The same thing happened to me on the bus yesterday!” He said. The three of them were dumbstruck.
“Okay…we can’t all be going crazy.” Jiro said.
“Or can we?” Ronin said with an ominous tone.
“No, we can’t.” Shin said. “Someone must be trying to contact us.” Suddenly an eraser struck Shin in the head.
“No talking!!” The teacher yelled. The three of them glared at her.
“Freakin witch.” Ronin said. “Anyway, what are we gonna do?”
“Nothing.” Jiro said. “We all just imagined people talking to us. That’s it. End of discussion.”
“We all imagined the same thing?” Ronin asked sarcastically.
“Yes, we all imagined the same thing!” Jiro replied. Suddenly the windows flew open and a fierce wind blew into the classroom. All the papers and books started flying around.
“What the hell is this!?” Shin yelled.
“Our imagination, duh.” Ronin said. Jiro glared at him and the lights suddenly exploded.
“Okay, fine! Something weird is going on!” Jiro said.
“Really? How can you tell?” Ronin asked before a textbook skimmed the top of his head.
“Enough sarcasm!” Jiro yelled. Suddenly the floor beneath the three of them started to glow a bright blue.
“Now what!?” Shin yelled. The three of them slowly started to sink into the blue light. “The floor is eating us!!”
“Somehow I knew it would end like this…” Ronin said.
“I hardly doubt that.” Jiro said. The three of them were now in the light up to their shoulders.
“Goodbye cruel world, I knew ye well.” Shin said.
“Look on the bright side, we can’t go to school if we’re dead.” Ronin said. Before Shin could reply they disappeared into the light. They suddenly reappeared high up in the sky.
“We’re alive?” Jiro asked. “We’re alive!!”
“And we’re falling.” Shin pointed out. They were plummeting towards the ground at an alarming rate.
“We’re dead!! We’re all gonna die…again!!” Jiro yelled.
“I doubt that.” Ronin said. “Something tells me we’re gonna be perfectly fine.”
“We’re basically skydiving without parachutes and you say we’ll be fine!?” Jiro yelled.
“Yup.” Ronin said. The ground was quickly getting closer.
“Well, guess I’ve live a full 15 year long life.” Jiro said.
“Not really.” Shin said. Jiro glared at him just before they hit the ground. Or so they thought. They each opened their eyes and realized that they had landed on a blanket of blue light.
“We’re alive…again!!” Jiro yelled. They then noticed that they were surrounded by people in white hooded robes. “We’re gonna-” He was interrupted when Ronin smacked him.
“Stop being so damn dramatic!” He yelled.
“Ah, it seems my spell has worked.” Said an old man who stepped forward. He was also wearing a white robe but had an especially large hood. His only visible facial feature was his long white beard that almost reached his waist. “I feared it would take many more tries to bring you to our world.” Ronin raised his hand.
“Um…excuse me but…where are we?” He asked. “And who are you?” The old man chuckled softly.
“Of course, I have not introduced myself.” He said and pulled off his hood, revealing a smiling wrinkled face. “I am Akira the wise, but please, just call me Akira. I am a sorcerer, and the one who called you to this world.”
“You keep saying “this world”.” Shin interrupted. “Are you saying…we’re not on Earth?” Akira nodded.
“That is correct.” He said. “This is the world of Shima. I brought you here using a teleportation spell.” He again chuckled softly. “I must admit, I feared it would not work. I am glad it-”
“Hold up a second!” Jiro interrupted. “You’re telling us that not only are we in some world called “Shima”, but you transported us here using some kind of weird magic spell?” Akira nodded.
“Yes, that is correct.” He said.
“Right…well, I’m outta here.” Jiro said. “Let’s go guys, I’m sure were just in a field on the outskirts of the city.”
“I really doubt that.” Ronin said.
“Why?” Jiro asked. “You don’t really believe this old fart’s story do you?”
“Turn around.” Shin said.
“Wh-” Jiro stopped when he turned and saw the enormous stone wall behind them. It was at least 30 feet high and stretched as far as the eye could see in both directions.
“Akira the wise speaks the truth.” Said one of the other hooded ones. “You are at the entrance to our kingdom, the Mighty Wall.”
“Mighty Wall, that’s a nice original name.” Shin said.
“Please, come with me.” Akira said as he walked toward the wall and a door opened. “I promise all your doubts will disappear.” The three boys looked at each other then decided to follow him.
“What the hell is going on?” Ronin whispered.
“You think I know?” Jiro answered.
“Let’s just go along with it for now.” Shin said. Ronin and Jiro nodded and kept walking. The wall was more of a tunnel as they walked through. They finally made it to the other side and their eyes widened.
“Whoa…” Ronin said. It was as if they had stepped into the past. Large cabins lined the blue and grey stone streets while smaller shacks also stood out. People trying to sell fresh food and weapons and all sorts of other things could be heard. A man pulling a cart full of strange fruit slowly passed them. Akira stepped in front of them and smiled.
“Welcome, to the kingdom of Senso.” He said. The boys stood there dumbfounded.
“Toto…I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.” Ronin said.
“So, shall we head to the palace?” Akira asked.
“Palace?” They said in unison. Akira turned forward and pointed into the distance. The boys squinted and their jaws dropped when they saw the enormous castle that seemed to touch the sky itself.
“Okay…number one, that palace is ridiculously huge. Like than plain old unnecessary kind of huge.” Jiro said. “And number two, you expect us to walk that far?” Akira again chuckled.
“Of course not.” He said. “Have you already forgotten that I am a sorcerer?” He started to glow with blue light and the boys’ eyes widened when they also started to glow.
“What’s going-” Jiro was cut off when the four of them disappeared. Seconds later they reappeared in front of the palace. “on? Stop doing that!”
“Here we are.” Akira said. “As you can see, my magic has more…practical uses.”
“That’s awesome!” Ronin said. “You can poof yourself anywhere you want to be!” Akira smiled.
“Well, there are a few restrictions, but yes, that is pretty much true.” He said. “Though I’m sure it is nothing more impressive than the wonders of your world.”
“Wonders?” Shin asked.
“Yes, you must tell me everything about the warriors and sorcerers of your world later.” He said.
“Warriors? Sorcerers?” Jiro asked.
“But first you must speak with the king.” Akira continued. “His eminence has instructed me to bring you to him for an audience immediately upon your arrival.” The two guards standing watch at the gate opened the huge doors. “Come now, you would be wise not to keep a king waiting.” He walked inside and the boys followed.
‘Something tells me this wont end well.’ Ronin thought. After walking inside Akira again transported them to the doors of the audience chamber.
‘Couldn’t he have just transported us here from the beginning?’ Shin thought.
“Please enter.” Akira said.
“…okay…” They said hesitantly. They pushed open the large doors and stepped inside the enormous gold and red room.
“Ah, you’re here. Welcome.” The king said. He was a very large man who appeared to be in his thirties. He sat atop an equally large throne that was encrusted with many gleaming jewels. “I am king Masa, it is an honor to meet you.”
“The honor is ours your eminence.” Ronin said, shifted into polite mode.
“I see you have more respect than I expected.” Masa said. “I expected the warriors of your world to be more audacious, but it seems you’ve proven me wrong.”
“Please excuse my interruption your eminence, but did you just call us warriors?” Shin asked.
“Yes, I did.” Masa said. “There is no need to try to hide it. I know you are great warriors from your world. Akira the wise used one of his most powerful spells to summon warriors from a distant world. His skills have never failed us yet, he is a most powerful sorcerer. And even though you are much younger than I expected, no doubt your skills are equally if not more astounding.” The boys were silent for a moment.
“Uh…excuse me…mr.king sir…but you’re wrong.” Jiro said. “We’re not warriors.”
“Oh please, don’t be so modest.” Masa said.
“No…really, we’re not warriors.” Ronin persisted. “We’re just normal high school boys.” The king was silent. He stared at them with wide eyes.
“S-surely you joke.” He said. “You truly aren’t great warriors?” The three of them shook their heads. A look of rage appeared on the king’s face. “Akira!!” Almost instantly Akira appeared in front of the boys.
“Yes my king?” He asked.
“Akira…you have served this kingdom since before my time. Your skills have never failed me or my father.” He tightened his fist. “So tell me…why do you chose now, when the kingdom is in more peril than ever, to fail!?” Akira’s eyes widened.
“W-what do you mean my king?” He asked. Masa pointed at the boys.
“That is what I mean! “ He yelled.
“We need powerful warriors to help defend the kingdom and you summon normal young boys!?” Akira quickly looked back at them.
“You three are mere normal boys!? Why did you not tell me!?” He asked.
“Hey, you never asked.” Ronin said. Suddenly a huge explosion came from outside the palace walls.
“What was that!?” Masa yelled.
‘I’ve got a bad feeling about this…’ Ronin thought.
