Why Her?

Chapter 1:

“Ok, I get the picture! I'll do it! I just don't see how this is going to help you. *pause* Fine, where am I supposed to go again? Ok, ok, don't worry, I'll be there.”

He hung up the phone and sank into a nearby chair. “Sheesh, it's like the guy thinks I've never done this before.” He looked on the clock on the wall and sighed,” Well, I guess I'd better get going. She'll be at the bar in an hour. Ugh, why do I do this?” He shook his head and stood up, grabbing his coat before he left.

There she is, Toshi thought as a girl walked in. He'd been sitting here, in the back of a bar, for almost 3 hours waiting for her. He didn't even know why they wanted her. He'd just been told that she was going to be at this bar and that he was to capture her without causing a scene. She looked to be about 19. She was wearing an elegant kimono, but he could tell that she wasn't comfortable in it; her blue black hair was loosely held up by two chopsticks. She was carrying what appeared to be an issue of PlayStation magazine and a small purse. “Well,” he mumbled, “might as well get this over with.”

She sat down at the bar and ordered a suicide. He smirked and watched as the bartender opened three different sodas and poured them into a glass for her. The girl thanked him and started to flip through her magazine from the back to the front. He slowly got up from his seat and made his way over to sit next to her. “Hi, I'm Toshi Black,” he said, I couldn't help but notice your kimono.”

“What about it?” She said, not even looking up from her magazine.

Hook…
“Well,” he said, trying to think about how to word it, “it is very beautiful and it flatters you perfectly. But I couldn't help but notice that that you don't seem comfortable in it. Do you mind if I ask why?”

“You just can't help but notice a lot of things can you?” She looked up at him, taking in his medium length dark hair that had been pulled into a low ponytail and his slim, but toned, figure and decided that he could prove interesting to talk to. “I had to attend a masquerade tonight and even though I love the kimono, you are right, I don't like wearing it. Dresses aren't my thing.”

Line…
“Well, do you mind if I ask your name?” He had to make sure she was the right girl; it wouldn't do to accidentally capture the wrong girl and then have to explain his mistake to his boss.

“Oh, I'm sorry. I thought I had already told you. I'm Angela Bloom.”

Sinker…
“That's a nice name.”

“Thank you.”

They sat and talked for what seemed hours about this and that. He found out that she liked to play RPGs and write fiction. She had graduated high school a year ago and was working for her father while she was in college. Her dream job was to become a famous author who tested games on the side.

“It's funny,” she said, closing the now-forgotten magazine, “Did you know that you get paid more to test video games than to design them? It doesn't make any sense.”

”No it really doesn't.” He chuckled, sighing to himself in the process. He really liked this girl. It was a shame he was about to have to do this, under other circumstances they could have become great friends, maybe even more.

“Whoa!” She said, glancing down at her phone. “When did it get so late? I need to get going. I have class in the morning.”

He stood and helped her up. “Let me walk you out.” He followed her out and hailed a cab.

How nice, Angela thought as the black car pulled up and he opened the door for her. She smiled softly at him and slid into the car, her smile disappearing when she noticed there was a decided lack of things you see in a cab. When he slid in next to her she panicked and reached for the opposite door, but his deep voice stopped her.

“Don't bother, the child lock is on.”

“What's going on?” She said, cursing herself for not noticing sooner that it wasn't a cab. He nodded to the driver and soon they melted into the sea of cars screaming down the highway.

“I'm sorry,” he said, grabbing her purse and extracting her phone before rolling down the window and throwing out the small piece of technology. “You're going to have to stay with me for a while.” He handed her purse back to her, frowning when she tried to move farther away from him. Tears began welling in her eyes and he sighed. “Don't cry,” he said, handing her his handkerchief. “As long as you don't try to escape, I have no intention of hurting you.”

“Why are you doing this?” Angela sniffled, realizing that she'd just been kidnapped.

“Again, I'm sorry. I do not know all the details. I was given orders to keep you with me until further notice.” When they finally stopped in front of a large apartment building, he took her hand. “Now, Drake is going to let us out now and you're going to walk up to my apartment with me. If you scream or try to run, I'll have to cut you.” He paused and pulled out his knife and showed it to her. “And I really don't want to do that.” She nodded, and he nodded to Drake who opened the door. He pulled her out of the car and wrapped his arm around her slim waist.

“You're free to go anywhere in this apartment,” he said when they reached his penthouse. He deadbolted the door and went into the kitchen, rummaging around for a snack. “Are you hungry?” she shook her head and he shrugged, “Anyways, don't waste your time trying to find a way to escape. Anything that would be of use to you has been removed or locked. And please, do us both a favor and don't try anything stupid. I would really hate to have to hurt you.” He looked over at her and sighed. She hadn't moved from where he'd left her, her body shaking slightly with fear.

“You might as well relax. You are going to be here for a very long time and staying tense like that will only make it harder on you.” He walked over to a set of mahogany doors and opened them to reveal a large, spacious room. “This is your room. The closet is full of clothes for you to wear and the door next to the closet leads to your bathroom. Oh! Before I forget, I have a wolf and husky mixed dog. His name is Youki and he is very sweet. Well, I think that is about it. If you need anything, my room is at the end of the hall.”

Once he was gone, Angela ran over to the bed, buried her face in the pillow and wept. She couldn't believe this was happening. Eventually she cried herself to sleep, escaping to the world of dreams, but even they were not comforting.

“What am I supposed to do? She can't expect me to just keep her here indefinitely without any reason whatsoever!” Toshi whispered into the phone. He'd heard it ringing as he left her room and had quickly punched in the code to answer it. “What did Kam say?”

“She just said that until further notice the girl is to stay with you. And that you are to make her as comfortable a possible.”

“Did she say anything else like, oh, I dunno, why we are doing this in the first place?”

“No,” Drake replied and Toshi listened as he spoke to someone in another language, French from the sound of it. “I have to go. I will call you as soon I hear more.”

Toshi hung up the phone and sighed. “It's going to be a long night. He walked over to the couch and mindlessly began changing the channels in search of something to watch. Youki, who Toshi realized must have been in the greenhouse, jumped up to sit beside him, laying his head on his lap. Toshi sighed and unconsciously reached down to pet the large dog.

“What should I do?” He said, looking once again to the girl's room. He could hear her sobs, and it bothered him. But until he knew what the situation was there was nothing he could do about it. Her sobs eventually died down and he got up and walked to the door. She must have gone to sleep. He listened for a moment to make sure that she was asleep and then opened the door. Why do they make me do this? He pulled the covers over her and stood there watching her sleep for a moment. What could they possibly want from you? When he couldn't think of anything, he turned and left, turning off the light as he went.

“Angela?” Toshi said, knocking lightly on the door. “I have to go out and I thought I would pick us up something to eat on the way back. Do you want anything?”

“No.

Toshi sighed. It had been a week since she'd gotten here. He'd finally convinced her to come out to eat, but she wouldn't leave her room for anything else. He couldn't say that he blamed her though. He sighed and turned to leave, pausing when he was stuck with an idea. “Angela, please come here,” he said, waiting until she'd opened the door and walked cautiously out to continue. “I need you to go let Youki out onto the roof. He's been inside all day and so he needs to go out. The door to the roof is right over there.” With that, he turned and left the penthouse, the lock clicking behind him as he went.

“Wow.” Angela murmured as she walked onto the roof with Youki yipping happily as he ran through the vast foliage. The entire rooftop had been turned into a greenhouse. There were flowers everywhere. It looked like she had stepped into a small glade. There was even a pond, complete with fish of various types and two birdbaths. She sighed and went to sit on a bench near the pond overlooking the city, smiling as Youki ran around to his heart's content.

“Pretty isn't it?”

Angela jumped at the sound of his voice. She'd forgotten where she was for a moment, or well she thought it was a moment. She didn't actually know how long she'd been outside. “It's beautiful. She sighed, running her fingers through the soft fur at the base of Youki's ears. “Did you do all this?”

“I did. In fact, the reason I had to go out involved this garden. But first things first, I brought us some food. Do you like Sonic?” He waited for her to nod before coming to sit on the ground in front of her. Youki, smelling the food, got up and went to sit next to him, but paused as if unsure which person to sit with. “I got you a burger and fries. I also got you a coke and an Oreo blast.” He handed her the food and then reached into the bag beside him and pulled up a smaller bag that had a large blue and green angelfish. “Do you like him?”

“He's beautiful.” She watched as he released a fish into a larger pond she hadn't noticed before. “What's the difference between the ponds?”

“The larger one is saltwater and the smaller is freshwater. That way I can have a wider variety of fish. I want to put in a waterfall that will connect the two ponds, but I haven't figured out a way to do it that won't mess with the salinity.

“Oh, that's nice.” She shifted slightly, as if unsure where to put her legs. “Um,” she said softly, looking down at her hands, “Can I ask you a question?”

“You just did but sure.”

“Why am I here?”

He was silent for a moment and for a moment she thought he wouldn't answer. “To tell the truth, I don't know why you are here. I was given orders to keep you here until further notice and to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible. I will allow you as much freedom as I can, but you also have to remember that no matter what, I have to follow orders.”

Angela nodded and began picking at her food, “Thank you, by the way, for letting me come outside.”

“You're welcome.” Toshi said, smiling up at her between bites of fries. “I figured you were probably getting cabin fever.” He smiled once again and watched Youki curl up at her feet. “He really seems to like you. I've never seen him warm up to someone this quickly. You must be really special.” She smiled slightly, although it didn't reach her eyes.

They sat outside for a while, each lost in their own thoughts, until Youki started clawing at the door. “I really need to get that dog door fixed,” he said, sighing and picking up all the trash from their lunch. He stood and extended his hand toward her, but once again she shied away from him. “I understand your hesitation, but I meant it when I said I wouldn't hurt you. I don't like hurting people, especially attractive women such as yourself.” He extended his hand to her again and smiled softly when she cautiously placed her hand in his. “Do you want to watch a movie?”

“I…guess,”

“Ok, then follow me.”

“WHERE IS SHE?”

The woman sitting behind the desk flinched as a vase flew past her and shattered against the wall. “I assure you sir,” she said, raising her hands to try and calm the furious man. “We are doing everything we can to find your daughter.”

“That's not good enough!”

Another vase made contact with the wall, this one just barely missing the tall woman's head. She sighed, got up, and walked to the door. As she left the room, she listened as more furniture, larger pieces now that no one was in the room to hinder him, crashed and shattered. “Heaven help anyone who has to deal with him today.”
