“Did you hear about the big mess that the police are trying to cover up?”
“ What big mess that the cops are trying to cover up?”
Lilith stared down at the stacks of comics that she was rearranging and tried to block out the unwanted conversation.
“ Well three boys were found last night. They were dead obviously but the weird thing is that there was no trace of the weapon that killed them or the person who did it. They have absolutely no leads!”
Lilith stopped abruptly and stared straight forward. ‘ No leads?’
The police force around here was the greatest in the nation and there had never been a crime that the top detectives on the force couldn’t handle. If it was a person who did it then there was bound to be evidence; a bloody foot print, a weapon, hair follicles. Something! Not just a random bloody murder with no trace of evidence!
“ Excuse me, Mrs.?”
Lilith jumped with a start and whirled around her badge whipping around and smacking her in the face. Leading her to drop all the comics in her hands.
“ Oh my god! I’m sorry! Are you alright?”
“ Ugh, Yeah I’m fine, just startled me is all. It’s actually ‘Ms.’, not ‘Mrs.’, Can I help you?” Lilith looked up at the stranger that had spooked her and stopped in mid grab and gawked at the man. He was amazingly handsome, his dark brown hair was bushy and curled at the ends. His eyes hazel and his lips were full. He smiled at her as he bent down to help her pick up her mess and she couldn’t help but notice his wonderfully straight teeth that had a slight point to them. She shivered as she thought of what they would feel like in a heated kiss and started to lean forward when…
“ So do you get spooked every time someone asks you a question or is it just because I’m so handsome?” He laughed while she shook the image of her mouth against his out of her mind.
“ Uh, Um, What?” She asked stupidly and tried quickly to collect herself.
Standing up she reached out to take the stack from his hands but he pulled them against his chest and smiled. Shifting them to one arm he extended his hand.
“ Hi, I’m Lugh. I’m the new recruit to this hell hole. I was told to have you show me around…What’s your name? They weren’t nice enough to tell me in the office. They just said the hottest chick with black hair. So I assumed it was you…” He said, the smile finally reaching his eyes when she blushed and started to reach for his hand.
“ M-My name is Lilith. Lilith Pure. I’m the assistant manager so of course they would tell you to come talk to me.” She said with a smile as she shook his hand.
They let go of each others hands and Lilith began to walk to the counter by the register and put down the comics. As it were, Lilith was the assistant manager at Comic Central, the second largest comic book store in the state and apparently she was very good at her job even though she had only been working there for the summer. It hadn’t taken her very long to move up. Not to mention she was the only one with a college education and any book smarts in the store.
Lilith turned around to face Lugh to find that he was frighteningly close to her. She jumped yet again and almost fell back to get away from him. He laughed and handed her the comics. She glared at him and took the comics and laid them on the counter next to the previously placed stack.
“ You know you don’t need to follow so closely behind me. I like my bubble intact and to myself thank you.” She said as she moved around him to walk towards the racks.
“ Yeah but if I let you have your bubble then I wouldn’t be able to make you blush, and I think everyone benefits from your blushes.” He smiled as he trailed behind her like a happy puppy, a slight bounce in his step. She stopped and turned around to face him and point out some of the stock when she heard the door chime and she looked at the customer that had just entered. He was short, wore thick rimmed glasses, had grease stains on his shirt where his pits were and was just all around unattractive with his half bald head.
“ That is our highest paying customer and he comes here everyday. Treat him with as much respect as you can. I know I want to barf when I see him but I smile and endure it.” She whispered to him and stood up straight. Putting on the best smile she could, she walked over to him and greeted him.
“ Welcome to Comic Central! How are you today Henry?” She said. Holding down the urge to vomit as she smelled just how long it had been since he last bathed. He smiled at her, showing of his yellowed teeth and bowed.
“I’m wonderful now that I get to see your beautiful face Lilith. When are we going to finally leave this relationship of only seeing each other at your work behind us and actually go on a date?” He said, getting closer to her.
She slowly moved away and smiled politly. "I'm sorry Henry. But you are a valued customer here and a relationship would not work between us as I love my job more than anything on this earth."
“Oh, well maybe one day I will convince you to feel otherwise.” He said with a frown that wrinkled his forehead.
“So, what will it be today Henry?” She said as she stomached yet another case of nausea and took his arm to lead him away from Lugh to the new releases section of the store.
“ Well my beautiful flower, I need the newest copy of Unbalance Unbalance, I know it’s not sold in the U.S.A but I figured the best comic sales woman in the tri-county area could figure out a way to get it for me.” He said trying to lead her out the door but failed as Lilith pulled away to face him in front of a stack of new releases.
“ I can see what I can do.” She said as she smiled at his tactics. “ How about this,” She got close enough to whisper in his ear. “ I’ll look into it and as soon as I get it in I will personally call you.”
He smiled brightly and started to blush “ That would be so wonderful, I’ll be awaiting your phone call then Ms. Lilith.” Henry said as he started to leave. “ Think about what I said. You can always leave this place and live with me.” And with a quick wink he was gone out the door. Taking with him all his flies and stench.
